Some friends
recommended Joey Brooklyn's and on a recent trip into the bay
area we had a chance to check it out. While doing some research
online we also discovered that not only do our friends think the
pizza is "fierce", so do the readers of The
St. Petersburg times food blog
as well as the readers of
Creative Loafing.
In fact, creative loafing has named it the number one pizza in
St. Petersburg two years in a row.
So how did Joey's
stack up against our favorite pizza's? Definitely in Florida's
top ten. Before ordering we were informed that the ovens were
stacked full and that it would be about twenty minutes before
our pies would enter the oven. The manager, thinking we were
annoyed, offered us free drinks while we waited. In reality, we
were thrilled that they were backed up, assuming that was a sign
that the food would be great; and it was.
We ordered two
pies with toppings spilt on each. The pepperoni, sausage, green
peppers and onions was superb. Did you know that when the grease
puddles, it's because they're using fresh sausage? Another good
sign. We also loved the half veggie pizza that we ordered with
fresh basil, fresh garlic, spinach, and roma tomatoes. Another
half had roma tomatoes and pineapple and the final half onions,
olives, anchovies (aka little dead hairy fish) and tomatoes. We
got everything as we ordered it and the pizza was finished a few
minutes before they said it would be. The service was
outstanding.
The menu also
includes desserts like cheesecake (New York Style of course) and
salads with an Italian flare as well as pasta like ziti and
spaghetti. There menu offers numerous salads in various sizes.
In other words, something for everyone!
This is not a
big pizza joint, so don't go in big group expecting a dining
room. This is in and out pizza, two tables and a long counter in
the whole place kind of dining. Paper plates abound and the
decor is well, nonexistent. But it's the pizza you're there for
and maybe the three AM weekend hours.
