Fort Lauderdale Gay Mens Chorus in Fort Lauderdale on Mark's List

Fort Lauderdale Gay Mens Chorus in Fort Lauderdale, FL

Author:
Carrie Fowler
Curator:
Michael Newlin
Over 26 years ago, Dr. Keating had a vision of a gay chorus for the state of Florida. While a gay chorus was not an original idea, it certainly was in Florida. He founded the original Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida, which many years later changed their name to The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus out of respect for other South Florida area choruses. This chorus was the first established gay arts organization in the State of Florida and has gained respect and admiration from the community over the years with both gay and straight audiences.

Kelly's Landing, Authentic New England Style Seafood in Fort Lauderdale

You may have driven past this place on Cordova Road every day and figured it’s a regular eatery. But for those who walk through the wooden pub-like door, it’s a little bit of New England dropped down in Fort Lauderdale. Kelly's Landing - Fort Lauderdale specializes in fresh New England style and local seafood as well as a variety of popular dishes and desserts that are prepared fresh daily. The thing about Kelly’s is there is so much to try on the menu. It will take several visits to do the menu justice.

They do lobster New England style—just a Bug (slang for lobster) on a plate with some melted butter—and you must wear your bib. If you’re the type who enjoys hunting through the little beastie for all the hidden meat you won’t be disappointed. At lunch, their Lobster Roll has acquired a legion of followers and can only be described as famous - and for good reason. If you're tempted to try Kelly’s, don’t forget to practice some of the ‘Bastonian’ slang you’ll find on the menu: Chowdah, Lobstah or Gahden Burgah.

Be sure to check out these great specials. King Crab served with salad or potato every Wednesday special: $20. (Regularly $30). Florida Lobster Tails  are the Monday special. Twin broiled Florida lobster tails and one side for $20.

John James Audubon's House & Tropical Gardens

The Audubon House & Tropical Gardens in Key West offer a relaxing and educational look into the works of John James Audubon, world renown naturalist, with 28 first edition Audubon works in the home. The home was slated for demolition in 1958 and saved by the Mitchell Wolfson Family Foundation. This was the first restoration project in Key West, and is still considered one of the crowning achievements of the island's restoration movement.

The gardens offer a lush one-acre view of tropical foliage and are considered to be the finest tropical gardens in the Florida Keys. Audubon visited the Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas in 1832 and left Key West having sighted and drawn 22 new birds for his "Birds of America" folio. Audubon's painting of the white-crowned pigeon features the Geiger tree, still standing in the front yard of the house.

Going Out? Do Quick Isometric Exercises And Get Pumped

Don’t let crowded gyms and crazy schedules drive you batty this weekend. You can still do a quick pump and be primed for your night out. It only takes a few short minutes. Isometrics are a sure fire way to get those muscles pumped in as little time as it takes you to slither into or out of your Speedo!

Isometric exercise is defined as muscles working against a static resistance (a wall, a tree, or even another muscle group), expending energy but not moving. Muscle strength and power increase as muscles contract. The great thing about isometrics is that it’s resistance training without weights. All you need is that great body of yours because opposing muscle groups do the work. Perform each exercise slowly and intently. Build tension gradually and do only 3 reps of each exercise at a time.

You can read up on the full routine on Mark's List here: Going Out? Do Quick Isometric Exercises And Get Pumped

Dexter's Orlando Great Brunch And... Hangover Relief

We eat at Dexter's on just about every trip to Orlando. Why? Well for starters it seems like everyone else does. But more importantly it's a great place for Sunday brunch. They line up the glasses with Bloody Mary's and Mimosas and pass out the hangover relief like no other restaurant we've ever seen.

The clientele is totally mixed: gay, straight, completely unaffected and very good looking. The eggs Benedict are divine, but on our last trip we tried the New Orleans Egg Stack. Imagine this, crispy flour tortillas stacked with Andouille sausage, cumin scrambled eggs, red peppers, grilled onions, Colby cheese, salsa, and sour cream. Yeah! A killer breakfast after a night of nightclubbing. Lots more, including location info, after the Jump: Sunday Brunch at Dexter's Orlando

HIV+? Want Children? FIRST IVF Can Help

Did you know that it is safe to use sperm from HIV+ males for IVF and insemination? Methods for processing semen and testing for seminal HIV have improved in the past decade and it is now considered safe and ethically responsible to support the reproductive rights of all persons, including those infected with HIV. Techniques for processing semen include using gradient centrifugation and a "swim-up" method to remove HIV from spermatozoa. The semen is also processed to remove other viruses. As an additional safeguard, new medications that treat HIV patients decrease the viral load to an undetectable level most of the time, preventing transmission. Strong Arm Tactics

Building Tremendous Triceps

Triceps make up two-thirds of your upper arm, therefore it is logical that the bigger and more defined these babies are, the more massive your arms will look. The triceps are responsible for the movement of extension of the elbow and produce motion of the forearm. Because of their larger size you need to work tri’s a little longer and harder than biceps. Hit triceps twice a week using 3-4 exercises of 3-4 sets of 8-12 repetitions. You can check out the full routine on Mark's List here: Strong Arm Tactics, Building Tremendous Triceps

Stonewall National Museum & Archives Presents Queer Kids: Coming Out in America

Stonewall National Museum & Archives presents an exhibit titled Queer Kids: Coming Out in America. The US premiere of this stunning documentary photography exhibit opens with a reception with photographer Michael Sharkey at Stonewall National Museum in Wilton Manors on Thursday, October 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The exhibition will be on view October 30, 2014 – January 4, 2015.

For the past 8 years M. Sharkey has been documenting queer youth across the US and in Europe. Sharkey’s photographs are intimate testaments to his subjects’ powerful self-awareness; at once empathetic and opulent, they are the visual counterpart to the voice these young people have struggled—and lately succeeded—to find. Rooted in the long tradition of portraiture, Sharkey’s images grant his subjects a full measure of the dignity with which they deserve to be seen. “I think I’ll always be drawn to this amazingly brave group. Their strength is a continual source of inspiration for me” says Sharkey. “It is their defiance that I want to capture in the portraits. What I hope people might also see is the delight that is the domain of a new generation: the sheer joy of being able to stand up and be seen without shame.”

M. Sharkey began Queer Kids at a moment when teenage sexual and gender identity had just begun to gain national attention in the US. Having come of age in the early Nineties, Sharkey belongs to a generation that was often hostile to the open expression and discussion of homosexual identity. The project is a celebration of the recent developments within the Gay Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community that allow today’s youth the opportunity and support to find their own voice and speak openly about their
