honored to be the grand marshal of Care Resource’s AIDS Walk” said Jane
“I know of Care Resource, they are known around the country as a model
for AIDS agencies and for them to ask me to be their grand marshal, and
especially for their 20th Anniversary, is just so humbling, I know a lot of
people living with HIV and AIDS and even more who have left us and there is
nothing that means more to me than to be part of this incredible agencies
mission to help others”. Care Resource’s AIDS Walk, (not to be confused
with AIDS Walk Fort Lauderdale which has now changed their name to AIDS Walk
Florida) is committed to helping those living with HIV/AIDS locally in both
Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. “People in the past two years have been
very confused about AIDS Walk Ft. Lauderdale (now AIDS Walk Florida) VS AIDS
Walk Miami” said Terry DeCarlo, PR/Marketing Manager for Care
Resource “AIDS Walk Miami is the ONLY AIDS Walk in South Florida
that makes sure that 100% of the money raised goes to medical care and

The work of Key Biscayne artist Marilyn
Liedman and former Florida
artist Thom Buttner breath new life into Lèche-Vitrines Art Alliance
from February 7-March 1,
in an exhibition titled Reconnecting with the Elements. Over 20
original watercolor and oil paintings will be on display by these fantastic
plein-air (on-site outdoors) painters. The subject matter is traditional yet
classic, nature. The sky, clouds, water are captured at their most magnificent
in the work of these two artists. At what point did we stop looking at clouds?
Thom Buttner wonders. "As a child I thought if I could get high enough, I
could lay in that soft cotton and ride aloft without a care. And who among us
did not watch clouds and imagine those billowing shapes to be all manner of
creatures great and small. Clouds still evoke something passionate in me, it's
hard to put my fingers on it. The essence of these paintings are of lofty dreams
and the spirit unfettered." Clouds as metaphor. Today nature seems to be
squeezed out of our increasingly technological world. In spite of this we all
seek some connection to natural elements: earth, water, sky. Whether it's
gardening, camping or a holiday at the beach, in these things we find solace.
Marilyn Liedman says, "My most recent work is based on using some new
techniques while still maintaining the integrity of the pure watercolor process.
The beauty of plein-air painting is in controlling the watercolor medium while
chasing light and shadow always present in nature.” Cloudscapes is Thom
Buttner's most current body of work. An exploration of color and form,
building on past works, where the artist explored the warm light of dusk and the
hue changes of atmospheric perspective. "This is the technical way of saying
I paint the things that knock me out", says the artist. The Opening
reception is on Saturday, February 9, from 6-9pm
and the artist Marilyn Liedman will be in attendance.

A Florida high
school is "trampling the First Amendment rights of students who support equal
rights for gay people", according to a federal lawsuit filed Thursday by the
American Civil Liberties Union. In its lawsuit, the ACLU describes what
it calls an atmosphere of fear and censorship at Ponce de Leon High School,
where the school board's attorney allegedly has said that expressions like a
rainbow sticker may mean students are members of an "illegal organization." "All
any of us wants to do is be able to talk about gay rights issues without having
to be scared," said Heather Gillman, a 16-year-old junior at the
school. "Nobody should have to worry about being kicked out of school just
for having a rainbow sticker on your notebook." The dispute began last fall
said Gillman. The ACLU sent a letter in November to the school board's attorney
on behalf of Gillman, asking for clarification as to whether a variety of
symbols and slogans, such as the rainbow flag or "I support my gay friends,"
would be allowed at the school. The school district replied that it would not
allow any expressions of support for gay rights at all because such speech would
"likely be disruptive." The district then said that such symbols and slogans
were signs that students were part of a "secret/illegal organization." according
to the ACLU. The ACLU became involved after Gillman and other students
approached it saying there was atmosphere at the school in which students said
they were routinely intimidated by school officials for things such as writing
"gay pride" on their arms and notebooks or wearing rainbow-themed
clothing. According to students, problems began in September when a lesbian
student tried to report to school officials that she was being harassed by other
students because she is a lesbian. Instead of addressing the harassment,
students say the school responded with intimidation and censorship. "Because
the Supreme Court has held that students have a right to free speech at school
unless that speech disrupts the educational process, many administrators think
they can just slap the label 'disruptive' on anything they don't like and get
away with stomping on students' First Amendment rights," said Benjamin
James Stevenson, a staff attorney for the ACLU of Florida. "The law
doesn't work that way," said Stevenson. "School should be a marketplace
of ideas, where students share new ideas and learn about themselves and others.
Just talking about gay rights or any other topic outside of class isn't
inherently disruptive." In the complaint filed Thursday, the ACLU asks the
court for an injunction to stop Ponce de Leon High School officials "from
suppressing students' First Amendment rights in the future." "Writing
something like 'I support gay rights' on your notebook doesn't mean you're part
of some secret conspiracy or shadowy organization," said Christine Sun,
a staff attorney with the ACLU's national Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender
Project. "Schools shouldn't be in the business of trying to frighten
students into silence." Ponce de Leon is located halfway between Pensacola
and Tallahassee, in Florida's panhandle. According to the school's website,
about 400 students are enrolled there.

