We dined at Cityfish on a Saturday night in early
October. For those of you from outside of Florida, what you need to know
is that October and November are the perfect months for outdoor dining
in Central Florida. Unfortunately we arrived late enough that all of the
tables outside along Central Boulevard and we ended up at an oversized
very comfortable booth inside.
Our waiter was immediately at the table and our
drinks were delivered before we had time to contemplate the many choices
on the menu. There was also a selection of fresh fish to mull over. We
had heard that Cityfish is known as the place to get the best Lobster
Roll outside of Maine. Unfortunately neither of us was in the mood for
lobster, but we did get started with a couple of awesome appetizers. My
dining partner claimed to be a Clam Chowder snob and thought it would be
a good idea to see how the Cityfish version measured up. I on the other
hand, wanted to try their twist on something I crave from time to time,
warm Artichoke Dip and chips. Here’s the deal, Cityfish makes the dip
with Blue Crab which made an incredible flavor combination that we
gobbled up about as fast as anyone has ever eaten anything. The snob was
also completely impressed with the Clam Chowder and so we were off to a
great start.
Just about the time that we were finished licking
our bowls (it was that good) the entrees were delivered. Stephen had
ordered the Seafood Paella made with chicken, shrimp, clams, scallops,
mussels, sausage and rice with an annato broth. A few years ago I had a
fish sandwich at B. O.’s Fish Wagon in Key West that I have always
considered to be the best fish sandwich ever and so I thought I would
try the Cityfish version. Cityfish offers three versions, grilled, fried
or Cajun and serves it with lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce on a
toasted roll with Cole Slaw and Old Bay Fries. Wanting to compare it to
my best ever, I opted for the fried sandwich. Stephen enjoyed his Paella
so much that he had a conversation with the waiter about it. In my
opinion, if you don’t have time to go to Key West for lunch or dinner
and you happen to be in Orlando, this is right up there with the best
fish sandwich ever. However, let it be said that B. O.’s makes a Key
Lime tartar sauce that inches them over the top. The Tartar sauce at
Cityfish is described as traditional, but I found it to be much better
than most, not as acidic tasting as some that I have had.
So by now you know, we loved the food and highly
recommend Cityfish. What you don’t know is that we also loved the
service. Unfortunately I did not get our waiters name, but in addition
to all of the normal requirements like prompt attention and bottomless
glasses of soft drinks, he was friendly and conversational without being
annoying. He actually was interested in doing a great job and the entire
experience was first rate because of what he added to mix.
