Though Florida sports but four “official” gay beaches -12th Street Gay Beach, South Beach; Halouver Beach, North Miami; Sebastian Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Sunset Beach, St. Petersburg – our presence nowadays is felt on just about every sandy patch of the Sunshine State. With a growing gay population more interested in natural beauty and beachside charm than underwater quickies and Speedo couture, a few unlikely swathes of downy sands are making waves in the gay battle of the beach. Case in point: Siesta Key Beach.

Along the Sunshine State’s central gulf coast, Siesta Key beach showcases the finest and purest sand in the world, 99.01% pure quartz to be exact. The beach teems with a parade of sand sculpture artists, hippies, modern and traditional families basking in unadulterated palm-fringed, sun-drenched bliss. After several years of placing in the Top 10 list of “America’s Best Beach,” as rated by Dr. Stephen Leatherman aka Dr. Beach and the Travel Channel, Siesta Key Beach took home the crown in 2011 and hasn’t looked back since. Just because there’s no rainbow flags anchored into these pillows of sugarloaf sands doesn’t mean there are no gays to rock this party; quite the contrary. Unlike Fort Lauderdale or Palm Springs, Florida’s west coast GLBT community focuses much less on segregation and more on integration. Siesta Key Beach is one big ole party, and everyone’s invited.

Most days, the Siesta Key beach shenanigans simmer the late afternoon, when time stands still to witness what is arguably the most picturesque sunset in the country. On Sundays, however, sunset is just the beginning of the weekly “Drum Circle,” a sort-of flash mob of regionally epic proportions. In what’s now become a weekly tradition, the artsy, eclectic, and sometime downright weird congregate among the family folk for hours of drum-pounding music, dancing, and booty shaking.

Come nightfall, the crowd heads up to Siesta Key Village to patronize the back-to-back beach bars and restaurants. Given the island’s tourist-centric population, the village remains busy seven nights a week; but if it suddenly begins feels a bit too straight, don’t fret. Downtown Sarasota is a mere fifteen minutes away.

Siesta Key Beach houses a number of hotels, motels and rental homes, but you’ll want to spend your nights at the island’s most coveted address, Hyatt Siesta Key Beach, A Hyatt Residence Club (1-941-346-5900; siestakeybeach.hyatt.com). Nestled on a private swath of pure quartz beach, this sunrise-tinted low-rise complex houses 44 design-savvy 2-bedroom/ 2-bathroom villas. Given the addition of an oversized den, the villas comfortably fit six, perfect for a group getaway or couples retreat

Adult Film Star Rocco Steele Tackles HIV Stigma

Although research and support for the HIV/AIDS community has come a long way since the 80s and 90s, a great deal of ignorance and stigma still exists—even within the gay community. With celebrities such as Charlie Sheen and Danny Pintauro (Who’s the Boss?) recently bringing HIV/AIDS into the entertainment headlines, perhaps now is the perfect time for a new, more enlightened conversation on the subject.

Mark’s List spoke with adult film star Rocco Steele, who has experienced his fair share of ups and downs with addiction and living with HIV.  He has, however, used these personal experiences as a catalyst to promote HIV awareness and education. Florida's Best Clothing Optional Gay Men's Resorts

Life in the tropics is all about beating the heat. And what better way cool off than to hang out poolside without clothing? Florida has dozens of clothing optional resorts, but which ones are the best? Here's the Mark's List take on the 5 best (in no particular order).

In Key West check out New Orleans House and Island House. New Orleans House is located on Duval Street, right in the middle of all of the action. You can count on a great time poolside or in Key West's biggest Gay nightclub, Bourbon Street Pub. Island House is located on a quieter side street and offers amazing rooms, many of them opening onto the pool and patio. There's also an amazing pool side cafe serving up some of the best food (and libations) on the Island. In Fort Lauderdale, we suggest you get your Gay clothing optional groove on at The Grand Resort and Spa, which offers an upscale atmosphere with amenities that include spa services, poolside cabana bars and plenty of tanning lotion to keep your booty from burning. In Central Florida you can head out into the woods and catch some all over rays at the Sawmill Camping Resort. Sawmill offers cabins and plenty of places to park RVs or pitch tents. There's also a large heated pool, a dance hall, restaurant, several themed bars and plenty of trails to go "hiking" on.

Kelly Clarkson Talks Confronting Anti-LGBT Parents

During her 15-year career as your friendly pop spirit-lifter, Kelly Clarkson has prescribed a cheap alternative to therapy: anthemic pick-me-ups like “Since U Been Gone” and “People Like Us,” songs that impel a transcendental, fist-raised state. Due, in part, to her simply being so damn cool, Clarkson – who drowned the world in their own tears right along with her own as she was crowned the inaugural “Idol” winner in 2002 – tells me she feels so compelled to stick up for her LGBT besties she literally wants to go door-to-door and talk some sense into her friends’ homophobic parents.
