GLAAD
presented their South Florida Media Awards at the JW
Marriott Hotel last Thursday night in downtown
Miami. On hand
were Noah’s Arc actor Wilson Cruz and hundreds of members of the media as
well as South Florida’s A-List celebrities and financial supporters of GLAAD
from all over the United States. Congratulations to the recipients (there are
too many to mention). To view more photos of this event, use these links,

Later
that night Edison Farrow celebrated the two year anniversary of Simple
Life Thursdays at Buck 15 Lounge. As usual this weekly event took on
the feel of Frat-Party gone haywire with people standing and dancing on the
furniture, swinging from the rafters and of course guzzling mass quantities of
beer. Daisy Deadpetals spins a mix of 80’s, 90’s and current hits as well
as the occasional anthem. Look for Chyna at the door and congratulations
to Edison
on a fantastic event. To view more photos of this event, use this link,

Those
of you that need that periodic Circuit Party fix were not disappointed last
weekend when Aqua Girl took over
Miami and Miami
Beach. Thousands of Women were on hand at pool parties and events at some of
South Florida’s hottest clubs including Score, Karu & Y and Rain.
Female DJs like Shannon, Alyson Calagna, Pride and Kimberly S spun
to parties that sold out well in advance. Get you tickets early next year! To

celebrated its 9th Anniversary with a packed house. They
featured entertainment by Alyssa Kartiar,
Champagne
Bordeaux, Noel Leon, Misty Eyes,
and some of the Hottest Latin Go-Go Boys (YUMMY) in
South Florida.
As always they featured 2 great rooms with DJ George Valdez spinning the
hottest Latin sounds in the main room, and DJ Surreal keeping the energy
hopping with Hip-Hop in the Video Room. Congrats goes out to the entire staff of
Noche Latina Fridays for 9 fabulous years, and here’s wishing them many more to
come!!
Sidelines
Sports Bar celebrated one year with a two day event that
filled the house! With nearly twenty television screens showing games in
progress all over
America,
this is the bar for casual and serious sports fans. And if the games on TV
aren’t enough, there’s pinball, darts, pool and plenty of peanuts and popcorn to
snack on. Congratulations to Marty, Laurie and Jennifer on a great
first year. And thanks for bringing a new concept to the drive. Use this link to view more photos of this event,

Chi Chi
LaRue came to
Fort Lauderdale
last week, filmed scenes for her next movie and appeared at Boardwalk on
Friday and Saturday night. On hand both nights were loads of Gay Video Stars and
of course Victor, Jim and the boys of Boardwalk. Saturday night,
Fabscout Entertainment’s Howard Marr celebrated a birthday and of course
more porn stars than you could count showed up. Chi Chi LaRue gave out tons of
prizes, including videos and a few unmentionable objects! All in all it was a
great weekend and once again Boardwalk was wall-to-wall busy!

Fairness for All Families |
|
A diverse
group of Florida leaders have joined Fairness for All Families – the
campaign to oppose a constitutional amendment slated for the 2008 ballot that
could strip away employee benefits while barring the passage of future measures
to help Florida families. New members of the campaign’s honorary board of
directors include: U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, former
Department of Elder Affairs Secretary Bentley Lipscomb and Florida NAACP
President Adora Obi Nweze. These prominent Floridians will help guide a
growing group of leaders that includes Florida Alliance for Retired Americans
Secretary Barbara A. DeVane, Civic Concern Executive Director Pamela
Burch Fort, Managing Director and Creative Director of Parsons-Wilson
Gregory Wilson, Florida Consumer Action Network Executive Director Bill
Newton, National NAACP board member Leon Russell, ACLU of Florida
LGBT Advocacy Project Director Robert F. Rosenwald, Jr. and Equality
Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith. “This measure could
jeopardize health care and other employment benefits that many seniors and their
families rely upon across the state,” said Lipscomb. In addition to
broadening its leadership base, the campaign has recently been endorsed by the
Florida branches and affiliates of leading national civil rights organizations
such as the ACLU, NAACP and
Florida NOW.
These organizations join a diverse and growing coalition of seniors, business
leaders, consumer groups and social justice organizations working together to
oppose the effort to take away benefits and enshrine discrimination in Florida’s
constitution. “Everyone should stand against this attempt to make
discrimination part of our state constitution,” said Nweze. “Why strip
away health and partnership benefits already provided by many local governments
and companies across the state?” she asked. More than 8,000 public and
private employers nationwide – including almost half of the Fortune 500
companies – offer health care benefits to employee’s domestic partners or
spouses. “This amendment threatens the legal protections and benefits of
families across Florida,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “I am
honored to work with the campaign to ensure this attack on
Florida
families doesn’t become part of our constitution.” |

