  • South Florida Blade: A majority of the GLBT community is quick to dismiss the politics of the conservative party, saying Republicans work against our best interests.  As a result, their opinions are often ignored, with groups such as the Log Cabin Republicans ridiculed as “self-hating” because they side with those who denounce them.  In the gay community, much of the great steps forward towards social equality came from drastic efforts, from protests and lawsuits and public battles.  But changes can occur quietly, nevertheless pushing forward from the inside. • New York Times: Babu Pant likes to take advantage of the frequent delays at Nepal’s newly elected Constituent Assembly. As the only openly gay member, he takes every opportunity to work on his homophobic colleagues, trying to convince them that contrary to what they were taught growing up in this very conservative country, homosexuals are just like any other people. In Conservative Nepal, a Tribune for the ‘Third Gender’ Speaks Out
  • Lindsay Lohan (MySpace): I've been watching the news all morning, like everyone else - and I keep hearing about the issues related to 'teen pregnancy'- It's all related to Sarah Palin and her 17 year old unmarried pregnant daughter. Well, I think the real problem comes from the fact that we are taking the focus off of getting to know Sarah Palin and her political views, and what she can do to make our country a less destructive place. Its distracting from the real issues, the real everyday problems that this country experiences. LiLo gets All Political, Who Knew?
  • The Envelope: Nominees in major categories for tonight's 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards announced by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. 2008 Emmy scorecard
  • Us Magazine: The buzzed-about Sex and the City movie sequel isn't official. At Thursday's DVD party in NYC, she [Sarah Jessica Parker] said, "It’s all about the story. If we can’t tell a story that’s really worthy of an audience, then we won't do it. What Sarah Jessica Parker Says About the Sex and the City Sequel

  • Salon: Here is the current draft for the latest plan [the Financial System Bailout]. It's elegantly simple. The three key provisions: (1) The Treasury Secretary is authorized to buy up to $700 billion of any mortgage-related assets (so he can just transfer that amount to any corporations in exchange for their worthless or severely crippled "assets") [Sec. 6]; (2) The ceiling on the national debt is raised to $11.3 trillion to accommodate this scheme [Sec. 10]; and (3) best of all: "Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency" [Sec. 8]. Put another way, this authorizes Hank Paulson to transfer $700 billion of taxpayer money to private industry in his sole discretion, and nobody has the right or ability to review or challenge any decision he makes. Books & Books Coral Gables. Books Designed to take the reader on a visual trip – a sort of symphonic slide show – artist Bob Edelson’s Street Art Noir: Photo Imagery (BeatStreet Books, $20) evokes the rhythm and range of emotions of a "noir" film. The images are dark, urban, mysterious, sensual, at times frightening, all in a tongue-in-cheek, entertaining way. The images are based on street art photographed recently in American and West European cities. Though originally in full color, the images have been computer modified into high contrast black & white graphics, to increase their noir-ish impact.  Street art has never looked more exciting. 4pm arrowThe only Jewish family in a luxury Fifth Avenue building of WASPs, the senior Rothschilds took over the responsibility of raising their grandson, Matt, after his mother left him for Italy and a fourth husband. Matt secretly wore his grandmother’s dresses, shoplifted Barbies from FAO Schwarz, invented an imaginary midget butler who he addressed at dinner parties, and got kicked out of nearly every elite school in Manhattan—once for his impersonation of Judy Garland at a recital. He was eventually sent to a boarding school (his grandmother had to ransom off a van Gogh to get him in). In Dumbfounded (Crown, $23.95), Matt Rothschild—the man David Sedaris could have been if he’d grown up in an esteemed family on Manhattan’s Upper East Side—tells the story of his childhood with humor, honesty, and unlikely compassion for his eccentric relatives, including his mother, in this bitingly entertaining and unexpectedly tender memoir of family dysfunction. 6pm

Like Kathleen Norris's bestselling The Cloister Walk, Acedia & me: A Marriage, Monks, and a Writer’s Life (Riverhead, $25.95) is part memoir and part meditation. As in her bestselling Amazing Grace, here Norris explicates and demystifies a spiritual concept, exploring acedia through the geography of her life as a writer; her marriage and the challenges of commitment in the midst of grave illness; and her keen interest in the monastic tradition. Unlike her earlier books, this one features a poignant narrative throughout of Norris's and her husband's bouts with acedia and its clinical cousin, depression. Moreover, her analysis of acedia reveals its burden not just on individuals but on whole societies— and that the "restless boredom, frantic escapism, commitmentphobia, and enervating despair that we struggle with today are the ancient demon of acedia in modern dress." Presented in collaboration with Florida Center for the Literary Arts. 6pm
