Gawker: Barack Obama
purchased a full half-hour of airtime on CBS and NBC.
His very special infomercial is set to air Wednesday, October 29.
John McCain probably can't afford to do this! It's also not
unprecedented: Ross Perot did it, and it was hilarious and
awesome. Also they used to do it all the time in the 1960s. But
jeez, a half-hour is a long time! We hope he has a musical guest or
something?

South Florida Blade:
By the time he was 14,
Michael Acosta was known
among Miami Dade foster care agencies as a “runner.” He
developed a pattern of breaking rules and running away from the
homes and shelters he was placed in. Now 19 and out of the foster
system, Acosta remembers the year he had been placed 20 times in
different homes.

PageOneQ: The commercial is
targeted towards those who oppose the amendment for reasons that it
may affect domestic partnerships in the state. In a state like
Florida with many retirees, the message is an important one for
older couples who choose to be domestic partners rather than marry,
usually for financial reasons.

Newsweek:
Yes, she won the debate by not imploding. But governing requires
knowledge, and mindless populism is just that—mindless.
Palin is on the ticket because
she connects with everyday Americans. It is not shocking to
learn that politics played a big role in the making of a
presidential team (ticket-balancing to attract different
constituencies has been with us at least since Andrew Jackson
ran with John C. Calhoun, a man he later said he would like
to kill). But that honest explanation of the rationale for her
candidacy—not her preparedness for office, but her personality and
nascent maverickism in Alaska—raises an important question,
not only about this election but about democratic leadership. Do we
want leaders who are everyday
folks, or do we want leaders who
understand everyday folks? Therein lies an enormous difference,
one that could decide the presidential election and, if McCain
and Palin were to win, shape the governance of the nation.

Palin Problem

BBC
has been flooded with complaints after screening
a gay kiss on
EastEnders before the 9pm watershed. The 'offensive' scenes were
screened on Tuesday's episode of the soap and showed Christian
Clarke (John Partridge, 36) and Lee Thompson (Carl
Ferguson, 27) engage in a passionate kiss. In a statement the
BBC defended itself by saying it was down to parents to decide
whether the content of the show was suitable for children to watch.

Kiss On Prime Time
Queerty: Sure, they may be
vehemently homophobic and generally awful, but we have to give the
American Family Association credit for their ability to spin
bullshit into conservative gold. The Mississippi-based
organization this year launched a campaign against McDonald's
after the fast chain sponsored the National Gay and Lesbian
Chamber of Commerce.

Gay Agenda: A rising
community that is often an invisible underrepresented and
marginalized population is that of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual,
and Transgender (GLBT) people. Rowan University is
currently working towards becoming one of the many universities and
campuses worldwide to provide safe spaces that are highly visible
and easily identifiable to GLBT persons, where support and
understanding is key and bigotry and discrimination are not
tolerated.

So it looks like we're back on
the Depression's doorstep, with credit axed and markets
capsizing here and abroad. But one growth industry continues to
thrive reliably: Movies, where despite the ongoing threat of a SAG
work stoppage, studios are sinking more than a half-billion dollars
into productions for their 2010/2011 calendars. This after earning
nearly $7 billion at the domestic box office through September (more
than 10% of which came from The Dark Knightand Iron
Man alone) and increasingly hedging their bets with financiers based
everywhere from Manhattan Beach to Calcutta. While
you may be panicking, and both Wall Street and
Washington wonder where the bottom is, Hollywood is
betting on its history as a recession-proof redoubt — one that was
never sturdier than in the Great Depression. We can outlast
anything!
Why Hollywood's Recession- Proof Days May Be Nearing
an End
People Magazine: In an
upcoming documentary, Britney Spears candidly discusses her
loneliness and her regrets about her much-publicized erratic
behavior. "I sit there and I'll look back and I'm like: I'm a smart
person. What the hell was I thinking?" the pop star says in the
90-minute film, tentatively titled
For the Record, produced in partnership with MTV.

National Review Online:
McCain’s campaign says his plan would help “millions” of
borrowers stay in their homes without authorizing any new spending.
But he has not said how he plans to accomplish this without lowering
the standards set forth in the Frank-Dodd bill. And if he
does lower the standards — by, for example, letting people who can
afford their current payments get a write-down just because their
property value has fallen — then he would be offering taxpayer
assistance to “ruthless borrowers,” which is an industry term for
borrowers who default on their obligations not because they can’t
pay but because they’ve decided it’s not in their interest to pay.
Here is what is wrong with McCain’s new housing proposal: It can’t
improve on current law without rewarding an unacceptable amount of
bad behavior.
Here's Hillary!

Books & Books Coral GablesMiami Modernism, or MiMo, is the exotic brand
of mid-century architecture ubiquitous in the world-famous city. Designing the Good Life: Norman M. Giller and
the Develo PMent of Miami Modernism
(University Press of Florida, $39.95) is a personal account of the post-World
War II movement that shaped a city and defined an era. This captivating story
offers a unique look at the architecture of Norman M. Giller, one of the early
godfathers of MiMo. Giller made an indelible mark on the urban landscape with
architecturally progressive structures ideally suited to their surroundings,
including the Ocean Palm Motel, the Carillon Hotel, the North Shore Band Shell,
the Diplomat Hotel and Country Club, and the Giller Building. Tonight, Giller’s
daughter, co-author of the book, and art and architectural historian Sarah Giller Nelson, discusses