Wilton Manors Bowling Social |
|
It's hard to believe that a month has gone by since the first Wilton Manors
Bowling Social, to help raise money for Shadowood II. Over 30 people
participated in the event and we were able to raise over $500 on the first
night. The interest was amazing and the support we received from
many of
you, as well as from local businesses was incredible. I know a lot of you had
prior commitments, but expressed an interest in participating in the next event.
That event will take place next Friday, May 18th. We are asking
everyone to arrive around 9 - 9:30 in order to hold as many lanes as we can
fill. At this point we have 12 lanes on reserve, which comes out to 72
positions. If we have more people turn out, we may be able to fill more lanes
and raise even more money. It was exciting to see so many of you reaching out to
help people who are HIV positive and in need of housing. The Shadowood II
facility provides housing to those who may otherwise be living on the street,
many who are also dealing with addiction problems. When this event was in the
initial planning, we weren't sure how much support we would get. It's refreshing
to see so many people, having fun and also giving back to the community. Thank
you! Prior to the last event, many of you reached out to local businesses on
your own. We received gift certificates from The Melting Pot, Georgies, Java
Boys and Rosies. If any of you know businesses that would like to donate
prizes to our cause, that would be awesome. For those of you who helped out last
time...Thank YOU! Our 50/50 and prize raffle resulted in raising the bulk of the
monies, not to mention a very generous winner who gave his half of the 50/50
back to the Shadowood II cause. Thanks RC! So mark your calendars and
please R.S.V.P back to help hold your position for the bowling social. Also, if
you are unable to R.S.V.P. back, please show up on Friday. Many people came last
time, bought raffle tickets, socialized and had just as much fun as those of us
bowling. Where else can you have a great time and give back to the community in
such a much needed way! |

Bashing Back: Wayne Besen on GLBT People,
Politics and Culture |
|
Author and
activist Wayne Besen announced today he will launch his latest book, "Bashing
Back: Wayne Besen on GLBT People, Politics and Culture," at the Second
Tuesday Lecture Series, at the LGBT Center in New York, on Thursday, May
17 (7PM).
Bashing Back (Harrington Park Press) offers a powerful defense of secular and
progressive values, while unsparingly eviscerating religious charlatans and
right wing hypocrites. It also provides innovative approaches towards activism
and practical advice for victory. For more information on the event, please
visit
www.secondtuesday.org. "Wayne
Besen has powerfully proven
once and for all that he is one of the most important voices in the progressive
community," said author and advocate David Mixner. "His unique
insights, powerful outrage, and uncompromising commitment to real justice and
equality make this book a must-read for those who care. He pulls no punches when
it comes to the issues and people of our time. Finally, someone with the courage
to call it as he sees it - how refreshing." "Wayne Besen's comedic wit
and knowledge base compels you to read through this book," said Joe Kort,
MSW,
author of '10 Smart Things Gay Men Can Do To find Real Love.' Like
watching the Daily Show, Besen makes gay news entertaining, enlightening and
informing. This book is a valuable resource both currently and as time goes by -
a great read for gay history in
America.
At The Second Tuesdays Lecture Series, Besen will discuss the danger of the
ex-gay myth, as well as touch on current affairs that are addressed in Bashing
Back. The book is a compilation of his controversial syndicated weekly column
that runs in the
Falls Church
News Press, 365Gay.com and several other leading GLBT publications. Wayne Besen is the
Founding Executive Director of Truth Wins Out (TWO) and author of "Anything
But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth"
(Harrington Park Press, 2003). In 2006, Besen was named one of the Advocate
Magazine's "People of the Year" for his work with TWO. "I enthusiastically
invite my readers to come to this event and to also periodically visit
www.WayneBesen.com for additional book tour dates," said Besen. "This
book is crucial in helping the progressive community find its voice and the
courage of its convictions." Besen has appeared as a guest on leading news
and political talk shows including: the NBC Nightly News, CNN's Talk Back
Live and The Point, Fox's O'Reilly Factor and Hannity and Colmes, MSNBC News and
Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Prior to founding TWO,
Besen served as a spokesperson for five years with the Human Rights Campaign.
