We're working on finding the best Cuban Sandwich in
Florida and we've been eating at Spanish restaurants for nearly a
month, and then
New Times names Sury's Cafe the best Cuban Sandwich
in Broward and Palm Beach. We've been driving by this place for
years and it was already on our list of places to check out. New
Times made it a priority.
So how was the Cuban? One of the best ever, we
definitely think it fits into our
Book of Tens and we'll let you know where Sury's Cafe placed
in a few weeks.
Sury's Cafe is a very cool place to eat. It's basic
order and go, no more than a walk up window, a counter and four
stools. The walk up window is about three feet off Andrews Avenue,
less than a block south of Sunrise Boulevard. When you park in the
back (about 6 spaces), you enter into world unlike any other in Fort
Lauderdale. There are quirky Cuban folk art paintings with religious
figures and scenes of countryside adorning the parking lot fence and
walls.
The menu is minimalist, offering only steak and
chicken sandwiches, empanadas, Cubans, fries, black beans and rice,
Cuban coffee and traditional egg and toast breakfasts. The
restaurant opens at 7:30 AM and closes at 4 PM.
We went for the Cuban sandwich and as we mentioned
it was fantastic, definitely one of the best we've ever had, but we
loved the empanadas. The empanadas were clearly homemade, much
larger than we're used to and perfectly seasoned and prepared. For
those of you that need something a little more North American, we
checked out the steak sandwich, which also exceeded our
expectations. The fries were quite tasty.
Three of us ate for under $30 and we couldn't finish
our meals. Sury's is a great Cafe and a traditional South Florida
experience, something that is increasingly hard to find. We highly
recommend Sury's.
