Queerty:
We conclude that, in light of the history of pernicious
discrimination faced by gay men and lesbians, and because the
institution of marriage carries it it a status and significance that
the newly crated classification of civil unions does not embody, the
segregation of heterosexual and homosexual couples into separate
institutions constitutes a cognizable harm. We also conclude that
our state scheme discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation,
for the same reasons that classifications predicated on gender are
considered quasi-suspect for the purposes of the equal protection
provisions of the United States constitutions…

Gawker: As we
mentioned earlier [this week], it's all too possible that another
depression might be upon us. So how are to act, what are we to feel,
what songs are we to sing? To find some answers, we dove into
YouTube and (with some help from Metafilter) found 20
clips from 20 films about the Great Depression of the 1930's.
They just might provide valuable insights into what the future
holds. Watch and learn after the jump.

PageOneQ: Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern defended
earlier statements against gays and lesbians yesterday in a debate
with Democratic challenger Ron Marlett. In a heated
debated against Marlett Thursday, Kern, who is running for a third
term, defended her position against the “gay agenda,” and repeated
her statement that gays represent the biggest threat to the nation.
While terrorism has killed more than 3,000 people in the continental
United States in the last 15 years, homosexual behavior has
killed more than 100,000,” the Republican representative said. “It's
a danger to life. It is a danger to health.”

Gawker: Immediately
after his inauguration as president in 1933, Franklin Roosevelt
instituted a four-day bank holiday during which insolvent
institutions were closed and the survivors were given a federal seal
of approval. According to Italy's prime minister Silvio
Berlusconi, the big economies are discussing a similarly drastic
move, a closure of world markets, hopefully temporary. There's one
big difference [after the jump].

sub-par for Britney, but the actual routine as designed could have

#110 Though many white people consider competitive sports to be too
aggressive and macho for their tastes there are a few exceptions.
The most notable is Soccer since for some reason it is wrong
to get fired up about Football game, but right to get fired
up about a Football match. The second sport (term used
loosely) in this category is called Ultimate Frisbee or
simply Ultimate.

Slate:
That Barack Obama and William Ayers knew each other
during the 1990s may tell us something about the two men. But it
says much more about a particular time and place: Hyde Park,
Chicago, more than a decade ago. Obama first moved to Chicago in
1985, when he worked as a community organizer. But his career got on
its current course when he returned to Hyde Park in 1991 to practice
law and teach constitutional law at the University of Chicago. Four
years later, he met Ayers at a lunchtime meeting about school
reform.

Newsweek:
The global financial meltdown has caused a dramatic shift in the
2008 presidential race, according to the latest Newsweek
poll. With four weeks left in the presidential campaign, Barack
Obama now leads John McCain by double digits, 52 percent
to 41 percent among registered voters—a marked shift from the last
Newsweek poll, conducted one month ago, when the two candidates were
tied at 46 percent. Underlying Obama's
surge in support: An historic boiling over of dissatisfaction with
the status quo. An astounding 86 percent of voters now say they are
dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States,
while a mere 10 percent say they are satisfied. That's the highest
wrong track/right track ratio ever recorded in the
Newsweek poll.

Books & Books Coral GablesPerry's IQ is only 76, but he's not stupid. His
grandmother taught him everything he needs to know to survive: She taught him to
write things down so he won't forget them. She taught him to play the lottery
every week. And, most important, she taught him whom to trust. When Gram dies,
Perry is left orphaned and bereft at the age of thirty-one. Then his weekly
Washington State Lottery ticket wins him 12 million dollars, and he finds he has
more family than he knows what to do with. Peopled with characters both wicked
and heroic who leap of the pages, Patricia Wood’s Lottery (Berkley, $14) is a deeply satisfying,
gorgeously rendered novel about trust, loyalty, and what distinguishes us as
