PASS ** (Two Stars) |

Bobby was a
well intentioned miss. I'm not going to totally trash this
movie because it really tries to be a touching film about
our history and the assassination of Robert Kennedy (little
brother of the late and also assassinated President of the
United States John F. Kennedy). This is a detailed journey
into the day his assassination happened. |
|
This film had Emilio
Estevez's name all over it. He wrote, directed
and starred in the movie. This is a story that he has spent
7 years developing. The most impressive aspect of his
directing was the fact he was able to incorporate actual
footage of Bobby Kennedy throughout the entire film. Each
and every time we saw him it was indeed actually him.

|
I also liked the all star
cast; possibly the biggest to go see the film is its 22 well
known A and B list characters. It had everybody from young
up and coming stars like:
Elijah Wood (the groom
William),
Lindsay Lohan (the
bride Diane),
Nick Cannon (Campaign
supporter Dwayne),
Joshua Jackson
(Campaign supporter Wade),
Heather Graham (Hotel
Operator Angela),
Ashton Kutcher (Drug
Dealer Fisher),
Freddy Rodríguez (Bus
Boy Jose) to the older more accomplished and appreciated
stars like:
Anthony Hopkins
(Retired hotel employee John Casey),
Sharon Stone (Hairdresser
Miriam),
Laurence Fishburne (Chef
Edward Robinson), Martin
Sheen (Husband Jack),
Helen Hunt (Wife
Samantha),
Harry Belafonte (Retired
hotel employee Nelson),
Christian Slater
(Kitchen manager Timmons),
Demi Moore (Singer
Virginia Fallon),
William H. Macy (Hotel
Manager Paul). The characters they play have such small
parts in the life of Bobby Kennedy that we only really get
to know them by their role in the film and not by their
name. |
|
I have to also tell you that
the extremely large all star studded cast is also the films
biggest weakness. This would be most impressive in a novel,
however in a film it was distracting. They were so focused
on have having many different storylines, and keeping up
with so many people that you never really got to know any of
them completely. The most irritating thing about this is
that even though they are in the same hotel, at the same
time, they never interacted with each other and many of
these storylines could have been cut to make the story much
shorter, and more palatable. |
|
Side Note -- Bobby was
actually filmed on location of the Ambassador Hotel as it
was being knocked down. |
|
I will admit that I enjoyed
the phenomenal cast, but I was almost bored to tears by this
film as a whole. Like all historical films we know what is
going to happen in the end, and I see no need in taking us
the longest way possible to get there, even if it
incorporates huge stars.

There are
definitely two good reasons to go see this movie. First
and foremost if you are infatuated with the Kennedy
Curse, and second if you are compelled or driven by
historical events, then this is a must see film for
you. In fact this will one day be every students
favorite two day history class in High School, We all
loved movie day.

Bobby
Political Drama. A re-telling of the assassination of
Senator Robert F. Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel in 1968.
The film follows 22 individuals who are all at the hotel for
different purposes but share the common thread of
anticipating Kennedy's arrival at the primary election night
party, which would change their lives forever. This historic
night is set against the backdrop of the cultural issues
gripping the country at the time, including racism, sexual
inequality and class differences. A star-studded cast
includes: Anthony Hopkins, Demi Moore, Christian Slater,
William H. Macy, Lawrence Fishburne, and Elijah Wood. Emilio
Estevez directs. 1 hour, 51 minutes. MPAA Rating: R (for
language, drug content, and a scene of violence).
