Pink Sunday Recap & Revenue Disbursement By Loving Mother Agatha Frisky

Despite the inclement weather, attendance at this year’s Winter Pride Tampa Bay and the following Sunday proved that there are still many active members of the GLBT community that support Winter Pride and the needy charities of the Tampa Bay area. The First Annual Pink Sunday was held February 24th at City Side Lounge, Czar Nightclub and Lounge 714 and was hosted by The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, in partnership with the Gaybor District. The theme was Pride, Presence, and Passion and the three-tiered extravaganza provided just the right amount of each element in the theme! There were plenty of performances, prizes and payouts, including 50/50 raffles occurring at each bar and gift basket raffles for items like a Gaybor Getaway for two! The event raised over $3700.00, (including Pink Card purchases and t-shirt revenues donated by MC Film Festival) and collectively, this all-day party brought in over fifteen hundred attendants! For its first year, Pink Sunday was very much considered a huge success in the eyes of the celebration’s creator and ‘ring leader,’ Guard Fred W. Swallow of the Sisters. “I am so proud to see my vision brought to manifest!” said the guard during the Passion Party at Czar.  “All the participating bars were so wonderful with us and truly helped make it a success.  I just know next year will be even bigger!”  The Guard gave special thanks to Jimmy B. at City Side, Sandy at Czar and John at 7@14. The net total after cost was $3064.00, which allowed the Sisters to donate $1023.70 to Winter Pride Tampa Bay, $1020.63 to Francis House and divide the leftover donations for Wheels of Success, Metropolitan Charities, The Gaybor District, and The Boys and Girls Club of Tampa Bay, while putting $120.63 into the Sisters’ General Fund. Checks were presented by Little Aggy, the Miniature puppet version of the Mother Superior, Sister Agatha Frisky, to representatives of each organization. The Sisters are in the process of getting their non-profit 501c3 status and, upon doing so, will begin launching new events with higher fundraising goals than ever. “We just keep getting bigger and bigger,” said Sisters’ Vice President, Sister Monica Muffdiver. “This is truly the year of the Sisters….  By this time next year, you all better be ready for us!” With safer sex outreach and fundraisers like these, the GLBT community will be waiting with open arms.

News From Winter Party Tampa Bay

“As most everyone knows, just after the 3rd annual "Pride in the Park" was kicked off by the Honorable Pam Iorio, the Mayor of Tampa, heavy rain, lightning and wind moved through the area creating unsafe conditions for attendees, vendors, concessionaires and entertainers. Much to the disappointment of all, "Pride in the Park" was washed out by Mother Nature; a fate met by several other outdoor festivals in Tampa that day. Many have asked if there will be a rain date. Unfortunately the answer is no; the cost to re-set up the event (i.e. fencing, table and chairs, and port-o-lets rental; security) is substantial. However, that does not mean Winter Pride Tampa Bay is in financial trouble. Quite the contrary, WPTB is in good financial position to begin planning for next year's Winter Pride Weekend. In fact, we have already scheduled our next fundraiser - WPTB's first ever comedy show on Sunday, April 13 at the Tampa Improv featuring national comedian Scott Silverman. The show starts at 9:30 p.m. Tickets will be available soon. The WPTB board wishes to thank everyone who supported the 2008 "Pride in the Park," through sponsorships. donations, advertising and volunteering. We are looking forward to working with each of you as the planning begins for next year.”
Mark's List Florida Gay Lesbian Nightclubs Hotels Dining Retail Earth Hour

Don’t worry, that’s not a typo. It’s a reminder to flick off your lights from 8-9 PM on March 29th.  It’s Earth Hour 2008, a now global event that started in Sydney last year with 2.2 million people participating. This simple-act-turned-massive-collective-measure reduced the city’s energy consumption by more than 10% - the equivalent of taking 48,000 cars off the road for one hour.  This year, the attempt is to make it a global movement and you can help by turning off your lights for just one hour on Saturday March 29th. Okay so now that you have that on your calendar, here are some things to consider: The people of the United States represent less than 5% of the world’s population – yet that 5% gobbles up more than a quarter of the planet’s resources.  The good news is we can make a world of difference simply by changing our habits. Here’s a look at how a single act can help (or hurt) the environment—especially when it’s shared by millions.

