Imagine being 30,000 feet in the sky trapped inside a metal
tube and then realizing that there are hundreds and hundreds
of extremely rare, poisonous and vicious snakes on board who
will eventually try to brutally destroy you. To
make matters worse, there are so many different kinds of
snakes that once you are bitten if you don't know what
species bit you, you may die due to the injection of the
wrong anti-venom. This is a real and legitimate fear that
affects everyone, even me. For a few hours after the movie
ended I was still jumpy and easily startled at sudden
movements. |

Needless to say, this journey will have you strapped
down to your seats and take you through a series of many
entertaining and truly shocking moments. Some of which will
most definitely make you scream out loud.
Snakes on a Plane puts
a new twist on horror films and physiological thrillers and
I was actually impressed with how long the film was able to
keep you on the edge of your seat. |

The movie started off kinda funny, as if it were going
to be a comedy, especially because of characters
like the silly pilot - played by David
Koechner. However, don't get too
comfortable, for even though the storyline is designed
to make you feel comfortable, you will not be there for
long. The film quickly jumps right into the action when
the timer to release all the snakes is set for 20 min
after the plane takes off. I must say it was also very
comedic when they went into the very diverse and equally
bizarre first class passengers who are forced to sit in
coach due to the FBI protecting the crucial witness for
an important trial in First Class. Let's see, we have
the air head heiress, Mercedes played by
Rachel Blanchard,
complete with her little fashion accessory puppy. Then
we have Three G's, played by
Flex Alexander,
a national recording artist who is all inclusive with
his germ-a-phobic ways, not to mention his social
anxiety. Like any famous rapper, he is of course
accompanied by his posse. To stir the pot with a little
more flavor, we have Paul, played by
Gerard Plunkett, a
European who is completely over Americans and just
bitter in general. (...especially about his obvious hair
plugs) To be honest, the acting was a disappointment in
most of the scenes and in fact some of it was just so
horrible it was funny. Then again, the focus in this
film was not on the actor's ability to play these
characters but more so on the horror. |

On a more personal note, I’m not sure if I was offended as a
homosexual by the super queeny male flight attendant, and I
say this for two reasons; on one hand, I am offended because
he was obviously played by a straight male playing out the
cliché gay tendencies of every male flight attendant to
date, but doing them with an obvious awkwardness was truly
annoying. That and they felt the need to make him straight
again in the last scene, as if all of his gayness was
portrayed in vain. I say that I'm not sure if I was offended
because part of me is glad that being gay is so mainstream
now that there is a man with those tendencies in a feature
film such as this, yet I'm still frustrated they felt they
had to make him straight in the end for box office safety.
My favorite line from the supposed gay guy in this movie is
"Who's your daddy now bitch!?" as he shoves a snake into a
microwave. |

This movie is very true to the typical horror genre in
that it is full of senseless and brutal violence, and be
scared for you will in fact be cinematically attacked by
these killer snakes. Yes, it was totally a bit cheesy
at times, yet the fact that they went back and rewrote
the script to make it an R rating after shooting was
finished I feel helped make the movie a bit
more effective. For example, the first snake bite was
to a huge breasted naked lady's nipple. Not so Pg-13,
right? |

To be perfectly honest, I was reluctant to see this film
for I could not imagine there even being a cute scene.
I just remember thinking "umm... oh god, how dumb does
this movie look?" But can I just tell you that it was
amazing and that I think it will be a summer favorite
and talked about for years to come? I also love the
cute twist at the very end of the movie - so keep an eye
out. In closing, this movie is a perfect example as to
why we go to see films, it takes your mind off whatever
is currently bothering you, and for that I say mission
accomplished!!! |
