Over a Decade of Aqua Girl
Aqua Girl traces its
beginnings to the
year 1999. That
year, Alison Burgos
and NYC’s legendary
women’s producer,
Shescape, gathered a
committee of
like-minded women
from around South
Florida to produce
an exciting
one-night event to
benefit breast
cancer. The event
raised
over $15,000 for two
local breast cancer
organizations,
Cancer Link and
Gilda’s Club. In
2000 it into an entire
weekend of events
and Aqua Girl was
born. The goal was
to create a dynamic
national fundraising
weekend celebrating
women and the issues
that effect them.
Women descended on
Miami from all over
the world, and the
first year of this
spectacular weekend
of events was a huge
success. This year's
Aqua Girl events
take place beginning

About Gay and
Lesbian Miami and Miami Beach (SoBe), Florida
Miami Beach has been one of
America's pre-eminent beach
resorts for almost a century.
The beach, now commonly referred
to as SoBe or South Beach has
been a gay destination since the
late 1980's when iconic
nightclubs like Warsaw, Paragon
and Salvation ruled the scene.
While these bars are gone, a
bevy of new and many would say
better establishments have
replaced them (Miami
and Miami Beach bars).
Miami and Miami Beach are home
to several of the World's
largest annual LGBT events. In
fact, the city is host to more
world renowned Gay and Lesbian
parties than any other city on
earth. In early March look for
the week long
Winter Party Festival with
it's main event on Miami Beach.
Next up is
Aqua Girl, a lesbian circuit
event in mid-May, followed by
Sizzle, an event for black
men and their admirers that
takes place on Memorial Day
Weekend.
Sizzle Her has also gained
in popularity in recent years,
and now provides black women a
weekend all their own. The year
is wrapped up with the world
famous
White Party Week, a
benefit for Care Resource.
The
Miami Gay and Lesbian Film
Festival includes several
parties and typically showcases
over 50 foreign and independent
films. In it's second year,
Miami Beach Gay Pride (view
Mark's List Video) has
grown into a major festival
including a spectacular parade
and expo on the scenic Ocean
Drive along with an ever
increasing number of circuit
style nightclub events in the
beach's major
clubs.
In 1979 Miami Beach's Art Deco
Historic District was listed on
the National Register of
Historic Places. The Art Deco
District is the largest
collection of Art Deco
architecture in the world and
comprises hundreds of
hotels,
apartments and other structures
erected between 1923 and 1943.
Mediterranean, Streamline Moderne and Art Deco are all
represented in the District.
South Beach (also known as SoBe,
or simply The Beach), comprises
the area from 1st street to
about 25th street and is the
most popular area of Miami
Beach. Topless sunbathing is
tolerated on certain designated
areas of the beach. Before the
TV show Miami Vice helped make
the area popular, SoBe was under
urban blight, with vacant
buildings and a high crime rate.
Today, it is considered one of
the richest commercial areas in
Florida, home to designer
boutiques and larger stores like
Barney's CoOp and Macy's.
Lincoln Road is a nationally
known spot for great outdoor
dining, bicycling, rollerblading
and shopping.
The New World Symphony
Orchestra, one of America's
leading orchestral institutions
is based in Miami Beach,
Florida, under the direction of
Michael Tilson Thomas. The
orchestra has a new home under
construction that was designed
by the internationally renowned
Frank Gehry.
The Beach also includes many
other cultural venues including
the Lincoln, Fillmore,
Jackie Gleason and Colony
theaters. There is a small
botanical garden, the Holocaust
Memorial and several museums
including the Bass Museum, Wolfsonian, and the fabulous
World Erotic Art Museum. Each
year, the first weekend in
December thousands of art lover
from all over the world flock to
Miami Beach for teh annual Art
Basel.
Legendary Miami Royalty, Gloria & Emilio Estefan and Real Housewives Miami, Marysol Patton hung out at Score Nightclub's Filthy Gorgeous Fridays on Miami Beach's famous Lincoln Road Mall.