·         If the thermostats in every house in America were lowered 1 degree Fahrenheit during the winter, the nation would save 230 million barrels of crude oil

·         If homebuilders installed one dual-flush toilet instead of a standard low-flow toilet in every new house built in 2008, they would save 1.65 billion gallons of water a year.

·         One hour of using a gas-operated leaf blower produces the same amount of greenhouse gases as a car driving 4,400 miles. Use a rake, for goodness’ sake!

·         If every American switched to receiving just one bill as an electronic statement instead of a paper one, this one-time savings would be 217,800,000 sheets of paper

·         Replacing just one 500-sheet roll of virgin toilet paper a year with one 500-sheet recycled paper in every American household would leave 424,000 trees standing – 16 times as many trees as in Central Park.

·         If every American household turned off the lights for one hour at 8PM local time on March 29 during Earth Hour 2008, they would prevent more than 16,610 tons of carbon dioxide from being released

Although one is referred to in a song as “the loneliest number,” it can also be the beginning of something extraordinary. For more info about this global effort go to www.earthhour.org

Mark's List Florida Gay Lesbian Nightclubs Hotels Dining Retail Instinct Magazine's Entertaining At Home Issue
Instinct's April issue tackles the theme of entertaining at home, so who better to feature on the cover than Jesse Brune, chef extraordinaire from Bravo's Work Out. It may seem like the 27-year-old Seattle native has found his calling on the television program, but as he tells it, he was initially a bit hesitant to take the on-camera gig. "I didn't think I could do a show about working out," he says of time when he joined the cast. "I didn't know if it was my passion. I did the show really because they said they would feature me cooking. So I said, why not?" Jesse also looks back at the now-hilarious trials of coming out at age 15: "I had a total fascination with New Kids On The Block. Mariah Carey too. It was all right there in [my] journal." Naturally, his sneaky kid sister read the journal. "I so knew then," says Bethany Brune. "When I read NKOTB and Mariah Carey? C'mon! Plus, kids would say little things about Jesse being gay at school. I totally beat up all the boys!" Brune also discusses the catch that came along with enrolling in the Le Cordon Bleu program at the California School Of Culinary Arts to become a Chef. "With all of the cooking culinary school requires, I started noticing all my friends -- myself included -- gaining, like 50 pounds. Not cute!" Check out Instinct's April issue to find out how Jesse eventually overcame his personal weight issues by carving out a career helping others achieve a healthier lifestyle on Work Out. Instincts April issue also includes interviews with Janet Jackson, Joan Rivers and Swedish pop star Robyn.

Recycled Blues

Recycled Blue JeansOne of South Beach's best kept local secrets is about to be revealed.  I have discovered one of the best clothing stores that also features accessories that are unique, antique, recycled by hand and still affordable! That store would be Recycled Blues.  For the Pub Crawlers and Children of the Night, you will never see an open store but I have seen their Blue Jeans, t-shirts, hats and boots in their windows and always wanted to see what they had when they were open.

recycled Blues Miami Beach FloridaI finally had the chance to get in and find out what this store was all about.  I was greeted by both Owner Veronica and her son Numa when I entered making me feel welcome.  As I perused the racks and found about 100 things I wanted, I also discovered that this is an all-encompassing Antique and Vintage Clothing Store as well as a place that has both silk screening and hot presses to change items such as an original Boy Scout shirt with all the patches into a one of a kind piece of art.  If you are looking for that perfect vintage tee from the 60's to 90's this is the place.  Going to a Theme Party?  Did I mention they have 21 Member's Only jackets?!?!

Recycled Blues has been selected by Streamline Press as most notable vintage clothing boutique and was published in The Vintage Fashion Directory.  Their items are so original that they have been used in movies and shows like Bad Boys 2, Mtv DJs, Latino soap operas as well as helped style Lenny KravitzShakira, Enrique Iglesias, Stone Temple Pilots, and Sherryl Crow.  They are know internationally and Maxim (German Edition 2003) called "The Blues" a "must stop in SoBe when traveling to Miami."

