UMM It was Good ***(Three Stars)

This is a fun underdog movie full of incredible stunts and brilliant routines, even from the very beginning with an amazing bike stunt that lands the rebellious and disturbed Haley Graham (Missy Peregrym) in the court room.  YES, the plot line is cliché talented kid goes bad, and turns against parents, teachers, the law etc.  Yet someone recognizes a natural talent in them and forces them to focus their energy and ability on that talent on that sport and while doing their obligatory time they also find themselves and learn to find an inner peace and somehow make the world right, maybe even a better place.

This films primary focus is on that girl, the back talking smart ass girl Haley (Missy Peregrym.)  She was truly conflicted and was brilliant and believable even if she may be a bit too old for the role.  After walking out on national championships, she lost the trust of everyone she knows, not to mention she let a lot of people down, and carrying around those burdens and feeling the weight of the world makes her quite miserable with conflicting emotions, but on the flip side she was beautiful and also quite capable of being a beautiful and loving person as well.
I'm not sure but I think they hired gymnasts for this movie and for I think most the actresses did their own stunts, and they were quite amazing.  My favorite supporting actress was Joanne (Vanessa Lengies) she was a total air head and while living and breathing gymnastics she was robbed not only a childhood but also an education, for she desperately tried to use big words that didn't even exist.  It was cute, and yet you could really see her loneliness speaking loud and clear.  It shows a glimpse of what its like behind the scenes of a gymnast, and the stress of competition.
My favorite scene is when Haley's guy friends come to kidnap the girls and they go to the mall to try on dresses etc and are doing back flips in prom dresses, loved it.  But more fun than that is when one of the guys gets a make-over at the smash box counter and is in drag while the other is wearing the prom dress and talking about shaving his armpits for prom.  It was  true metro sexual moment -- borderline homo erotic moment.
Halfway through he film I felt it went from being an adolescent movie where girls struggle with peer acceptance and thriving to excel at a sport, then it became a political movie about sticking it to the system and how the rules and regulations for gymnastics not only suck but are just plane ridiculous.  When push comes to shove they can succeed through organized rebellion.

This movie was fun, and the target market is obviously (13-20) it will also be enjoyed by anyone who likes gymnastics.  However it will be a short lived in the theatres, but I have a feeling it will have a big afterlife on the DVD circuit.  It's sad to say, but most all of the good parts were in the preview.  If you are going to see this movie, do not get your hopes up, you might be disappointed as well.

Stick It   Stick It

Comedy. A teenage ex-gymnastics star with big family problems finds herself on the wrong side of the law after one-too many arrests. Forced back into the regimented world of gymnastics to clean up her act, she rediscovers her love of the sport and gets the chance to make peace with her dysfunctional life. Empowered by her transformation, she rallies fellow gymnasts to protest and outsmart outdated scoring methods at the National Championships. Jeff Bridges stars as the coach. 105 minutes. MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for some crude remarks).
