From a
very early age we are told lies about what the true nature of our actions
towards the people we like means. If someone hits you or pulls your braids, Its’
because that person really likes you. At what point do the lies stop, the truth
come out, and people start listening and saying what they really mean?
From the
very first moment that Oprah had Marc Silverstein started talking about this
book he just finished,
He's
Just Not
That
Into You I knew he was
onto something big. The book was created out of a need to explain the Male
Psyche and give the exact tell-tale signs that females may misconstrue to give
an honest account of what is going on and what will actually happen. After
working with Drew Barrymore on Never Been Kissed and other
female-orientated movies, as a token guy he kept getting asked “Why?” He then
decided to put all his wisdom into a book. A book that sold out for months.
Morphing
the book into a workable and believable screenplay seemed like it must have
effortless and fun to do at the same time. The cast consists of nine people,
five women and four men who all live in Baltimore, but have Six Degrees of
Separation from each other. Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin) works with Beth (Jennifer
Aniston) and Janine (Jennifer Connelly) who bought a house from Connor (Kevin
Connolly) who places ads with Mary (Drew Barrymore) but has never met. Anna
(Scarlet Johansson) falls for married Ben (Bradley Cooper) who is best friends
with Neil (Ben Affleck) who is with Jennifer Aniston. The movie revolves around
the friendship between Gigi and Alex (Justin Long) who, as a bartender, is more
insightful and honest about mens true intentions than any Harvard PhD.
Throughout the movie it gives you not only the truth about what really happens
on dates but also a play-by-play description of what goes on on both sides.
What people say is not always what they mean and when confronted you become The
Psycho.
This
movie will definitely be enjoyed by those out there in the dating scene as well
as those in relationships that have to deal with their collective Ups and
Downs. Though this movie is written for and targeted to heterosexuals, gays
will enjoy the messages and advice given as well as hot and sweet performances
by eye
candy Ben Affleck and Bradley Cooper. On the flip side, as gay men, we all
get asked advice questions and now we have honest answers for our Sisters in Woe
(as well as ourselves). One of the disappointing things about this movie is
that there was not enough attention on Drew Barrymore! Almost reclaiming her
“Josie Grossie” character from Never Been Kissed, this hapless little
bunny needed more screen time to develop her character and those of her BFFs.
Actually, one the best new terms for Gay Friendly was coined “Gay Adjacent” by
Connor who, as a straight real estate agent realizes the power of The Gay Dollar
and Advice.
is definitely a movie that is targeted to the John Waters’
audience and genre of movies; teen angst now in it's thirties. This
explores not only the problems of face-to-face communication but has a
priceless moment when Drew Barrymore has a breakdown over cell to home
messages, MySpace-ing, texting, email and Snail Mail, and how hard it is
now to compete against technology. This movie you will find heart,
lies, compassion, commitment, and infidelity but most of all—honesty and
hope. You want to be The Exception and be eventually one of the Ones
That Makes It with someone you care about and hopefully not just their
Plan B.
