Frituras de Vegetales Cabana El Rey

We dined at Cabana El Rey on a rainy June afternoon on Delray Beach's shopping and entertainment extravaganza, Atlantic Avenue. The waitress was surprised when we chose to sit outside under a small awning in what turned out to be quite a downpour. I assure you, it was the best way to relax and make the most of this lazy day.

We weren't really all that hungry, but we definitely weren't into the idea of braving the rain, so we had a nice long lunch!

For starters we had Frituras de Vegetales, which are broccoli and carrot fritters served over chipotle pepper sauce. Having never had anything served quite like this before, I have to say I was thoroughly impressed. The sauce was delicious, I was expecting it to be much spicier than it was. We also had a great house salad that was served with a slice of toasted Cuban bread. The salad dressing was at first a little too heavy on the lime for me, but after I got used to it, I really liked it a lot.

Next up were our entrees and again both exceeded our expectations. We loved the Tropicana salad made with Marinated grilled breast of chicken, pineapple, cantaloupes, oranges and mangos tossed with a guava mojo over field greens and the Cubano Sandwich made with fresh roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard and mayo served on a Cuban roll. The Cuban was perfectly prepared and hot pressed all the way into middle, a must for any Cuban sandwich. We also ordered a side of Frijoles, traditionally prepared black beans and rice. The only thing I thought was a little weird was that I asked for a side of salsa (I love to mix it into the black beans) and I was told they didn't have any. I thought salsa was the new ketchup!

About downtown Delray Beach: For those of you not in the know, located less than thirty minutes form the core of Fort Lauderdale and about 45 minutes from Miami, Atlantic Avenue is a great place to kick back and spend a lazy afternoon. Just make sure you're in Delray, there are three Atlantic Avenues that cross I-95 in South Florida!

While walking Atlantic avenue also look for the Pineapple Grove Arts District, and you can add another hour or two to your afternoon checking out the cool shops and artsy-fartsy stuff along the streets. Walk a few blocks and you'll find a great coffee house, Coffee District, where we had the hugest and best piece of carrot cake ever! We also love the Espresso and they serve cupcakes, something that is impossible to find in Broward County.
