La Lupa Di Roma
When I was kid I ended up in Rome on a summer vacation with my family and I decided right then and there that I was going to be connoisseur of fine Italian food. Of course, being seventeen my likes were limited to spaghetti, meatballs and macaroni and cheese. Fortunately my taste has become quite a bit more tolerant of new things; if not for that I would have missed out on some of the best food of my life- and I've been around for a while! We were greeted on this sticky-hot South Beach summer night by Flavio who showed us to our sidewalk table situated a few blocks from Score, Halo and Buck15 on World Famous Lincoln Road. In no time we were supplied with a basket of bread, olive oil and seasoning for dipping and asked if we wanted sparkling or regular water. We were handed two menus, but when the waiter arrived we announced that we would just like them to bring us their favorite things from the menu. We were told it could be done in six courses and to go slow on the bread!
Our next course was freshly made Linguini with Proscuitto and Figs. Once again, I would not consider myself a fan of one of the ingredients, but I can assure you this entree changed my outlook and I now consider the fig a respectable ingredient. At first I couldn't find them in the pasta; I was tasting the proscuitto and what I thought were mushrooms. When I slowed down, I discovered the sweet taste of the fig and I assure you that whenever this is on the menu (figs are seasonal) this will be on the table. The Linguini with Proscuitto and Figs is truly one of the most surprisingly delightful and innovative things I have ever eaten. We have raved about this for days! Next up was Cheese Ravioli with Cured Beef and Asparagus. Once again, the dish was delicious. After the linguine with prosciutto and figs, everything had to be compared to that, but this was a dish that I am more accustomed to and I can assure you, the chef at La Lupa Di Roma put this together in an extraordinary way. Bottom line, if you're afraid to veer too far off of the long-established Italian dinner path and you're a ravioli fan, this is as good as it gets. Clams and Cherry Tomatoes with Spaghetti were served next. Once again, absolutely divine. I burnt myself out on seafood a long time ago, so once again, this isn't something I would have ordered. The dish had a nice flavor and the chef didn't go overboard on the garlic, something that we have found in other Italian restaurants is apparently very easy to do. Our next course was a little more traditional, Lasagne with Ground Chicken, Pink Sauce and Fresh Mozzarella. I have become a big fan of ground chicken, so this was a nice surprise. The thing about ground chicken is that the flavor doesn't overpower the other ingredients the way that ground beef does. What we had in this dish was a lasagna that was more about the pink sauce and pasta instead of a dish that was about the pink sauce and red meat.
After all of this we have some bad news for you. We've had to rewrite our review of The Osteria del Teatro, which we used to consider the best Italian Restaurant on the beach. While it's easy to compare the two on food and service, they are very different atmospheres and for most occasions the laid back charm of dining at a table on Lincoln Road is more appealing. So pop the question at the Osteria and eat for the rest of your life at La Lupa di Roma.
