Mixing Business with DJ Rockstar Aaron |
|
|
by Joe Young
DJ Rockstar Aaron is well known for his distinct fashion and
sense of style nearly as much as his role as one of
Denver's beloved DJs. As a decade-long
resident of the Mile High City originally from Jacksonville, FL,
he brings with him a dynamic personality, charisma, and love of
music that Denverites have come to embrace. His Friday Night
dance party, “Female Trouble”, was awarded Best Female Friendly
Club Night 2011 by Westword Denver and he was named Outstanding
DJ by Out Front Colorado in 2010. In addition to his weekly
gigs, he also works private parties, weddings, and corporate
events. If he can fit it into his schedule, he’s always up to
the job. He considers himself to be an open format DJ, playing
everything from 70’s classics to today’s Top 40 Dance hits. This
allows him the versatility to entertain at nearly any event. If
you haven’t yet heard of DJ Rockstar Aaron, make your way to one
of his featured events!
What inspired your DJ name “DJ Rockstar Aaron”?
It was kind of a joke. I don’t really take myself seriously and
consider myself a Rockstar. Someone in a band called me that
once and it stuck.
You have a very captivating look and sense of style. How
did that come about?
I would always dress up and experiment with theatrical makeup. I
love changing up my look. As far as my outfits go, I work with a
local designer named Francis Roces. I usually come up with an
idea for an outfit and we go to the fabric store and spend about
an hour shopping for the perfect fabric. He puts it all together
for me. I also take a camera with me so I can see how the fabric
looks on camera. It also helps to have Norman Dillon as my
photographer. He’s one of the best and knows how to make my
image shine.
How long have you been DJ’ing and what got you started?
Originally I started DJ’ing on the radio. When I moved to
Denver, I worked for a satellite County Radio network. I started
going out a lot because I enjoyed it. I wanted to work in a
nightclub and I really just wanted to get paid to hang out, but
unless I went on a reality TV show, that wasn’t going to happen,
so I decided to start DJ’ing and things sort of took off.
Are there any DJs or Producers whose work you admire?
I LOVE anything by David Guetta. I am not one to play mashups
but “DJs From Mars” are amazing! Their stuff goes really hard
but you can play it in the smallest room and it works. I travel
a lot and hear DJs in other markets and Denver definitely has
some of the best.
What is your favorite song to play right now?
I really like David Guetta feat. Taio Cruz & Ludacris – “Little
Bad Girl”
What do you enjoy most about the music scene in Denver?
Aside from being a DJ, I am such a fan of music. The amount of
live music venues in Denver always amazes me. It’s the reason I
moved here. Before I lived here, I would always travel to other
cities to see my favorite bands. Now all my favorite bands and
singers come to Denver (except for Britney Spears... she skipped
Denver!). I love DJ’ing at live shows. I just opened up for Devo
at the Denver County Fair and it’s great to play music for so
many people while they are waiting for a band to come on. I
would really like to be an opening DJ at more live shows. I
personally enjoy having a live DJ at a concert versus canned
house music.
What is an interesting fact about you that people might
find intriguing and/or surprising?
I am a workaholic. I have nearly every day for the next few
months planned out. The things that go on behind the scenes is a
lot of work. Between DJ’ing and managing the business side, I
work about 60 hours a week. I wake up every day at 9am and
research music, deal with booking inquiries, and other business
matters that most people don’t think about. The DJ part is easy;
it’s the daytime work that can be challenging.
