WINTER PARTY 2016 GUIDE

The countdown to Winter Party Festival® 2016 has begun. March 2 to March 7, 2016 marks the start of Miami’s most anticipated LGBT throw down – Winter Party Festival 2016. Over 10,000 international hotties (and I mean HOTTIES) will gather for an extended weekend of mayhem, hook-ups, and standing, posing, dancing, drinking and living out quintessential South Beach hedonism. Best of all, this circuit scene is a party with a cause, with ticket proceeds benefiting the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (read between the lines – tickets are tax deductible).

As per usual, several rotating local venues downtown and on the beach will transform ordinary spaces into late night party palladiums for Winter Party. The Shelborne Wyndham Grand South Beach will welcome guests as the 2016 Winter Party Festival host hotel and the Sunday Beach Party (photos) is one of the “don’t miss” events.

Below is a mini travel guide to help you prepare for the legendary Winter Party. Carpe diem and thank the weather gods for some great South Beach winter sunshine!

US House 'Snatches Discrimination From the Jaws of Equality'

Rep. Sean Maloney (D- N.Y.) was told to "get back on your side" as he tried to point out that the time to vote on his proposal had come to an end. The proposal, which would have enforced non discrimination on the part of government contractors, was defeated by House Republicans who kept the two minute voting slot open for an extra six minutes to allow extra republicans to vote down the proposal.

In a move that sent House Dems into a state of apoplexy, the leadership on the Republican side shamefully broke the rules to allow hate to win, at least for this round. Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL. district 21) told Mark's List: “A bipartisan majority voted to protect LGBT employees on the House floor today. What happened next was shameful. Speaker Ryan bent the rules and twisted arms to defeat the winning amendment. The conservative majority's leadership grossly abused its power to override the will of the House and the clear will of the American people. But no abuse of the House rules can undermine the progress we have made and will continue to make. I will continue to fight against bigotry in any form and strive for full equality for LGBT Americans.”

SAVE, South Florida’s leading organization dedicated to protecting people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, against discrimination, have been a driving force locally for nearly 25 years. For the past ten years, SAVE has recognized the people who have kept, and will continue to keep, Miami-Dade a progressive place to live. This year's Champions of Equality Reception is no exception.

This year's big event, Brunch on the Bay, will be held on Sunday, June 5 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For the first time, this awards presentation will be held during the day and aboard a yacht, the "Lady Windridge." Everyone who has tickets to the SAVE Champions of Equality Reception will need to go to Bayside Marina in downtown Miami, directly behind the Hard Rock Cafe, and find the "Lady Windridge" yacht. It will be docked for the first three hours of the event, with attendees being able to embark and disembark as they please, and then at 4 p.m. the yacht will set sail across Biscayne Bay and then back to port.

The people recognized with the SAVE Champions of Equality Award are advocates for the community in the work they do each and every day. The honorees this year are Rev. Leo Frade, State Rep. Holly Raschein, Roxanne Vargas, and Dr. Hansel Tookes III.

Here are some of the events we think you need to consider if you're looking for a change of scenery this summer.

Behind the Scenes: A Q&A With 'Ma Ma' Director Julio Medem

Just as Magda is diagnosed with breast cancer, she meets Arturo (Luis Tosar), a devoted husband and father in the midst of unspeakable loss. Their chance encounter leads both down a path of strength, grace, love, and rebirth. Recently, we had the opportunity to speak to Ma Ma's director, Julio Medem, who was in his native Spain.

The Mickee Faust Club Presents 'Queer As Faust IX'

A little vaudeville, a dash of politics, and some saucy, sexy, and even silly morsels of skits and songs comprise the line-up for this year’s Mickee Faust Club’s “Queer as Faust IX Cabaret.” The show opens in Tallahassee the weekend of June 17-18, and runs a second weekend, June 23-25. All shows will be at 8 pm with a second show on the Saturdays at 10 pm.

The sketch comedy troupe, founded by partners in art and life Terry Galloway and Donna Marie Nudd, aren’t afraid to talk about the most taboo topic of sex, and to celebrate it as part of LGBTQ+ Pride Month in June. Galloway, who is the company’s artistic director and plays the head rat leader Mickee Faust, says visitors to Florida’s capital city may be amazed when they see what’s been happening in the shadows of the looming state capitol building.
