Gays Voted as a block in Philadelphia
Mayoral Election
|
|
A
study by
Equality Forum, an international gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT)
civil rights organization, suggests that gay and lesbian voters voted as a block
in the recent mayoral primary election in Philadelphia and that gay and lesbian
voters were markedly more likely to support their candidate than their
neighbors. The study found that gays voted by about two to every one vote for
Michael Nutter, the winning candidate, in the citywide vote. “The
study is important both in its methodology and the result,” said Malcolm
Lazin, Executive Director of Equality Forum. “It demonstrates that even
in a field of gay-friendly candidates, a candidate who can provide the right
cues can be the beneficiary of a GLBT block vote. Block voting increases a
group’s political importance and power.” The May 15, 2007 Democratic
primary, which is tantamount to election in heavily-Democratic Philadelphia,
featured five well-known politicians: two longtime Members of Congress, a
former City Councilman, a State Representative who chairs the Appropriations
Committee in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and a wealthy former
Deputy Mayor. The former City Councilman, Michael Nutter, spent most of the
race lagging in fourth place before he surged to victory, garnering 36.6% of the
citywide vote. The Equality Forum study reviewed the votes cast in seven
distinct Philadelphia gay neighborhoods and found that Nutter garnered 74% of
the vote in these neighborhoods. A review of the top 12
Philadelphia tracts identified in the U.S. Census as having the
most same-sex couples residing in the same household found that Nuttter received
69% of the vote in these census tracts. The study compared the percentage of
votes from the gay neighborhoods and census tracts to the percentage of votes
each candidate received in the respective wards. The gay voting divisions
averaged a 17% higher percentage vote for Nutter than the respective overall
ward percentage. “Nutter was viewed as a progressive outsider by a community
that is perceived as outside the mainstream,” said Lazin. “Nutter
actively campaigned for the gay vote and sent cues that he embraced diversity
and wanted to shake up the establishment for
Philadelphia’s benefit.”
“We believe that our methodology can be used to measure GLBT voters in
municipal, state and federal elections,” said Lazin. “Our hope is that
this study will encourage exit polls of GLBT voters in the 2008 federal primary
and general elections. By focusing on areas across the nation with identifiable
gay neighborhoods, an exit poll can generate a more comprehensive picture about
GLBT voters and why they voted for a candidate.” |

Carnival Center for the
Performing Arts and
Elephant Eye Theatrical |
|
Carnival Center for the Performing Arts
announced today that is has joined
Elephant Eye Theatrical in an initiative to create new book
musicals for Broadway. Formed in late 2005 by producers Stuart Oken, Michael
Leavitt and Five Cent Productions,
Elephant Eye is capitalized at
$8,000,000 and has four projects in advanced stages of development, including
the recently announced The Addams Family. “Carnival
Center is very pleased to be joining Stuart Oken, Michael Leavitt and 14 other
prominent performing arts organizations and presenters as a strategic member of
Elephant Eye. With this venture, Carnival Center is taking a pro-active role in
the creation of exciting new musicals that will play Broadway and stages around
the world, including Carnival Center,” said Michael Hardy, president and CEO. In addition to joining
Elephant Eye in this initiative,
Carnival Center also creates
and supports new works and artists through its Miami Made commissioning project
and its partnership with other
South Florida arts organizations. To date,
Carnival Center has
commissioned 11 new works, four of which premiered at the Center during its
inaugural season. Four more will be staged during the 07-08 season. Carnival
Center joins the following other new non-profit members of
Elephant Eye: Raymond F.
Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach, FL; Tampa Bay
Performing Arts Center in Tampa, FL; Proctors Theatre in Schenectady,
NY; The Victoria Theatre Association in Dayton, OH; The New Jersey
Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ; Theater of the Stars and The
Fox Theatre (shared) in Atlanta. New commercial presenters are: Broadway in
Chicago, a Nederlander/Live Nation partnership in
Chicago,
IL; Dancap, producer Aubrey Dan’s new initiative in
Toronto, Canada; and
Starmax, a leading entertainment organization in Seoul, Korea. Along with the
original five non-profit performing arts organizations that, as Five Cent
Productions, formed Elephant Eye
with Oken and Leavitt, the company now has a total of sixteen strategic
partners. In a statement, producer Stuart Oken said “Three years ago,
Mick Leavitt, David Fay (President and CEO of the Bushnell Center for the
Performing Arts in Hartford, CT and Managing Member of Five Cent) and I began
conversations about a creatively ambitious content company that would be owned
jointly by a group of non-profit performing arts centers and passionate
commercial entrepreneurs. Today, we’ve concluded phase one of that initiative
and now it’s on to the work at hand - getting in the trenches and attempting to
contribute to Broadway’s rich legacy of musical theater.”
Elephant Eye has a
current slate of projects including:
The Addams Family. A new
musical based on characters, cartoons and sketches by the legendary cartoonist
Charles Addams. Rights were granted by the Tee and Charles Addams
Foundation and marks the first time Addams’ work will serve as the basis for a
stage production. Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, writers of
the 2006 Tony Award-winning Best Musical,
Jersey Boys,
are the librettists for The Addams
Family, Drama Desk Award-winning composer/lyricist Andrew
Lippa (The Wild Party) is
writing the score, and Improbable Theater founders Phelim McDermott and
Julian Crouch (Shockheaded Peter)
will direct and design. Elephant Eye
plans to premiere The
Addams Family in the 2009-2010 Broadway season, preceded by an
out-of-town tryout. Bruce Lee: Journey
to the West. A musical that follows the mythic journey of two
Chinese legends: martial arts star Bruce Lee and the beloved Chinese
warrior god, The Monkey King. The book is by Tony Award winner David
Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly)
and the music and lyrics by Tony nominee David Yazbek (The
Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels)
Bruce Lee: Journey to the West
will be directed by Tony nominee Bartlett Sher (The Light in the Piazza, Awake and Sing.)
Elephant Eye is targeting
Bruce Lee: Journey to the West
for the 2010-2011 Broadway season preceded by one or more out-of-town tryouts
Saved.
Elephant Eye shares creative
leadership with Playwrights
Horizons (Tim Sanford, Artistic Director) on this new
musical based on the acclaimed UA film.
Saved is set at a Christian
high school where students, teachers and parents find faith in unexpected
places. With music & lyrics by Obie winner
Michael Friedman (Gone
Missing, Romeo & Juliet
for Shakespeare in the Park this summer) and
book & lyrics by Olivier Award nominee John Dempsey (The
Witches of Eastwick) & Obie Award winner Rinne Groff (
The Ruby Sunrise, “Weeds”),
Saved will be directed by
Gary Griffin (
The Color Purple) and will open in Spring 2008 at Playwrights

