Weekend Wrap-Up

Last Tuesday at Club Azucar, Robert Scott featured the 2nd annual Miss South Florida Pageant. There were 5 very qualified contestants, April Chanel, Noel Leon, Cynthia Dietrich, Tangela Armai, and Crystal West. In the end the winner was Tangela. Congrats to her, Robert, and to all the contestants for a great show!!!

Uncles Nightclub opened last week and Uncles owner Tony Santos treated VIPs to an open bar and catered event that couldn't be beat. The club features a huge dance floor, spectacular lights and an outdoor patio with sand volleyball court. Congrats to "Uncle Tony" and best wishes. Later on that night Fag-Tabulous Fridays returned. Now you can find Jordan Bailey, DJ Chaos and the gang from PM Parties at Uncles.
Saturday night, Miami Beach's new ultra-chic lounge, Halo opened with a performance by Crystal Waters. The crowd was treated to hits Gypsy Woman (La Da Di, La De Da) and My Time. The Mark's List Gang tried out as many of the specialty drinks as we could and we'd like to thank bartenders Rodney and Kurt for putting up with us. We finally settled on the Blueberry Mojito and Jake and Ali's Blues as our favorites. By the way, there are no less than 34 drinks on the menu and that doesn't even count the make-your-own Bloody Mary's. Congratulations to owner Babak Movahedi and manager Jason Tamanini.
After leaving Halo we headed back to Fort Lauderdale for the 8th anniversary of Ultra Saturdays party for women who love women. As Usual Alison and Julie did not disappoint, and the place was jamming with women and their guy friends.
The next stop was Coliseum for their “777” party in which Gary Santis teamed up with Hilton Wolman, and had the club decorated as a casino. DJ Tony Moran rocked the club which was wall to wall people!!
"An Evening with Sandra Bernhard" at the Colony

