Katie Viqueira is a brilliant
exponent of a new generation of
Argentine Tango vocalists. Her style
traces the musical roots of her
native Buenos Aires in a
contemporary setting. Ms. Viqueira
has been hailed as a "hot tango
star" and a "diva" by the Boston
Globe, recognition founded in a long
and successful career that started
many years ago in her hometown of
Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her vast
experience as a singer includes
working with some of Argentina's
leading pop artists , performing
live in radio and TV, and touring
nationally and internationally. Her
latest record, AMORES TORCIDOS (Freshsound
Records), which includes original
compositions, has won the renowned
INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS in the
World Music category. Ms. Viqueira
is among the few tango vocalists who
have interpreted both of Piazzolla's
best known pieces for orchestra: the
tango-oratory PUEBLO JOVEN, and the
opera-tango MARIA DE BUENOS AIRES
under the direction of Pablo Zinger.
Tierra Tango is led by Katie
Viqueira and Nando Michelin on piano
and arrangements, and is supported
by a set of outstanding musicians
from Argentina, Finland and Germany.

Who would suspect that a tiny little
mouse could wear out an energetic
young boy? Well, if you're going to
go around giving an exuberantly
bossy rodent a cookie, be prepared
to do one or two more favors for it
before your day is through. He'll
certainly need a glass of milk to
wash down that cookie, won't he? And
you can't expect him to drink the
milk without a straw, can you? By
the time you are finished granting
all of the mouse's very urgent
requests - and cleaning up after him
- it's no wonder your head is
becoming a bit heavy. Laura
Numeroff's tale of circular logic is
a sure-fire winner in the
giggle-generator category. But
underneath the folly rest valuable
lessons about life. |

Fans of world music, African jazz,
rock, reggae and classic R&B alike
appreciate the powerful melodies of
outspoken Zimbabwe musician, Thomas
Mapfumo. His new release, Rise Up,
(Now out on Peter Gabriels Real
World Records) is a tour de force
musically, and continues the
political and cultural crusades that
have gotten both him and his music
banned in Zimbabwe. Beloved by the
people in his native country, and
more popular for over 2 decades than
its president, his new release now
takes the world by storm. A joyous
combination of musical styles from
hip-hop and raga to rollicking
township dance grooves and refracted
glimmers of reggae and R&B - hes
created an exciting new genre all
his own called Chimurenga. Few
bandleaders anywhere have been as
relevant to the lives of their
people as this self-styled poet of
the righteous, and few will deliver
such a moving musical event. |
