The Miami Gay &
Lesbian Film Festival presents “Short
Bus” on October 19th
@ 7:30pm
at the Sunrise Gateway Cinema at 1820 E. Sunrise Blvd at US1 North and NE
18th Avenue. Over a period of two years, John Cameron Mitchell, the
creator, director and star of the stage musical and film Hedwig and the Angry
Inch, worked extensively with his actors to develop the script and characters
for his second feature Shortbus, an amazingly playful, pansexual study of modern
relationships set in Manhattan between the terrorist attacks of September
11th and the power outages of summer 2003. From the brilliantly realized opening
shots of an animated New York the audience is set up for a thought provoking
treat. James (Paul Dawson), a former hustler, and his hunky beau Jamie (PJ
De Boy) are a gay couple dealing with the monotony of monogamy. Sofia (Sook-Yin
Lee), a couple's counselor, has some pillow secrets of her own that she's
unable to share with her husband Rob. Severin (Lindsay Beamish) a jaded
dominatrix who never leaves home without her Polaroid and sex toys, is unable to
commit to a relationship. Their lives intersect at Shortbus 'a salon for the
challenged and gifted', a safe bohemian haven where like-minded souls can find
salvation, where sexual fantasies and explorations are permissible, which is
presided over by the divine Mistress Justin Bond (a.k.a. Kiki from Kiki and
Herb). Unveiled at
Cannes
to a standing ovation, and received with much acclaim at the recent Toronto
International Film Festival, Shortbus doesn't shy away from visually showing
us sex, real sex, whether it be gay, straight or lesbian couplings, and
threesomes. While acknowledging that Shortbus's version of "The Star Spangled
Banner" will never be broadcast live from the "Super Bowl", it is
patently clear that Cameron Mitchell is a maverick auteur and this is probably
one of the best independent movies you are going to see all year.
Tickets are
