3 Sentence Synopsis: |
|
A
young Gay zombie named
Otto appears on a remote German highway and hitches a ride to Berlin where he
explores the city. Otto is discovered by a filmmaker who makes a
documentary about his life with the support of her girlfriend, Hella Bent, who
is (coincidentally) making an epic political porno-zombie movie called "Up With
Dead People".
When
Otto discovers that there is a wallet in his back pocket that contains
information about his past, before he was dead, he remembers a few
details, including memories of his ex-boyfriend, Rudolf and he arranges to meet
him at the schoolyard where they met and the result is... devastating. |

Otto; Or Up With Dead People, billed as the first Gay
Zombie Movie ever made, is without doubt one of the most
entertaining and completely off the wall independent LGBT films
made in recent years.
Before we begin, I have to tell you that I have not seen a
Zombie film since watching them as a kid in my best friends
basement on Channel 50 in Detroit. The
Saturday morning
shows were hosted by Elvira and realistically, I never thought I
would see another one. Yet, here I was, caught up in a Zombie
story, just like back in the day.
Anyway, how do you describe a film where the main character
interacts with the dead and the living? How do you explain a
film where one of the characters is a flickering, captioned,
silent film star that occasionally makes appearances along with
Otto and somehow exists in today's world? What would you think
if I told you the dead cast is a group of hot guys covered in
fresh and dried blood, with bloodshot eyes and their entrails
hanging out? What if I told you parts of the movie were beyond
pornographic and that watching the sex was like looking at fresh
steamy Alligator Alley roadkill in headlights on Sunday morning?
Would you go see Otto?
For
those of you that said yes, I assure you, this is the must-see
movie of the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival!
Director and writer
Bruce LaBruce
covers all of the bases. From a story line that unsuspectingly
draws you more and more into a Zombie flick, to blood and gore
that gross you out until you cover your eyes and squeal like
that little kid when you were watching channel 50 in the
basement, you just can't take your eyes off Otto; Or Up With
Dead People. What will happen next? Oh yeah! A Zombie sex orgie!
The cinematography was fantastic and the special effect of
the silent film star magically appearing from time to was truly
very well done, co
mpletely
intriguing and quite frankly, fierce! The actors, which include
the cute as a bugs ear,
Jey Crisfar
as Otto, hunky
Guido Sommer
as Adolf, and the beautiful
Christopher Chemin
as Maximillian alongside gorgeous girls like
Suzanne Sachsse
as filmmaker Hella Bent and
Katherina
Klewinghaus, who plays Media Yarn, Hella's
girlfriend, all perform spectacularly.
We could delve into the underlying symbolism and try and
explain why the silent film star is such an important aspect of
the movie, but lets just say that the main thing you will
discover through seeing Otto is that the movie is a metaphor of
life in the modern Western world. Are our human relationships
really this sloppy or do we just make them that way? Is there a
life worth living that's only found after death?
If you are a fan of films by
Peter Greenaway
like The cook,
the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover and
A Zed and Two
Naughts, I assure you, this is the film for you. You
will undoubtedly be intrigued from beginning to end and enjoy
spending endless amounts of time pondering what this is really
all about.
Mark's List highly recommends Otto; Or Up With Dead People.
