National HIV Testing Day

National HIV Testing Day: Wednesday, June 27, 2007

An estimated 250,000 people in the United States are HIV positive and don’t even know it. Today there are an estimated 1.039 million to 1.185 million HIV-positive individuals living in the United States, the largest number ever according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of these between 252,000 and 315,000 do not know they are infected, and thus are suffering from a lack of treatment, while at the same time may be unknowingly spreading the virus. About 225,000 more who do know their status are not getting the care they need. These numbers will continue to grow unless everyone takes decisive action against the disease. According to the CDC, women are accounting for 29% of the estimated HIV/AIDS cases diagnosed from 2001 through 2004, among these, African-American and Hispanic women account for 82% of diagnoses. Among men, during the same time period, African-American men account for 64% of HIV/AIDS diagnoses and persons between the ages of 13 and 24 account for 11% of the new cases with 38% of these cased being female. National HIV Testing Day is critical to the fight against HIV/AIDS because it presents an opportunity for people nationwide to learn their HIV status, and to gain the knowledge they need to take control of their health and their lives. National HIV Testing Day also provides an invaluable opportunity to dispel the myths and stigma associated with HIV testing, and to reach those who have never been tested or who have engaged in high-risk behavior since their last test. WHAT CAN YOU DO?   Learn about HIV/AIDS and its impact on your community,  Protect yourself against HIV infection, Get tested, its important to know your HIV status and protect yourself and others, Get medical care and support if you’re living with HIV,  Educate others about HIV/AIDS, Volunteer at a local HIV/AIDS organization, Help someone with HIV/AIDS by being a friend, Help end the Stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, Say the words HIV and/or AIDS in a conversation with someone once a day. Care Resource will have several locations people can get FREE rapid (20 minute result) testing on National HIV Testing day including: Broward County Care Resource office, 830 E. Oakland Park Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL  33334 – 954-567-7141, 9:00 am – 5:45 pm, Shoppes of Wilton Manors, (Poverello & Georgies Alibi), Mobile Van – 2226 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, 10:00 am – 8:00 pm. Books & Books Presents Armistead Maupin

Books & Books presents Armistead Maupin (author of Tales of the City) reading and signing Michael Tolliver Lives on Thursday, June 28, at 7:30pm at the Coral Gables Congregational Church 3010 De Soto Boulevard (Across the street from The Biltmore Hotel). Michael Tolliver, the sweet-spirited Southerner in Armistead Maupin's classic Tales of the City series, is arguably one of the most widely loved characters in contemporary fiction. Now, almost twenty years after ending his ground-breaking saga of San Francisco life, Maupin revisits his all-too-human hero, letting the fifty-five-year-old gardener tell his story in his own voice. Having survived the plague that took so many of his friends and lovers, Michael has learned to embrace the random pleasures of life, the tender alliances that sustain him in the hardest of times. Michael Tolliver Lives follows its protagonist as he finds love with a younger man, attends to his dying fundamentalist mother in Florida, and finally reaffirms his allegiance to a wise octogenarian who was once his landlady.  Though this is a stand-alone novel—accessible to fans of Tales of the City and new readers alike—a reassuring number of familiar faces appear along the way. As usual, the author's mordant wit and ear for pitch-perfect dialogue serve every aspect of the story—from the bawdy to the bittersweet. Michael Tolliver Lives is a novel about the act of growing older joyfully and the everyday miracles that somehow make that possible. About the Author: Armistead Maupin is the author of Tales of the City, More Tales of the City, Further Tales of the City, Babycakes, Significant Others, Sure of You, Maybe the Moon, and The Night Listener. Three television miniseries starring Olympia Dukakis and Laura Linney were made from the first three Tales novels. The Night Listener became a feature film starring Robin Williams and Toni Collette. Maupin lives in San Francisco with his husband, Christopher Turner.

"Centaur's Pride CD series is the lClick here to go to Party Groove: Pride 07ongest running annual series in our catalog," says Centaur's Jamie Baxter.  "The great tradition was started with DJ Julian Marsh in 1998 and it is now in the loving and caring hands of DJ Max Rodriguez, who shares our vision to make the CD fun and to put a smile on the face of many." Rodriguez calls New York's Chelsea establishment Splash Bar (SBNY) his DJ home base, where he has held residency since it opened in 1991.  Since arriving in the city from his native New Orleans, Rodriguez has been the featured DJ at New York City Pride several times, played at legendary nightclubs including Palladium, Limelight and Roxy, and he has also been a musical consultant for the VH1 Fashion & Music Awards. Party Groove: Pride 07 once again offers plenty for everyone, providing updated dance remixes of some of the biggest songs to come from Cher, Shania Twain, Laura Branigan, Bonnie Tyler, Sister Sledge and Alphaville.  Also included are new mixes of past Billboard #1 hits "Above The Clouds" by Amber and "Stand Up," as well as Thelma Houston's Grammy Award winning song "Don't Leave Me This Way."  Rodriguez has brought back the group Liquid360 (featured on last years CD) with their new single "Tell Me Right Now (Shout)," and found a 2007 mix of Gina G's classic uber hit "Ohh Ahh Just A Little Bit" to mix alongside Pride anthems "We Are Family" and "Forever Young." Party Groove: Pride 07 will be available in stores nationwide on June 26 including Virgin Megastore, Best Buy and online at www.centaurmusic.com  where visitors can listen to samples of every track on the album.