Florida Premiere of ALASKA
Tigertail
Productions
presents Diana
Szeinblum & Companyin the
Florida Premiere of ALASKAonFriday &
Saturday, February 15 & 16,
at 8:30pm at the Byron Carlyle Theater, 500 71st Street, Miami Beach.
Tickets are $50 VIP best seats & priority entrance, $25 General, $20
Student/Senior. Obsessive,
athletic, raw, sexy, mysterious dance theater, brimming with dark humor, the
latest work from award-winning Pina Bausch-trained Buenos Aires, Argentine
choreographer Diana Szeinblum combines a custom-tailored language of expressive
movement with a pulsing live score and stark theatrical staging. ALASKA
speaks of "that place that we all know, but where no one has ever been" –
an Alaska of the mind. Buenos Aires-based Szeinblum works with a hand-picked
cast of dancers and musicians for every new work, building powerful, physically
charged dances. In ALASKA,
two women and two men come together and fall apart in angular pairings and
ménages simultaneously pan-erotic, veering towards violent and coolly held-back.
Clothes are pulled off and put back on again (the evening contains brief nudity)
as bodies rebel against the ordinariness and underlying loneliness of everyday
life.

Confessions of a Mormon
Boy
Rising Action Theatre
presents the critically acclaimed off-broadway one man play, Confessions of a
Mormon Boy written and performed by Stephen Fales and directed by
Tony Award Winning director Jack Hofsiss (Elephant Man) It will run Feb 28 - March 22, at the new Rising Action Theatre 840 E.
Oakland Park Blvd, Fort Lauderdale. Confessions of a Mormon Boy plays
Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 3:30 and 7 pm. There will be
two special performances: Monday March 17 at 8 pm and
Saturday March 22 at 3:30 pm. Tickets are $25 for the first week and $30
thereafter. Tickets are available at www.risingactiontheatre.com or by calling
1800-595-4849. Cash Tickets are also available at the retail store "OUT"
at 2256 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors. Also available is a dinner and show
package at the five star Primavera Restaurant. 3 course dinner and show:
$55 or $59. Confessions of a Mormon Boy is Steven Fale's compelling,
humorous and inspiring true story about a gay man who went from being a model
Mormon Boy in Utah to a high priced call boy in New York City. His captivating
tale takes audiences through his excommunication from the Mormon Church,
reparative therapy, divorce, male prostitution, and drug abuse as he struggles
to reclaim himself, his children and his "Donny Osmond" smile. The one man play
received a New York Outer Critics Circle Award Nomination for Outstanding Solo
Performance and an Overall Excellence Award at the NY International Fringe
Festival. The book of the play Confessions of a Mormon Boy was a recent
finalist for a Lamda Literary Award. Confessions, in its development
stage, played at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in 2003 and received
unanimous praise from the South Florida press as well as in NY, LA and Chicago.
The very personal play shows the link between spiritual abuse and addiction.
Fales defines spiritual abuse as any time an individual, group or institution
uses religion to justify telling anyone that they are not worthy of God's full
love and blessings. Mormon Boy illustrates the dilemma of those struggling to
reconcile their dreams of becoming straight with the realities of being gay and
what it costs to accept or deny that truth when children are involved. Fales say
he wrote his "valentine to Mormonism and Hedonsim" for his children so
they would some day be able to understand their gay father. I kept thinking that
if I were to die, there wasn't anyone I could fully trust to tell my kids who
their "wicked" dad really was and how much I loved them. Fales former mother in
law is the celebrated Mormon poet Carol Lynn Pearson whose autobiography,
"Goodbye, I Love You" poignantly recounts her relationship with
her gay ex-husband who died of AIDS in her home. Steven married their oldest
daughter Emily. Steven Fales is a classically trained actor with an MFA in
acting from the University of Connecticut. He turned to writing and
stand-up when his perfect Mormon world fell apart. Born in Provo, Utah, Fales
began as young boy singing solos in church. Regional credits include
leading roles at the
Utah Shakespeare Festival, Coconut Grove Playhouse, Connecticut Repertory
Theatre, Sundance Theatre,
and others. He writes a monthly column called "Ask Mormon Boy."
"If one advances
confidently in the direction of his dreams, and
endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he
will meet with a success unexpected in common
hours." -
