A State of Mind (2004)

Following on from the 2002 award winning documentary 'The Game of Their Lives', VeryMuchSo Productions were granted permission from the North Korean Film Authorities to make a second documentary.

An observational film following two young gymnasts and their families for over eight months in the lead up to the Mass Games- involving a cast of thousands in a choreographed socialist realism spectacular- the biggest and most eleborate human performance on earth. Entitled 'A State of Mind' , the film provides a rare glimpse into what is one of the world's least known societies.

North Korea is sealed off from outside influences. It borders China and Russia to the North, and to the South there is a 4km wide impenetrable border with South Korea. The counrty follows its own communist ideals, a strict philosophy known as the Juche Idea wrapped around the worship of the kim Dynasty - Kim II Sung, their Eternal President who died in 1994 but temains Head of State, and his son  ans successor, Kim Jong II, known as the General.

THE MATADOR

Starring Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear

Opens the 20th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival

Danny (Greg Kinnear) is a straight-laced traveling salesman whose last hope for financial security rests on closing a big deal in Mexico City. While trying to unwind in a hotel bar, he meets Julian (Pierce Brosnan), a quirky fellow foreigner who quickly becomes emotionally attached to Danny. Danny initially is scared off by Julian's brashness and odd tendencies, but is eventually won over by his sincere efforts to develop a friendship. Among Julian's gestures is to invite Danny to a bullfight, where--inspired by the bravado of the sport and the spirit of male bonding--Julian reveals to Danny that he is a "facilitator of fatalities."

"The Matador" plays off of Brosnan's James Bond persona to clever ironic effect. Fearless of looking absolutely ridiculous, Brosnan has traded in Bond's designer tuxedos for a Speedo and cowboy boots, perfectly embodying his hitman on the verge of a nervous breakdown. As the levelheaded businessman with emotional issues of his own, Kinnear's Danny complements Brosnan's eccentricity.
