South Florida Blade: The deputy
director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management told a
Senate hearing Wednesday that his agency opposes legislation
that would provide domestic partners of gay federal employees the
same benefits available to spouses of straight employees.

Oh La La Mag: If you don’t know
celeb photographer Mike Ruiz, you will soon. This fall, he
will be appearing as a judge on two national TV shows: RuPaul's
Drag Race and Americas Next Top Model. The former model
has made a name for himself behind the lens shooting stars like
Kirsten Dunst, Vanessa Williams and Lindsay Lohan. Most
recently, he shot Kathy Griffin for the next season of her show, My
Life on the D-List, and Mario Lopez for his hosting gig on
TV’s entertainment news show, Extra!

Queerty: This [RNC source] tells Ian Halperin, an investigative
reporter who previously exposed Scientology's homophobic history, that the RNC's
estrogen-heavy short list included Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
The hawkish, familiar and capable Rice seemed like be a good pick. Although she
wouldn't draw as many women as Clinton, nor as many blacks as Obama,
her placement could have skewed the numbers a little.

With Clay Aiken the latest celebrity to admit, "Yes, I'm
Gay!" on the cover of a national magazine, here's a look back at the
progression of celebrities' coming out covers through the ages. Note
the shift from Greg Louganis' sad, shameful, "My Private
Hell" cover in 1995 to the celebratory Aiken cover (and the others)
years later.

Village Voice, Michael
Musto: I've now had time to consider Palin's candidacy
with some thoughtfulness, and I still come up with two thumbs way
down my throat. I mean, Obama's ex-reverend is supposed to be
the problem in this campaign, but her church believes in
praying away the gays? She still thinks the war in Iraq has
something to do with 9/11? (Even Dubya got the memo that it
doesn't.) What's more, Palin thinks it's almighty God who's sent us
to war? (I guess she never got the fax about separation between
church and state either.) She detests abortion yet will gleefully
hunt animals from a helicopter? And she looks like a LensCrafters
commercial? Plus she never heard of the Bush Doctrine; Cindy
McCain doesn't seem to grasp Roe v. Wade; and her
hubby is fuzzy about Spain? Oy. This ticket has been basically
giving us a free trailer of a sequel that must be avoided at all
costs, even at a senior-citizens' discount!

Salon: Early
Wednesday night, a few hours before President Bush predicted
an economic nightmare on national TV, Joe Lieberman slipped
into the back of a room on the second floor of the Capitol to listen
to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve
chairman Ben Bernanke make their case to the Senate Democratic
caucus. For the Bush administration's financial crisis duo, it was
yet another contentious meeting with a skeptical Congress.
Congress Hits the Panic Button
Open Congress: The
focus in Congress right now is on passing some version of a massive,
taxpayer-funded bailout of the financial sector as quickly as
possible. In the past few days, several draft versions of different
bailout plans have been passed around Capitol Hill, but two in
particular have taken hold as lead competing proposals from which a
compromise is likely to ensue. See teh basics of the two plans here,

Paradise
(Algonquin, $25.95) is Ariel Sabar's
quest to reconcile present and past. As father and son travel together to
today's postwar Iraq to find what's left of Yona's birthplace, Ariel brings to
life the ancient town of Zakho, telling his family's story and discovering his
own role in this sweeping saga. What he finds in the Sephardic Jews'
millennia-long survival in Islamic lands is an improbable story of tolerance and
hope. Populated by Kurdish chieftains, trailblazing linguists, Arab nomads,
devout believers—marvelous characters all— this intimate yet powerful book
uncovers the vanished history of a place that is now at the very center of the
world's attention. 8pm

25, at 8 p.m. at Carol Morsani Hall. Regularly priced tickets
start at $28.50. To take advantage of this offer, call the TBPAC Ticket Office
at 813.229.STAR (7827). Hailed as "murderously funny!" by The New York Times, Margaret
Cho is one of the most prolific and critically acclaimed comedians of our time.
In the past eight years, she's successfully launched four national tours,
turning each into a concert film. In 1999, her groundbreaking one-woman show,
I'm The One That I Want,
became a best selling book and a concert film that grossed more per print than
any film in history. Her following tour, Notorious C.H.O., culminated in
a sold-out show at Carnegie Hall, and in 2004, the CD of her
Revolution tour was nominated for a Grammy®. A true entertainment pioneer,
Cho also created and starred in The Sensuous Woman, a live variety
show featuring vaudevillian burlesque and comedy, which she took for a
successful off-Broadway run last fall. Beautiful is Cho's first stand-up
tour in three years and is eagerly anticipated by fans. Visit
