 Sidelines Says “NO”! To Expansion

Sidelines Sports Bar

After a taxing negotiation process and painstaking consideration, Sidelines Sports Bar rejected the idea of expanding their space to include the 1,050 square feet of the soon-to-close Dalilah Rose Salon next door. During this month-long process, the owners of Sidelines spoke to a number of loyal customers, vendors, and fellow gay businesses and finally opted to keep their already-popular gay sports bar as is. “We strongly espouse to the idea that ‘things happen for a reason’ and in the case of our expanding, we quickly recognized that Sidelines Sports Bar should keep the same intimate and cozy atmosphere that has made it so successful”, commented Laurie Whittaker, co-owner of Sidelines. “Bigger is not necessarily better”, further stated Marty Kildea, Sidelines’ other co-owner. Kildea goes on, “once a business goes bigger, they can sometimes lose their personality and that is not what we wanted!” Instead, the owners of Sidelines Sports Bar wish to focus their efforts on perfecting their initial objectives and vision at the current location, as well as seeking out other cities that would welcome their “fun & friendly” brand of entertainment. Look for news of other Sidelines’ locations in the coming months. Sidelines Sports Bar, with its 16 flat-screen TVs, 3 pool tables, 3 dartboards, and other video games, continues to provide a fun, friendly and comfortable environment for gay men and women who enjoy all kinds of sports. Sidelines Sports Bar is located at 2031-A Wilton Drive.

Calderon also discusses suddenly becoming a well-known representative of the gay community. "I'm a role model, I guess," he notes. “But I don't want to be a perfect role model. I love to go out and have a good time. Sometimes I do crazy or wild things. And sometimes I do the wrong things and make bad decisions. But we all do, and I think we have to be okay with that." Mike Wood, who did the original interview with Calderon last year, adds, "We are so thrilled that J.P. agreed to appear on our cover again. Last year, his story generated an outpouring of letters and e-mails from around the world and from all walks of life. They were so touched by his story, that we knew his fans would want to know what he's up to today." Instinct's March issue also includes interviews with Patti LaBelle, Ashlee Simpson and Alan Cumming.

 Gay American Heroes

On February 13th, physicians at St. John's Medical Center in Oxnard California declared 15 year-old Lawrence King brain-dead - just two days after he was shot by a fellow student. King, an openly gay student, was shot during English Class in front of 24 other students.  According to classmates, King was known to wear makeup and feminine jewelry to school and was in conflict with other boys for his open display. "He would come to school in high-heeled boots, makeup, jewelry and painted nails -- the whole thing," said Michael Sweeney, 13, an eighth-grader. "That was freaking the guys out." King remains on life support, in the hope that his organs may be donated to save the lives of others. The police and District Attorney’s office have determined that they will charge the suspect with a hate crime. "This is a heinous crime; an unnecessary tragedy,” said Scott Hall, founder and president of the Gay American Heroes Foundation (GAHF), an organization dedicated to honoring LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender) persons who have been murdered because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. And let us not forget the dozens of other murders of LGBT people this past year -- that we know of --such as 25-year old Ryan Keith Skipper of Florida, and 20 year-old Sean Kennedy of South Carolina. We are calling on local officials to do a thorough investigation, and we will keep a close watch as the investigation proceeds. Our thoughts go out to the entire King family, and we thank them for their courage in having Lawrence's organs donated to help others live," adds Hall. Congressman Barney Frank, an Honorary Board Member of the GAHF, added that ”Anti-gay prejudice continues to take the lives of innocent people; that is why the Gay American Heroes project is so important." Daniela Sea, of HBO’s The L Word, also a GAHF Honorary Board Member, said, "I just heard the news about Lawrence King being murdered, and all I can think of, over and over, is ‘not again.’  Lawrence’s school is just 20 miles from my childhood home. It could so easily have been me.. What an amazing spirit he possessed. To express himself so openly and bravely at such a young age is nothing less than heroic. And the fact that he was killed for being honest and open about who he was, is a disgrace and a huge tragedy. He will not be forgotten. We all should honor his memory by doing all we can to stop these hate crimes!" From South Florida, television’s Judge David Young concluded: "Lawrence King is yet another victim of a cruel and vicious attack simply because he was different. As a society, we must never tolerate violence against anyone who looks different or acts atypical of what is often considered normal. The perpetrators of this heinous hate crime should be tried as adults and suffer the consequences for their actions.  Moreover, their parents should bear some of the responsibility for their child's behavior, which is something that is learned.

SoBe Social Club

On Tuesday February 26th, Martini Tuesdays will celebrate its 7 Year Anniversary with an exciting event at Cameo. Martini Tuesdays is Edison Farrow's weekly event for gay professionals that meets in a different upscale venue every Tuesday night at 9pm. Edison Farrow started this event as a gathering for friends, but it grew into a phenomenon for Farrow. The night eventually turned into a ritual of South Beach social life, an event where the smart and fashionable South Florida set come to see and be seen. Edison Farrow now promotes concerts, specials and two weekly events "Martini Tuesdays" and "The Simple Life" Thursdays at Buck15 Lounge. There are now over 5,000 people on the email list and the website www.SoBeSocialClub.com receives over a million visits a year. The night will also feature "The Boys Collection" Photography Exhibition by Melissa Rodwell "The Boys Collection" is a body of work that challenges society's viewpoint on what is perceived as "sexy." Melissa Rodwell's huge photographs (the largest measuring 50” x 60”) celebrate the youthful male body in striking poses that emanate energy, sexuality and vulnerability with a distinct '70s glam-rock, androgynous edge. Photographed over a three-year period, Rodwell envisioned a body of images that would bring back the erotic sexuality of the young male at a time when the current Zeitgeist is oversaturated with female body-consciousness. Weary of shooting female models, she turned her lens to male subjects with breathtaking and thought-provoking results.  In addition Edison will feature a Underwear Fashion Show / Photo Shoot. This exciting Underwear Fashion Show will feature South Beach's most stunning male models strutting and posing in underwear by four different designers. The show will be shot live at the event by Photographer Dennis Dean for an editorial spread to run in an upcoming issue of 411 Magazine.

SoBe Gay Business Development Committee

Miami Beach Mayor Matti H. Bower’s first initiative of 2008 is to create a Gay Business Development Ad Hoc Committee to address a variety of issues critical to the future and welfare of Miami Beach's gay business and residential communities. The mission of the committee will be to bring recommendations to the Mayor and City Commission on how to enhance the gay identity of Miami Beach, and how to make it more attractive and supportive of gay businesses, residents and tourists. While the City's reputation for tolerance and progressive attitudes and its sizeable gay business/residential community have ensured that Miami Beach remains a top-ranked destination for gay travelers, the Ad Hoc committee should seek to identify what opportunities are being missed by evaluating successful strategies of other cities and by seeking local community input. “Gay Pride Week is one of the opportunities being missed and should be specifically evaluated by this committee," said Bower, who has tapped local businessman Babak Movahedi to chair the committee. A former elected official from Washington, D.C., Movahedi serves on the National Advisory Board and Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council of the Democratic National Committee. “We are fortunate to have someone with Babak’s leadership qualities to chair this committee,” said Bower, who will name the other members later this month.
