Don't Bother **(Two Stars) |
|
|
This film is
a remake of the 1973 film bearing the same title. The
movie, billed as "horror", did not scare or startle me - not
even once. As a fan of physiological thrillers, I'll have
you know I was less than thrilled. That is of course unless
you count the flashbacks to the traumatic events that all
heroes in horror films face - those were actually kinda
cool. During the opening credits we find Detective Edward
Malus (Nicolas
Cage), who plays a highway patroller, aiding a
woman curbside who's daughter dropped her toy doll from the
backseat window. In only a moments time an 18 wheeler comes
along and in it's attempts to dodge Malus hits the car
killing both the woman and her daughter. |
|
This film definitely has an
underlying theme of "girl power" which we discover when we
are taken to the land of Summersile, a private and very much
socially backwards island where the men are uneducated and
the only reason they even exist is to handle the manual
labor and for the mere purpose of procreation. |
|
If you are not a
Nicolas Cage fan, this
movie will be painful to watch for he is not the greatest
actor. However, if you let yourself get into the movie the
rest of the actors are pretty good, and there are a few
heavy weights like
Ellen Burstyn who plays
the queen bee Sister Summersisle, the very lovely and yet
deathly skinny
Kate Beahan (sister
Willow),
Leelee Sobieski (Sister
Honey) and
Frances Conroy (Dr Moss
who is most famous in the gay community for playing the mom
on TV's
Six Feet Under.)
I also will say that the plot is very intricate and complex
and you will be shocked in the end when the real story is
revealed. |
|
The most interesting thing to
me was when
Nicolas Cage came
barging onto the island asking questions and throwing his
weight around as a police officer in a land that knows no
law. It was quite humorous actually. Maybe his acting
wasn't so bad after-all come to think of it - I think we've
all met a few cops like that in our day. |
|
I was truly let down by this
movie and would not suggest it to anyone, unless you are a
huge fan of any of the actors. |

The
Wicker Man
Suspense/Thriller. In Neil LaBute's remake of the 1973
horror classic, Nicolas Cage stars as a sheriff
investigating a young girl's disappearance from an isolated,
mysterious island off the coast of Maine. As he digs deeper
and uncovers evidence of disturbing pagan rituals, he
realizes there's something very strange about the local
community. 1 hour, 42 min. MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for
disturbing images and violence, language and thematic
issues).