Their racks are filled with jeans, pants, shorts, T Shirts, purses, hand bags, cowboy books and shirts, sunglasses, belts and buckles (i.e. Jim Morrison of The Doors), jackets, vests, motorcycle jackets, sweaters, and Numa's prize collection of real military clothing and accessories.  Need a gas mask?  They got them!

With soft Raggae music playing and a huge bulldog to play with you could actually find yourself spending hours in there without even realizing it.  Recycled Blues has been at that location for over 18 years and seem like the perfect South Beach local destination.  So, if you want something completely unique and want it to also be authentic, then you have to get in to this store.

Dining OUT

Sugar N Spice

I love it when a business is sold to great new people and changes for the better.  That is true in the case of Sugar n Spice Restaurant, formerly Herban Kitchen.  Owners Jean and Vero wanted to stick with the French cuisine but realized that they needed something extra to survive in Southern Florida--so they created a cuisine and called it Floridian French

sugar n spice restaurant fort lauderdale floridaFor those who have dined at the former, Sugar n' Spice is renovated, rejuvenated, and reinvented. There is a large face front bar with seating for about twenty and enough tables to accommodate any size party.  With a wonderful palate of colors you can not help but feel bright and cheery while dining there.

I had Calamari and Zucchini Sticks that were good and quick and light. I also had the Chicken and Avocado Salad (salads come in both small and Entree size) that featured poached chicken breast, avocados, mandarin oranges and tomatoes over mixed greens sprinkled with pine nuts.  Their Honey Dijion dressing is perfect, light, and does not have the overpowering "mustardy" taste found in other places.  I also tried the Chicken Dijionaise which has a whole boneless chicken breast grilled to perfection and topped with a creamy mustard and mushroom sauce.  To tell you the truth, they were not skimpy on the chicken and, once again, the sauce was amazing, not at all overpowering.

While their menu is Floridian French, it features a lot of healthy items and localized or Americanized items. Entrees include meats like NY Strip, filet mignon, veal, and chicken as well as a wide variety of items from the sea like shrimp, tuna, tilapia, and sole.  This is a rather affordable place to eat, most meals come in at $15 to $30. So come in, ask for Jean, and let Vero create something great for you.

Tap Tap

tap tap haitian restaurant miami beach florida cuisine reviewYou know those restaurants that you drive past time and time again and have no idea what they offer, but you keep thinking you want to check  out anyway?  I've had my eye on this restaurant, Tap Tap Restaurant, on 5th Avenue on Miami Beach for quite some time.  Tap Tap Haitian restaurant features a lot of items native to the homeland and the decorating alone is worth a stop by.  I think there are only three mass produced items in the building and those are two lights on the ceiling. Your eyes will be drawn to the one-of-a-kind artwork adorning all of the walls, tables, doors, and even the floors.

tap tap foodThe food is Haitian and that includes a lot of pork, chicken and fish. There are a lot of items that are fried and if you are on a strict diet, maybe this isn't the restaurant for you.  While checking out the menu, you can't help but notice that everything is bilingual; entrees are called Gwoplat and appetizers are T i Plat.  The Griyo is Fried Pork Chunks that come with an Au Jus that is absolutely delicious. The Au Jus is also used for the Poul Boukanen (1/2 Grilled Natural Free Range Chicken) and each came with a Haitian version of Rice and Beans that was great and different. The server also brought out a bowl of cornmeal as another side that tasted like buttered grits and were delicious.

tap tap busTap Tap was alive, vibrant and amazing and I had a front-row seat to the kitchen, and let me tell you, everything is authentic and hand made.  I happened to eat when there was a live band playing in the back room that was the best accent to an already wonderful experience.  So drop by, check out the interior and be amazed by the food.

Oh, you'll want to take a look at the bus out front, you can't miss it!

