About Gay & Lesbian South Beach #SoBe

Miami Beach has been one of America's pre-eminent beach resorts for almost a century. The beach, commonly referred to as #SoBe or #SouthBeach has been a Gay destination since the late 1980s when iconic nightclubs like Warsaw, Paragon and Salvation ruled the scene. While these bars are gone, a bevy of new and many would say better establishments have replaced them. For the best times on the beach check out Club BoiPalaceScore and Twist.

Miami and Miami Beach are home to several of the World's largest annual LGBT events. In fact, the city is host to more world renowned Gay and Lesbian parties than any other city on earth. In early March look for the week long Winter Party Festival with it's main event on Miami Beach. Next up is Aqua Girl, a lesbian circuit event in mid-May, followed by Sizzle, an event for black men and their admirers that takes place on Memorial Day Weekend. Sizzle Her has also gained in popularity in recent years, and now provides black women a weekend all their own.  Miami Beach Bruthaz, takes place in mid July every year. The year is wrapped up with the world famous White Party Week, a benefit for Care Resource.

The Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival includes several parties and typically showcases over 50 foreign and independent films. In the past few years, Miami Beach Gay Pride has grown into a major festival including a spectacular parade and expo on the scenic Ocean Drive along with an ever increasing number of circuit style nightclub events in the beach's major clubs.

In 1979 Miami Beach's Art Deco Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Art Deco District is the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world and comprises hundreds of hotels, apartments and other structures erected between 1923 and 1943. Mediterranean, Streamline Moderne and Art Deco are all represented in the District.

South Beach (also known as SoBe, or simply The Beach), comprises the area from 1st street to about 25th street and is the most popular area of Miami Beach. Topless sunbathing is tolerated on certain designated areas of the beach. The Gay beach can be found at Ocean Drive and 12th Street. Before the TV show Miami Vice helped make the area popular, SoBe was under urban blight, with vacant buildings and a high crime rate. Today, it is considered one of the richest commercial areas in Florida, home to designer boutiques and larger stores like an H & M Flagship store, Barney's CoOp and Macy's. Lincoln Road is a internationally known spot for great outdoor dining, bicycling, rollerblading and shopping.

The New World Symphony Orchestra, one of America's leading orchestral institutions is based in Miami Beach, Florida, under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. The orchestra has a new home that was designed by the internationally renowned architect, Frank Gehry.

The Beach also includes many other cultural venues including the Lincoln,  Fillmore, Jackie Gleason and Colony theaters. There is a botanical garden, the Holocaust Memorial and several museums including the Bass Museum, Wolfsonian, and the fabulous World Erotic Art Museum. Each year, the first weekend in December thousands of art lovers from all over the world flock to Miami Beach for the annual Art Basel.

Adult Film Star Rocco Steele Tackles HIV Stigma

Although research and support for the HIV/AIDS community has come a long way since the 80s and 90s, a great deal of ignorance and stigma still exists—even within the gay community. With celebrities such as Charlie Sheen and Danny Pintauro (Who’s the Boss?) recently bringing HIV/AIDS into the entertainment headlines, perhaps now is the perfect time for a new, more enlightened conversation on the subject.

Mark’s List spoke with adult film star Rocco Steele, who has experienced his fair share of ups and downs with addiction and living with HIV.  He has, however, used these personal experiences as a catalyst to promote HIV awareness and education. Florida's Gay and Lesbian Beaches

We've given our Florida Gay Beaches Guide a makeover. Florida is surrounded by some of the best beaches in the world. You'll find our guide right here: Florida Gay and Lesbian Beach Guide

Florida's Best Clothing Optional Gay Men's Resorts

Life in the tropics is all about beating the heat. And what better way cool off than to hang out poolside without clothing? Florida has dozens of clothing optional resorts, but which ones are the best? Here's the Mark's List take on the 5 best (in no particular order).

In Key West check out New Orleans House and Island House. New Orleans House is located on Duval Street, right in the middle of all of the action. You can count on a great time poolside or in Key West's biggest Gay nightclub, Bourbon Street Pub. Island House is located on a quieter side street and offers amazing rooms, many of them opening onto the pool and patio. There's also an amazing pool side cafe serving up some of the best food (and libations) on the Island. In Fort Lauderdale, we suggest you get your Gay clothing optional groove on at The Grand Resort and Spa, which offers an upscale atmosphere with amenities that include spa services, poolside cabana bars and plenty of tanning lotion to keep your booty from burning. In Central Florida you can head out into the woods and catch some all over rays at the Sawmill Camping Resort. Sawmill offers cabins and plenty of places to park RVs or pitch tents. There's also a large heated pool, a dance hall, restaurant, several themed bars and plenty of trails to go "hiking" on.

Kelly Clarkson Talks Confronting Anti-LGBT Parents

During her 15-year career as your friendly pop spirit-lifter, Kelly Clarkson has prescribed a cheap alternative to therapy: anthemic pick-me-ups like “Since U Been Gone” and “People Like Us,” songs that impel a transcendental, fist-raised state. Due, in part, to her simply being so damn cool, Clarkson – who drowned the world in their own tears right along with her own as she was crowned the inaugural “Idol” winner in 2002 – tells me she feels so compelled to stick up for her LGBT besties she literally wants to go door-to-door and talk some sense into her friends’ homophobic parents.
