Summer’s Gettin’ Hot, Try a Menu That’s Even Hotter!
Colorado is definitely known for it’s plethora of
Mexican restaurants, but one in particular is standing out
with its new sizzlin’ summer menu. The Blue Bonnet
Mexican Cafe in
Denver has been family owned for over
45 years and has even received recognition from big names
such as The New York Times, House Beautiful, and British
Airways Magazine. Owner Gary Mobell strives to provide a
welcoming environment in this cute cafe located on South
Broadway. The large covered patio is perfect in the bright
summer and is lined beautifully with blooming flowers of all
sorts.
As if the ambiance of the outdoor dining area
didn’t already make this place fantastic, the drinks and
appetizers continued to elevate the experience. We started
off with Peach Mojitos. The unconventional twist of fresh
peach flavor to this classic summer drink proved to be sweet
and flavorsome. Be sure to order a glass of water or two
with the appetizers because they are packed with a kick!
Everything is homemade, so I knew I was in good hands when I
tried the chips, salsa, and fresh guacamole to start off.
Next we had the Mahi Mahi Ceviche which consisted of Mahi
Mahi marinated in lime juice, tomatoes, jalapenos, peppers,
onions, cucumbers, and cilantro. The different elements sent
my taste buds on a journey. Just as I thought it couldn’t
get any better, they brought out the gazpacho. This classic
Mexican chilled soup shares similar elements as the cheiche
with tomatoes and cucumbers, but it also has avocados,
chiles, and limes that fuse together flawlessly.
Before we ordered our entrées, we had to try the sangria.
The mixture of red wine, brandy, and freshly cut fruit
proved to be the ideal beverage on the hot summer day. The
playa mango salad was served in a family style large sharing
size. The chile-lime chicken, mangos, red peppers, black
beans, and scallions were served on a bed of fresh greens
and housed in a large tortilla bowl. Both the
mango/pineapple vinaigrette and the salsa ranch are amazing
dressings to top this sweet salad. The main course arrived
soon after. We chose a taco dinner which consisted of tinga
and roasted veggie tacos, as well as a side of rice, black
beans, lettuce, and tomatoes. The tinga taco is a white corn
tortilla stuffed with shredded chicken, onions, chipotle
garlic, and it was topped with cilantro and cabbage. The
roasted veggie taco is perfect for the non-meat eater and is
made up of a white corn tortilla packed with roasted
veggies, a black bean blend, and drizzled with sweet
pineapple salsa.
With the sangria still flowing, we
ordered dessert! The Blue Bonnet Cafe offers sinfully good
sopapillas. These mini sopapillas are made fresh so they
arrive at the table still warm. They are sprinkled with
cinnamon sugar and have caramel and honey dripped on top.
And let’s not forget the whipped cream. To. Die. For.
This cafe is such a great place for the community of
Denver to come and enjoy great food, drinks, and outdoor
scenery. Also, check out the brunch menu on Saturdays and
Sundays from 11am-2pm. The Happy Hour is killer with $1.99
apps, as well as margaritas starting at $3.50 from 4pm-6pm Monday
through Friday. Venture out from the chain restaurant
mentality and try something new. Try the Blue Bonnet Cafe. |
