St. Pete Pride - Saturday, June 25 & Sunday, June 26, 2016

Events Schedule

Around 15 years ago, Tampa Pride was forced to stop, St. Pete Pride was born. Of Course, two years ago Pride returned to Tampa with an incredible turn out, but years of attention for St. Pete Pride has caused it to grown into one of the largest Pride events in Florida, and one of the top ten largest in the entire country! St. Pete Pride presents so many events we can’t cover them all here, but we will focus on the weekend’s major events.

On Friday, June 24 from 7-11pm they are featuring the SP2 Concert which is a fundraising event to assist in funding various Tampa Bay community organizations. This year's concert features the legendary Deborah Cox as the headliner, but will also feature DJ L-Mo, Karmic Tattoo and Jennifer Real. SP2 concert will feature various bands and local singers who will warm up the crowd as attendees cool down with their choice of Bud Lite and Absolut Vodka beverages. Beverage sales benefit the St Pete Pride Community Grants Program. The event takes place at 26th and Central and is FREE (Donations accepted), but they are selling $20 Pit Passes which allows you to view the concert directly in front of the Wells Fargo Stage.

On Saturday, June 25 from 5-11pm St Pete Pride is featuring the LGBT Pride Parade. The Saturday Block Party begins at 5:00 p.m., held between 22nd Street and 27th Street along Central Avenue, featuring DJs, food and beverages. The Parade will roll off at Sunset. The LGBT Pride Parade, held within the Historic Kenwood Neighborhood and Grand Central District, features more than 150 organizations and businesses and over 4,500 marchers supporting and celebrating the Tampa Bay LGBT community. The Parade draws more than 200,000 people in total, making it the large LGBT Pride Parade in Florida and largest overall in St Petersburg. The event is free and open to the public, but Bleacher seating is available in The Glamstands.

On Sunday, June 26 from 11am to 6 pm is the St Pete Pride Festival. The parade is expected to draw more than 50,000 people when it returns to Central Avenue in the Grand Central District. Organizers promise that it will be larger, livelier and bolder than ever! The St Pete Pride Street Festival will again be the largest community event of the season as festival goers come together to make history while enjoying a day of live performances and entertainment, community booths, art and fantastic food in paradise.

After last year's overwhelming demand, the Festival length has been extended by an entire city block, and the St Pete Pride Street Festival will be more diverse and shop-stopping than ever. Over 350 exhibitors will line both sides of Central Avenue for six city blocks in a rainbow celebration of food and beverage vendors, artists, small businesses, corporations, professional sports teams, community outreach groups, non-profit organizations and Pride themed merchandisers.

According to their missionstatement, the purpose of St. Pete Pride is to promote unity, visibility, self-esteem and a positive image of and among the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community of Tampa Bay and throughout the State of Florida by way of cultural and educational programs and Activities

The History of Stonewall and June Gay Pride

For the last forty years, the last weekend of June has marked an important history for the LGBT community. Hundreds of thousands of people take to the streets every year to celebrate our right to express sexual orientation and gender identity in a safe and accepting environment. The number of events, organizations, parades, and supporters of the LGBT community has grown into a solidified culture within these last four decades, one which demands respect, protection and equal treatment. It’s hard to believe that something so colorful started on a muggy night, in a dark bar, in the wee hours of July 28, 1969 with police raiders and rioting patrons.

Stonewall: The Cornerstone of the Modern Gay Rights Movement

The people of Stonewall Inn at 53 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village (New York City) were no strangers to police raids. Roughly once a month, fluorescent lights would flood the bar, warning the patrons inside of the impending procedures they were all too familiar with. Officers strutted through Stonewall, lining patrons against the walls and checking the identification of every man and woman inside. People with no identification were arrested. Men in women’s clothes were arrested. Anyone “touching inappropriately” or who looked suspicious was arrested, in a roulette of bullying and public humiliation, and often the bar’s stock of alcohol was confiscated. But despite the regular police intimidation, Stonewall Inn was one of the most successful gay bars in New York City. In fact, it was regarded as the gay bar of New York City, for one reason above all: its unprecedented two-story dance floor. People went to Stonewall because they loved to dance, and nowhere else in the city could two men dance together, making nights at the Inn worth every risk.

National LGBTQ Task Force Releases MLK Day Statement

The National LGBTQ Task Force is joining LGBTQ activists all across the nation in celebrating Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

"Dr. King’s words are always inspirational — and today they’re also an eloquent and urgent invitation to join the social justice movement. As we remember his legacy, we also lift-up the people who worked with him in the civil rights  movement — heroes like Congressman John Lewis who continue to champion civil rights and justice today. When an iconic leader like Congressman Lewis is maligned and his entire district is mischaracterized as ‘crime infested’ and ‘falling apart’, it is an attack on Dr. King's dream and on the entire movement for freedom, justice and equity. Shame on you Donald Trump, for using this MLK holiday to further divide our nation," Rea Carey, Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund.

(Photo: New Yorkers Nick and Steve wrestle on their first date)

Voyeuristic viewers tag along for the day-long courtship as these courageous men turn each other on—and sometimes [snap!] turn on each other. Ice-breaking activities include everything from wrestling matches and kink classes to body painting and tantric yoga. After the date, the couples are whisked away to a proper dinner date, where, clutching much needed drinks, the couples unwind, flirt and on occasion, fizzle.

WATCH:

The premiere episode airs on Valentine's Day 2017 on Dekkoo.

Florida's 5 Best Clothing Optional Gay Men's Resorts

Life in the tropics is all about beating the heat. And what better way cool off than to hang out poolside without clothing? Florida has dozens of clothing optional resorts, but which ones are the best? Here's the Mark's List take on the 5 best (in no particular order).

In Key West check out New Orleans House and Island House. New Orleans House is located on Duval Street, right in the middle of all of the action. You can count on a great time poolside or in Key West's biggest Gay nightclub, Bourbon Street Pub. Island House is located on a quieter side street and offers amazing rooms, many of them opening onto the pool and patio. There's also an amazing pool side cafe serving up some of the best food (and libations) on the Island. In Fort Lauderdale, we suggest you get your Gay clothing optional groove on at The Grand Resort and Spa, which offers an upscale atmosphere with amenities that include spa services, poolside cabana bars and plenty of tanning lotion to keep your booty from burning. In Central Florida you can head out into the woods and catch some all over rays at the Sawmill Camping Resort. Sawmill offers cabins and plenty of places to park RVs or pitch tents. There's also a large heated pool, a dance hall, restaurant, several themed bars and plenty of trails to go "hiking" on.