 Pridelines Youth Services GLBTQ Prom

As prom season draws near, young people everywhere are gearing up for their annual prom.  For most of these young individuals, their concerns rest on finding the right dress, tuxedo and prom date.  Never once does it cross their mind that prom is not going to happen or that they will not be able to go with the date of their choice, without being ridiculed or harassed. Prom is a memory that lasts a lifetime, and something that most people take for granted. While more and more gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth are breaking down the 'prom date' barriers; there still remains a lack of social and enriching activities for GLBTQ youth that are safe and positive environments. Since 1995, Pridelines Youth Services has hosted an annual Prom for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning (GLBTQ) youth living in South Florida.  This signature event, now in its 13th year, has touched the lives of thousands of youth.  In the last few years alone, hundreds of youth from Dade and Broward County have attended our annual Prom. This year, Pridelines has partnered with Florida International University's GLBT Student Organization, Stonewall to hold this event on the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus. In doing so, we hope to exceed the attendance numbers of prior years as the facility can accommodate upwards of 500 revelers. We will also have outreach opportunities for local GLBTQ organizations to provide information and resources. This year's theme is "Pridelines: Runway Goes Green" -what happens when fashion meets refuse! "This year it is all about being environmentally fabulous," says the Youth Events Committee Chairs.  Youth are invited to take the challenge -create and wear an outfit made completely from recyclable materials.  Youth may also come in their usual styles. All youth can sign up to 'walk the runway' and strut their stuff. This is only the beginning. It is our goal is to raise $20,000 to provide yearlong youth events that support fun and safe social activities for youth in South FloridaEquality Florida, Safe Schools South Florida (formerly GLSEN) and Pridelines are working together to program these events. We are asking for each of you to support the next generation of 'our' community.  Pridelines Youth Services has and continues to make a difference in the lives of the often forgotten and ignored GLBTQ youth community.  The youth, staff, volunteers and board work very hard to create and maintain a safe environment for GLBTQ youth, but we could never do it without the help of concerned citizens and business leaders. In addition to the warm philanthropic glow that comes from making a difference in the life of a youth, we can provide marketing and branding opportunities on our website and printed material through our signature adult Gala. The following are areas in which you can assist in reaching our goal: Decorations, Food & Beverages, Photographer, Promoting prom in the media, underwriting the event, providing a product or service suitable for raffling or for inclusion in goodie bags, Critical services such as printing. Pridelines Youth Services believes that all young people deserve the opportunity to engage in activities where they can be themselves without fear of harassment and ridicule. We invite you to embark on this journey of "unity" and witness the power it has to make a difference that will last a lifetime for these youth. Below is a list of sponsorship levels for your consideration. You may also send your contribution by check payable to Pridelines Youth Services at PO Box 014340 Miami, FL, 33101. For more information please call 305 807 7304 or email vivian@pridelines.org. We hope that you will be a part of this effort by generously choosing your level of sponsorship.

Winter Party Festival Sets Record Attendance

The 2008 Winter Party Festival was an extraordinary success, with record attendance at its signature event, the 15th Annual Beach Party. Held from February 23rd to March 3rd, this year’s festival drew more than 10,000 total attendees across more than two dozen events.  Produced by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force it featured an expanded line-up of cultural events and programming for specific segments of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, as well as world-class dance events at some of the most popular nightclubs in South Beach, Miami and Fort Lauderdale. The festival culminated in the famous Winter Party Beach Party, which attracted approximately 6,000 guests.  The increase in attendance was fueled by significantly more attendees from Western Europe and the United Kingdom. In May, when final reconciliations are completed, the Task Force will donate two-thirds of the festival's proceeds to the Dade Community Foundation to support LGBT organizations in Miami-Dade. The remaining one-third will be used to support the Task Force’s actions nationwide. “We’re proud to continue to grow the Winter Party Festival into a world-class event that draws guests from around the globe and remains 100% of, by and for the LGBT community,” said executive director Matt Foreman. “The broad program of events demonstrates our commitment to inclusion and diversity as well as raising awareness about the valuable work of the Task Force in communities across America,” he added. This year's line-up included new events for women, a dinner dance for the transgender community, an art exhibit, a Hollywood-themed party for youth, an interfaith service and a family picnic.  Record-breaking highlights include more than 450 guests at the Showtime Departure Lounge event; 2,700 attendees at the Pool Party at host hotel, the Doubletree Surfcomber; 2,000 spectators at Winter Party Runway, a fashion show sponsored by aussieBum on Lincoln Road; and more than 60 journalists from countries as far afield as Turkey, France, Ireland, Germany, Brazil and the U.K. To support the organization’s pro-LGBT actions, Task Force field organizers identified nearly 3,000 people interested in helping defeat the anti-marriage constitutional amendment that will be on Florida’s November ballot, while staff from the Movement. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force was the first national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights organization and remains the community’s uncompromising progressive voice. They fight for equality and justice by building grassroots power through training, advocacy, organizing and forward-thinking research and expertise. They challenge not only the status quo in mainstream America, but politics as usual within the LGBT community, and they refuse to make political compromises that would leave anyone behind.  The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Foundation is a 501(c)(3) corporation.   More information is available at www.theTaskForce.org. Artistic Director Mark Hardin is proud to bring “Diva by Diva” to the Orlando stage. I am excited to bring Diva By Diva to our patrons,” said Hardin.  “This concert will surely please every person in our audience at some point in the evening.  The songs we will sing represent iconic women, no doubt, but they also are a part of American life over the last 50 or so years.  Everyone will be singing one of their favorite tunes leaving the theatre! Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at door.  They can be purchased on the OGC web site, www.orlandogaychorus.org; and at these businesses, Urban Think Bookstores, 625 E. Mark's List Book of Tens Coming Soon

