Happy Anniversary to Me |
|
This week marks the beginning of my 3rd year writing
this column on Jumponmarkslist.com. Although I have been writing “Out With
Scott” for over 8 years, the last 2 have been the most satisfying. Writing for
the Internet has advantages; the speed I can deliver information and
having space to include as much as I need
are a couple. But nothing beats knowing your column is read by thousands of
people every day!
I look forward to writing for you in this
third year and know this... you ain't seen nothing yet! |

Annual Aqua Girl |
 |
|
Aqua
Girl ’07, May 10 - May 13 is expected to attract thousands of women from all over the world,
converging on
Miami
/ Miami Beach for five fun-filled days of music, dancing, dining, comedy,
kayaking and friendship – as only women can do! Now in its seventh year, Aqua
Girl has evolved to be ranked among the most widely attended events for women
and is the nation’s largest non-profit women’s weekend. One hundred percent of
the proceeds from Aqua Girl benefits the Aqua Foundation for Women
(previously the Women’s Community Fund), a not-for-profit 501(C)3 organization,
which also produces the event. The Foundation’s primary mission is to promote
the equality, strength, health and visibility of gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgender
(GLBT) women. Aqua Girl ’07 events take place at some of the hottest nightclubs,
restaurants and venues in the
Miami
area, with an A-List roster of entertainment, including DJs Shannon, Pride,
Nena, Dez Rock, Kimberly S and Alyson Calagna. Culinary delights abound,
with a dinner party at
Pearl
on
Miami Beach and a Jazz Brunch at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens. Prior
to the five-day whirlwind of events, the Miami Gay &
Lesbian
Film Festival is co-sponsoring a special Aqua Girl screening of the campy
film, Itty, Bitty, Titty Committee at the Colony Theatre on
Miami Beach. Following the film, attendees will head over to The Space in
Miami’s trendy Wynwood Arts District, for cocktails and an array of
culinary delights from celebrity chefs. Celebrity hosts include actress
Nicole Vicius, famed director Jamie Babbit (L Word, Ugly Betty, But
I’m A Cheerleader) and producer Andrea Sperling. Laughter is universal,
and Aqua Girl’s “Night of Comedy” at the Colony Theatre on Saturday, May 12
promises an evening of non-stop laughs with veteran comedian René Hicks.
One of America’s favorite lesbian comedians, René has performed her intelligent
and universally appealing humor in countless clubs across the US and
internationally, resulting in her having been the first African-American woman
nominated for an American Comedy Award for “Best Female Stand-Up.” She has
appeared on numerous television shows, including her own half hour special -
Comedy Central
Presents...René
Hicks, as well as ABC’s Politically Incorrect,
Showtime’s Full Frontal Comedy and NBC’s Comedy Showcaes
with Louie Anderson. She also has appeared at famed
Nevada
hotels including Harrah’s, Bally’s, and
MGM
Grand.
Nearly 2,000 people are expected at Saturday’s Aqua Beach Ball, one of
the centerpiece events of Aqua Girl ’07. Hosted by MTV’s Rachel and
Veronica, the poolside bash at the Doubletree Surfcomber Hotel will
feature the non-stop spin talent of
DJ
Pride, along with a high-energy performance by one of
New York’s Finest, Lori Michaels and the
Girls. Tickets for individual events range from $5 to $85, with event passes
conveniently packaged and economically priced.
South Florida
residents may purchase tickets (cash only) at Pride Factory, 845 North
Federal Highway,

GLCC
Shows Appreciation For Contributions |
|
The Gay & Lesbian Community
Center of South Florida
(GLCC) held an overwhelmingly successful event earlier this month at
the beautiful Lazy Lake residence of Lyn McFarland and Alex Poblet.
The event enabled the GLCC to show appreciation for the contributions, time and
energy of their volunteers. Event sponsors included Tarragon Development
Corporation, The Gibson Group and the homeowners who graciously offered
their luxurious, waterfront home as a setting for the successful night. The
event was attended by over hundred dedicated volunteers and supporters who serve
the GLCC in a variety of ways. "At this exciting time for the GLCC it's more
important than ever to show appreciation of our volunteers" reports Paul
Hyman. "As we launch a capital campaign, begin construction of our new
building and become a more integral connection point for our community, we
especially appreciate our volunteers and financial supporters." Paul Hyman,
Executive Director of GLCC personally showed his commitment and
thanks by tending bar alongside Director of Development, Robert Boo.
Additionally, Nicole Martin-- Operations Manager, Sandra Garcia--
Volunteer Coordinator, Jorge Gardela-- Health and Community Services
Manager, and Jeff Grigsby and Magno Morales from the PALS
PROJECT showed their enthusiastic appreciation of volunteers by welcoming
and serving hot appetizers to guests at the catered event. The GLCC receives
more than 48,000 hours of service annually from nearly 500 volunteers. Seven
days a week the GLCC is utilized by more than fifty gay, lesbian, bisexual,
transgender, AIDS and other health related groups and 12-Step groups.
Programming includes a range of cultural, political, counseling and social
service, recreation, spiritual, outreach and education, volunteering and support
functions. Volunteer hours help maintain and support these programs and

Tigertail Productions Presents WigOut! |
What do outrageous wigs and adult dress-up games have to do with
innovative culture? If you are
Miami’s
pioneering arts presenter Tigertail Productions, quite a lot, when they
hold their annual fundraising event WigOut! On the River on
Saturday, May 19, from 8:00 to 11:00 pm. “We always mount
theme-parties that allow us to both have fun and bring out the artist in all of
us,” says Mary Luft, Tigertail’s founder and Executive Director. “With
wigs as the jumping off point, we’ll have wig-related original artwork for
sale in our silent auction,
Miami
drag-icon Adora performing in one of his signature sky-high wigs, a “best wig of
the night” competition, and a lot more.” WigOut! On the River takes place at the Nord
River Studio & Gallery,
422 NW North
River Drive,
Miami
(just west of seafood river restaurant Garcia’s), a large industrial space
with spectacular waterfront views, indoor and outdoor lounges, its very own
jacuzzi, and free and secure parking. In addition to Adora, there will be
performances by Jan Sebon and his Haitian world-beat band and dancer
Octavio Campos, among others. Video wall projections will be provided by
Kevin Wynn and DJ Yard will be spinning his eclectic rhythms. Food
and drink will, as at any party, be part of the package, along with wigs in
abundance and on-site hair extension makeovers with Rapunzel Salon. “Since
Tigertail is an arts organization, we wanted to mount a silent auction that
included high-quality, primarily Miami-based artists,” says event chair and
visual artist Lina Eichenwald. “WigOut! attendees will have a chance
to bid on these pieces along with other auction items at the event.”
Participating artists include Carlos Alves, Robert Chambers, Lou Anne Colodny,
Lina Eichenwald, Lynne Gelfman, Robin Griffith, Rebecca Guarda, James Herring,
Julie Kahn, William Keddell, Susan Lee Chun, Christian Meesey, Maritza Molina,
Charo Oquet, Ralph Provisero, Brian Reedy, Karen Rifas, David Rohn, Claudia
Scalise, Carol Todaro, Ivan Toth Depeña, Tom Virgin and Wendy Wischer.
Tickets are $75 each, and partially tax-deductible as a donation since Tigertail
is a non-profit organization. They may be purchased online at
www.tigertail.org or by phoning
305 545 8546. Parking information and directions are available as well on
the website. The Nord River Studio & Gallery is a wheel chair-accessible
location.