On Friday July 27th at 7:30pm and 10pm, and Saturday July 28th at 7:30pm and 10pm, Sandra Bernhard will perform at the historic Colony Theater on Lincoln Road. A portion of the proceeds from these four performances will benefit Switchboard of Miami's GLBT Suicide Awareness Initiative. For 25 years, Sandra Bernhard has been challenging fans and critics with her knife-edged humor, satire and emotive performances on film, television and stage. "An Evening with Sandra Bernhard" includes comedy, commentary and music, and Bernhard appears with musical director/pianist, Mitch Kaplan and her band. The SF Weekly praised Bernhard, "One moment, her voice is lulling you into a wistful sigh; the next, she's knocking you back SoBe Social Club Miami Beach South Beach Florida Gay Lesbian Bar several rows with it." Bernhard's last show, "Hero Worship," featured a five piece band and was a post September 11th tribute to Bernhard's commitment to irony - that it, too, has survived September 11th. The show featured a range of musical numbers (some original and some covers). It was a fearless attempt to show that life must continue and the show must go on. Other notable performances include her participation in the "Stormy Weather Benefit '98," organized by Don Henley, which also featured Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell, as well as "The Elton John Tribute for Broadway Cares." Her critically acclaimed 1998, one-woman Broadway hit, "I'm Still Here Damn It!" which played the Booth Theater, had critics raving. Created and conceived by Bernhard, the show first ran for five months off-Broadway at New York's Westbeth Theatre, where it garnered ecstatic reviews. The New York Times called Bernhard's performance "An angst driven, foul-mouthed poison-laced joy ride that banks and careens frenetically through the worlds of fashion, celebrity, rock, and religion. In her own voice, unfiltered, Bernhard is a living, breathing bonfire." The show went on to play sold-out runs in Boston and San Francisco, and one of the Bay Area performances was filmed for an HBO special "I'm Still Here Damn It!" which aired in the summer of 1998) photographed by cinematographer Haskel Wexler, and produced and directed by Marty Callner. Since her first film accolades in 1983 in Martin Scorseses', "The King of Comedy" featuring Jerry Lewis and Robert De Niro, Bernhard has since appeared in numerous films including "Inside Monkey Zetterland," "Hudson Hawk" and more recently, "Dinner Rush." Throughout her career, Bernhard's formidable presence has also had a place on television. From 1991-1996, she portrayed Nancy on "Roseanne," and has had guest starring roles on "Ally McBeal," "Chicago Hope" and "Will & Grace." She has appeared on "Late Night with David Letterman," as well as "The Tonight Show," "Rosie O'Donnell" and "The View." She hosted the season premiere of "MadTV" and the Bravo network recently profiled her career. In 2001, Bernhard hosted her own talk show, "The Sandra Bernhard Experience" for A&E television. Along with writing for performance, Bernhard has put her musings into book form. Currently working on her fourth collection, her books, just as her shows, are full of personal insights, introspective rants, prose and essays. She made her publishing debut in 1987 with "Confessions of a Pretty Lady" and followed that up with "Love, Love, and Love." Her third book, "May I Kiss You on the Lips, Miss Sandra?" was published in 1998, prior to her Broadway run. Her work has also been published in numerous magazines, including The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Conde Nast Traveler, Rolling Stone, Interview, Spy, Elle and Allure. Tickets may be purchased on the internet through www.ticketmaster.com or by calling Ticketmaster at 305.358.5885 To avoid the service charges Tickets may be purchased in person at: Colony Theater 1040 Lincoln Road 305.674.1040 Tuesday-Saturday noon to 5pm. Chicago's 2006 Gay Games Declared a Financial Success
One year after Chicago hosted nearly 12,000 sport and cultural participants at the 2006 Gay Games®, Chicago Games, Inc., (CGI) the host organization for the event, announced today that it has completed the post-Games fundraising and wind down process and that the 2006 Gay Games broke even. Such a positive financial result reverses a 20-year trend, having not been achieved since Gay Games II in 1986. CGI accomplished the result with 2 fewer years planning time than most Gay Games. "We are extremely grateful to our many donors, sponsors, volunteers, partners and vendors whose commitment and contributions made today’s announcement possible," said Tracy Baim, CGI board Co-Vice Chair and leader of the wind-down efforts. "Each deserves the appreciation of our city and the worldwide LGBT sports community." Sponsors and donors remain listed on the Gay Games website at GayGamesChicago.org. "We would like to extend special appreciation to partners Dick Uyvari and Joe La Pat, Chicagoans who significantly funded the 2006 Gay Games international scholarship program and created a Gay Games matching grant program to assist in the post-Games fundraising," said Sam Coady, CGI Board Co-Chair. After a heat wave and other circumstances increased expenses and created the need for additional fundraising, Uyvari and La Pat donated additional financial support. Uvyari is a long-time Gay Games supporter, having competed in six of the seven Gay Games. Other key post-Games donors included Fred Eychaner, Michael Leppen, and former U.S. Ambassador James Hormel and his partner, Tim Wu. "We also extend a special thanks to the international Federation of Gay Games for their significant assistance in ensuring that the 2006 Gay Games finished in a financially sound position," said Kevin Boyer, CGI Board Co-Vice Chair. The FGG is the international governing body of the quadrennial sports & cultural festival. Going forward, the FGG will continue to receive royalties from the 2006 Gay Games DVD, photography-based products and residual commemorative merchandise sales. More than 100 other individuals, vendors and partners also added their support through cash and in-kind donations and expense reductions. The law firm of Sidley Austin extended its pro bono service, assisting CGI as it wound down operations and finances. CGI board members Tracy Baim, Suzanne Arnold, Kevin Boyer, Sam Coady, Kurt Dahl, Eric McCool, Christopher Pries, Renae Ogletree and David Woody as well as CGI former staff members Liz Valenti, Cathy Seabaugh, and Rob Smitherman were among those who assisted in the wind-down efforts. Financial Promises Kept "In 2003 when we launched the bid to host the 2006 Gay Games, we promised our local LGBT community, the City of Chicago, and the worldwide LGBT sports movement that the 2006 Gay Games would break even financially," said Sam Coady. "We also made the commitment to leave a lasting and positive legacy for future Gay Games hosts - a sound business model upon which future Gay Games could be built. We are proud today to have fulfilled those promises." The Gay Games have always been a boon for the local economy. Nevertheless, the past three Gay Games host committees lost significant amounts of money, threatening the future of the quadrennial sports & culture festival. For the first time ever, the Gay Games also faced a competing LGBT sports event. Held in Montreal just one week after the Gay Games, that competing event’s host organization ended up losing several million dollars. Chicago’s business model differentiated itself by dramatically increasing corporate partnerships, relying significantly upon volunteer professionals and pro bono services, establishing a sponsored worldwide marketing and media campaign, and outsourcing non-core elements to third parties. The 2006 Gay Games themselves contributed $50 to $80 million to the local economy, with some estimating that another 10 years of positive LGBT tourism visibility will generate millions more dollars in the long term. "We promised our community in Chicago that our Gay Games fundraising campaign would not undercut other important community projects, including the Center on Halsted," said Suzanne Arnold, Board Co-Chair. "Three-and-one-half-years later, our beautiful new community center is open and Chicago’s LGBT community is stronger than ever. Our local LGBT sports organizations are the strongest they’ve ever been, offering more sports to more people than ever before." Legacy for Chicago and Cologne "Looking to the future, we're proud to have helped inspire our great Mayor Richard M. Daley to launch a bid for the 2016 Olympic Games®," said Kevin Boyer. "Our experience has demonstrated that Chicagoans come together in support of great and important civic endeavors, and we know that almost 3,000 Gay Games-trained volunteers and 400 business sponsors stand ready to help Chicago host the 2016 Olympics." "At the Gay Games VII Closing Ceremony on July 22, 2006, Chicago passed the symbols of the Gay Games to Cologne, Germany, the host of the 2010 Gay Games," said Tracy Baim. "Today, we give to Cologne an even more important legacy - a Gay Games movement that is stronger and more vibrant. We look forward to coming together once again in just three years in celebration of the fundamental principles of Dr. Tom Waddell and the Gay Games - Participation, Inclusion and Personal Best(tm). See you in Cologne!"