Introducing the Mark’s List Book of Tens. We’re out to identify the hottest bartenders, go go boys and girls, barbacks, waiters, leather men and women, drag queens and kings, tattoos, bears, artists, DJs, butts, authors, performers and fruit flies in Florida. We’re going to uncover the trendsetters, the most fabulous and interesting LGBT people in the Sunshine State. From power couples and politicians to the new hottie behind the bar, Mark’s List will catalogue the people, places and things that you really need to know about.

How does the Book of Tens work? We’ve selected enough weekly topics to get us through our first year. Every week we’ll add a new group of Editors choices to our online book. At the end of the year we’ll have a massive online vote to identify our readers’ favorites and a party to announce the winners and reward them and you, our supporters. At this party we will also announce our Editors Choice Citizens of the Year, the ten people that have worked tirelessly to make Florida a better place for all of us LGBT people to live.

So where do we start? Well, with a beauty pageant. We have to get everyone’s attention, don’t we? We’re immediately looking for the best abs, hottest bartenders and the go go gods and goddesses of Florida, and we want your input. This is a great way for night clubs, restaurants and other businesses to show off their people. Here’s what we need; a photo and brief biography (name, age, college, where they grew up, etc.) of each person you would like to suggest by the dates below. These first few categories are based solely on looks, but like any reputable pageant, we’ll use the bios to break ties.

  • Hottest bartender, submit by 3/19/08

  • Hottest gogo boy or girl, submit by 3/26/08

  • Best abs (yes we want to see some girls!) 4/2/08

Finally, thanks from all of us for your ongoing support. You’ve turned Mark’s List into the second largest online publication (after advocate.com) in America and you have no idea how much we appreciate being The Authority on Gay and Lesbian Florida.

To submit your favorite bartender, gogo boy/girl or best person for abs send a photo and  a short biography to mark@JumpOnMarksList.com

Also on Wednesday March 12th was the 5th Annual Miss Divine Pageant held and produced at Azucar Nightclub Miami. There were 9 contestants (the most ever) who competed in Presentation, Talent, Evening Gown and Interview, and in the end the 2nd runner up was Sheena Deevine, the 1st runner up was Chantel and the new Miss Divine 2008 is Gia Nicole West. Congrats to Tony, Arturo, Giosvani and the entire staff for once again producing a fabulous pageant!!

On Thursday March 13 the Stonewall Street Festival with Chair Bobby Keiser presented a luncheon at Galanga for invited guests to present all their plans for this years coming Street Festival which is going to be extended to 3 days of events. This event was very well attended and was a who’s who in South Florida!!

Paradise

Since Marks List in now covering the Central Florida area, this past weekend I took a trip to Orlando with one of my best friends Rolando Garcia (former reporter of Florida Drag News). We stayed at the Lexington Hotel, which is really a nice upscale hotel for a reasonable price. After taking a nap from the long trip and ordering room service, which by the way was DELISH I started my Saturday night at a bar called Paradise. Paradise is a neighborhood bar with 2 pool tables a nice patio, a Bar-b-que, and some really friendly and cute bartenders. By the way Saturday night all the bartenders wear Sarongs.

