Humpday  is a 2009 American comedy film starring Mark Duplass, Joshua Leonard, and Alycia Delmore; and directed, produced, and written by Lynn Shelton. It premiered at the 2009 Sundance film festival. International distribution rights have been purchased by Magnolia Pictures for a mid-six figure sum. The film opened in New York City on a limited released on July 10, 2009.

Imagine your life is somewhat complete with a house, job, and wife but then your best friend from college comes knocking at your door at 2 AM.   During a pot-induced hedonistic party, a plan is hatched between the two friends to create an Art Film of “two really straight men having sex.”   If they only knew how much this would affect all of their lives.

Hump Day is set over the course of a couple of days in a sleepy suburb of Seattle, WA and is focused on the lives of Ben (Mark Duplass) and his wife Anna (Alycia Delmore).  Happily married they drift to sleep one night until Andrew (Joshua Leonard) comes around.  Now, even after only just reading the movie poster, you know that this movie is about two straight guys who are going to have sex.  As a voyeur, you will see a Slice of Life Movie and will be wondering WHEN WILL THIS HAPPEN?  There are two things that make this movie interesting.  First, the proverbial Fourth Wall is almost non-existent and you feel like you are right there with the characters—which are now your friends.  Second, fans of HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” will definitely feel like the director is a big fan of Larry David’s what could happen next scenarios and general mischief.  With the Fourth Wall gone you can see the true antics of these two guys from a perspective not normally seen major motion pictures.

This is, by far, not a gay movie.  This movie has real life straight people in a very awkward situation.  Film buffs of any sexual orientation will find this an interesting watch with enough fun for anyone.   What is funny and interesting to discover is that though they were both really high when the plan was hatched, both men have strong separate reasons for wanting to do this film. Hump Day will divulge personal secrets through confessions that are raw and sensitive.  This movie will be perfect for those Generation Yers who are about 3-5 years out of college who are questioning life and their own personal existence.  Not only did the Fourth Wall come down with this movie, you feel like this is actually happening, that this is someone’s life and you are right there experiencing everything first hand with them.  You will feel that this movie was pretty much completed over the course of a weekend at someone’s real house and just the minimal amount of staff around.  There are really long diatribes that are completely seamless and leave you feeling like it was done all in One Take.  The Director Lynn Shelton, who won an award at the 2009 Sundance Festival, actually plays the bisexual hippie chick.  Not only did Lynn direct but also wrote it as well and you will wonder what has happened in her real life.

Hump Day will bring you to a place you do not know and into the lives of people you have never met.  You will feel for them, tear up for them, and realize you are just as messed up and confused as they are.
