BY BOB KECSKEMETY
After working 14 years for other people in their
South Florida
clubs mostly on South
Beach, Anthony Diaz decided to open his own
establishment.
Club Oz and Cozmos Lounge,
2674 E. Oakland Park Blvd., are the
culmination of years of preparation and training. Having worked at
Twist, Cactus, Score, Frankie and Johnny’s and others on South Beach and
the Boardwalk in Fort Lauderdale, Diaz is now ready to make his own mark
on South Florida’s nightlife. Diaz is offering a
unique concept of two separate clubs in one. He also stresses that he
wants the club to be 100 percent drug-free.
“I want to keep the establishment clean; the
neighborhood clean,” Diaz said.
He has also been very busy. Diaz just obtained the
club in January and started work last month and has already had a soft
opening while technicians are installing the new state-of-the-art
lighting system. The clubs have a full kitchen and will be offering food
service and there will be valet parking available.
Club Oz will be a dance club with a gay night on
Saturdays. “Though it’s going to be mostly straight,” said Diaz,
“everyone who comes to the door is welcome.” He explains that the music
format will be open with a mix of dance, house, some hip-hop, Latin and
reggae.
The Cozmos Lounge will be a piano bar from
5 to 9 p.m. After 9, Cozmos turns into a male dance
bar but he stresses that while other stripper bars might have 25 or more
different dancers a night, he plans to feature eight to 10 dancers to
provide better entertainment to the patrons of the lounge. Also, instead
of featuring all local talent, he plans to have a couple of regular
house dancers but will bring in the majority of the dancers from other
areas of the country. He feels that importing dancers weekly will help
keep the entertainment fresh but any dancer that becomes particularly
popular with the customers will be brought back on a regular basis. A
variety of different events are being planned and there will be nightly
drink specials.
Diaz mostly credits Score nightclub in
Miami Beach’s owner Billy Kemp and Fabricio with
giving him the necessary experience, training, confidence and knowledge
to be able to open his own venue. “I’ve learned so much from them in the
four years I was at Score. It’s because of them I‘ve been successful in
this field. They took me under their wings and showed me the ropes.”
Club Oz and the Cozmos Lounge will have its grand
opening on March 18.