Savoy

After that I went to Savoy which is a big bar with 3 areas, the main room that features dancers on Saturdays, the game room with pool tables and Dart machines, and a nice outdoor patio. The place was jamming with lots of cute men.

Revolution Nightclub Orlando

After that I went to Revolution Nightclub Orlando which features Unity on Saturdays where Gay Women and Men play together. As Usual they were busy, and the show in the majestic lounge featured hostess Danielle Hunter, along with cast member Josephine Andrews and special guests Cezanne in her final appearance in Orlando before she moves to Atlanta and Versage

Pulse

When the 2nd show ended I went to Pulse, which even at 1:40 was PACKED. Once again all 3 rooms and the patio were jamming with an eclectic group of gay men, women and even some straight people. Pulse is always Fun, Fun, Fun. After the romp Rolly and I were both wiped out so we headed back to the hotel and collapsed.

Parliament House

Sunday I woke up late, vegged a little a then went out to FiFi’s for Brunch which was fabulous and offers 2-4-1 Mimosa’s and Bloody Mary’s. Afterwards we walked in the park by Lake Eola which featured an extended Farmers Market with lots of great things to but for your home. Then I went local shopping to a few stores, and went back to the room for a nap (ok the drive up kinda knocks me out), and then at night we headed to the Parliament House for their World Famous Sunday T Dance, which as usual did not disappoint. In the show bar Darcel Stephens hosted 3 shows at 7, 10 pm and 12 midnight that featured Armani (my prediction is that this is the  year that this talented entertainer will win her first national pageant, and it is well overdue!!!), Coco Montrese and other guests. The dance floor in the main floor got packed as well. The middle room featured HOT and friendly dancers, and a special shout out to Beverage manager Dana Tetreault who was very nice!!

Let's Get B.U.S.Y!

(Benefiting Under Served Youth)

The GLCC community is encouraged to assist underserved youth by volunteering at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School.  Located at the corner of Powerline Road and NW 13th Street, Thurgood Marshall's students and staff would benefit from supervised classroom volunteer assistance. Ideally-- volunteers will visit the school for short increments of time (up to one hour) a few times per week, to develop rapport with students and staff, and to reinforce reading and other skills with small groups of students.  Training and orientation will be provided, as will classroom supervision by faculty.  The easy, on-line Broward County School Board volunteer application process includes consent to a criminal background check. As a community-minded neighbor, the GLCC aims to recruit volunteers, in order to have a positive impact during the current academic year.  For information please contact Paul Hyman, Executive Director at phyman@glccsf.org.

Latin And Caribbean Film Retrospective

The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) and Florida Atlantic University (FAU) team up, for the 5th year, to present a film retrospective as part of FAU’s Latin American and Caribbean Studies program.  This year Brazilian Cinema is highlighted through "Fome de Film" (which translates to “Hunger of Film”).  The retrospective includes film screenings, seminars, and guest speakers.  Many of the films are accompanied by post- screening discussions with special guests, and either receptions or parties to encourage casual conversation will take place at Cinema Paradiso, April 5 -12.  Luis Duno Gottberg, Director of Caribbean and Latin American Studies at FAU explains, “With such tremendous cultural diversity in South Florida, we hope that the community, through the medium of film entertainment, will develop a better understanding of one another increasing the opportunity for mutually beneficial relationships and acceptance of each others cultures.”   Duno-Gottberg added about Brazilian Cinema, “This impulse to devour and re-process the sometimes conflicting contributions of diverse cultures is one of the leading characteristics of the vibrant culture of Brazil. It reveals an appetite for creation and innovation that crystallizes in the films that we have gathered to honor in this festival, Fome de Film.” Seminars and several of the films will also be presented at Florida Atlantic University's Boca Raton campus, Broward County Main Library, Palm Beach County Main Library, Palm Beach Garden North County Regional Library, and Delray Beach West Atlantic Branch Library.