Poverello Food Center. The Congregation organizes the Food Drive each year
as part of its observance of the Jewish High Holy Days. The Poverello
Food Center, located on Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors, serves the Nutritional
Needs of People Living with HIV/AIDS. People who would like to contribute to
the Food Drive should bring non-perishable foods to Etz Chaim’s Kol Nidre
or Yom Kippur Services, which are being held at the

Chairperson of the Committee, is hoping that this year’s collection will exceed
200 bags of non-perishable food. “This year we will celebrate our
thirty-fourth historic year as a spiritual home for GLBT Jews in
South Florida. With the
guidance of Rabbi Harold F. Caminker as our Spiritual Leader, we look forward to
a promising new era of growth and development, and we are asking the members of

Magazine Writer/Photographer Geo Bustamante Turns 21 |
|
As young people become more aware of a gay or lesbian orientation
at a younger age they face greater problems and are more likely to have suicidal
thoughts. The youths who are at the greatest risk for suicide are the ones who
are least likely to ‘come out of the closet’. Suicide may be a way of making
sure that no one ever knows. The United States Department of Health and
Human Services (HHS)
“Report on the Secretary’s Task Force on Youth Suicide” found that “A
majority of suicide attempts by homosexuals occur during their youth, and gay
youth are 2 to 3 times more likely to attempt suicide than other young people.
They may comprise up to 30 percent of (the estimated 5,000) completed youth
suicides.” The report went on to say that almost all gay and lesbian
suicides occur between the ages of 16 and 21. According to Dr. James C. Scott,
a Barry University clinical psychologist, research consistently shows
that GLBT boys and girls are the highest at risk youth population for committing
suicide. But he insists there is hope. “The key to the prevention of this
tragedy is education. These kids need to know that they are not alone, their
situation is note hopeless, and that although they may be “queer”, they are not
abnormal,” said Dr. Scott. “They need to know that their pain will ease
and happiness is possible,” he continued. Geo Bustamante knows that
pain well. Last year the 20 year old Bustamante came out to his parents, which
resulted in immediate estrangement. It’s been more than eight months since that
painful day when he told his parents he was gay, but Bustamante is stronger and
he’s more determined than ever to live a fulfilling and happy life. Geo, a
budding writer and photographer, has become a familiar face in the south Florida
gay social scene. But the young Latino with a quick smile concedes that his teen
years would have been much easier if there had been someone he could have
confided in, a trusted individual that he could have shared his ‘secret’ with.
In researching one of his recent columns on gay youth suicides, Geo discovered
an organization called The Trevor Project (www.thetrevorproject.org),
a non-profit organization that operates the only nationwide, around-the-clock
suicide prevention helpline (866-4UTREVOR) for gay and questioning
youth. “If I had known about The Trevor Helpline when I was a teen, I would
have definitely called the number,” Geo said. “But at least I can
support them now so that they might have the opportunity to help someone else,”
he added. Bustamante is passionate about helping other gay young people who
might be going through what he went through. In less than a month he will
celebrate his 21st birthday and plans on using the occasion to raise
awareness about gay youth suicide….and hopefully some much needed funds. Geo
will celebrate his entry into ‘legal drinking age’ on Thursday, August 23,
beginning at 11 PM, with a birthday bash benefit at downtown
Miami’s
Discotekka nightclub. “Discotekka is pleased to be the host venue for
Geo’s Birthday Benefit for The Trevor Project,” said club owner Joe
Marcella. “When we heard that Geo wanted to raise funds for The Trevor
Helpline, we immediately agreed to have the event at our location. It’s about
saving kids’ and we are glad to do our part,” added Marcella. While
Discotekka is donating a portion of the door proceeds to The Trevor Project and
tickets are available for advance purchase for a VIP Meet & Greet party with Geo
and Miami Beach City Commissioner Michael Gongora, other businesses have
joined in to help. Make it Happen Luxury Car Rentals is providing
transportation to the event for Geo and his closest friends and numerous local
businesses are donating items for a raffle to be held at the benefit. One
hundred percent of all VIP party and raffle proceeds will go directly to The
Trevor Project. A certificate of appreciation will be presented to Geo at the
benefit by Michael Gongora, the city’s first openly gay elected city
commissioner. “I am proud to know Geo Bustamante. He is a powerful young
voice for the gay community in south
Florida. It is
with pleasure that we honor Geo for his effort in educating us about the tragedy
of gay youth suicide and he is to be commended for working to raise funds for
the Trevor Project,”
Gongora said. The Trevor Project officials have also joined The Commissioner in
thanking Geo for his efforts. “We’re grateful that the funds raised from Geo
Bustamante’s Birthday Benefit will help to ensure the Trevor Helpline is open
24/7,” said Charles Robbins, Executive Director of The Trevor
Project. |
