Los Angeles,
Rise and Fall of the City of

called a satirical indictment of
capitalism an opera—but is it an opera
or a musical? Treated now as a
major opera and with a 1979 landmark

Antigua Indian Art At
Risk
Currently, in Antigua, there are
land-clearing projects that are
seriously endangering ancient
archeological sites that are estimated
from 500 B.C. In St. John, excavation
has begun that threatens a unique
ancient settlement where Arawak Indians
lived from an estimated 500 B.C. until
the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
Deemed one of the most valuable
archaeological sites in the Caribbean
means nothing and they have begun
clearing out the land, damaging valuable
undiscovered pottery near a dried-up
creek that establishes and verifies a
cultural chronology of the Arawaks. It
seems that UNESCO, the United Nations’
cultural agency has been trying to no
avail to make the site a World Heritage
Site. The Arawak Indians inhabited many
Caribbean islands and large sections of
South America before the European
conquest, and, as of right now, this is
the last remaining undisturbed
section. |

SEI Water
As many know, I come from a small town in Upstate New
York. When referring, I use all three towns nearby and
call it Saugerties-Kingston-Woodstock which
covers roughly 50 square miles and is right along the
Hudson River, 36 miles South of Albany and 100 directly
North of NYC. Well, maybe now I should include
Catskill, the neighboring town to the North. Why? They
have decided to get in on the bottled water market and
have released SEI Catskill Mountain Spring Water
that is sourced out The Catskills. Available at
Balducci’s, and at
www.balduccis.com and retails for a mere $1.89 a
bottle this water is cool, funny, unique, and funky
because of the bottle—it looks like a flask and is
perfect for those weekend trips in the middle of the
woods with your “fishing buddy.” |

of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice and calls for
strengthening the foundations of the 321-foot campanile
to counteract the fissures in the foundation that were
first noticed in 1939 and have since grown by .04

History Rising in Dubai
One of the most fascinating areas for construction these
days is the
Middle East’s own country…Dubai.
Known for creating The Palm and The World
Dubai has found more and more ways to fascinate us
through an unlimited capital resource. They have a
downhill snow skiing hill creation in the 110 degree
desert, and now they give us, Burj. At the
crossroads of India and the Middle East, equidistant
between Europe and Asia, Dubai is fast becoming the
financial and cultural hub for over a billion people.
Call it a jewel, monument, or icon—but only a privileged
group of people will call it home. They don’t want to
be the highest building, but embody the world’s highest
ambitions and an unprecedented example of international
cooperation. For more information or to take a tour of
a spectacular building, go to

Cabanas and Student Lofts
Last week paired up the remaining nine contestants into
three teams. Their assignment, create a luxurious
cabana in the style of the postcard given to you and
your group. Three resort destinations were chosen:
Tahiti, San Troupe, and
Miami. They were given budgets, but this challenge was
a little different in the fact that they not only had to
design and build it, but do it on the beach next to each
other. Second part that was new, each of the three
members of the team were required to do different tasks,
and they themselves would have to chose shopping
destinations based on skill, ability, and vision all
ending up in a display cabana on the beach. The winners
were not given immunity, but a weekend pass to a resort
with a real designer cabana.
This week the remaining eight designers were given the
challenge: Design for up-and-coming design students.
Each was given a student and after meeting with them,
given a budget and vision. Cut to
5am
the next morning…Todd Oldham is waking everyone up and
informing them that the other half of the challenge is
that all the materials are to be purchased from garage
sales! Scrounging, bargain shopping, and haggling all
around town, each member found at least one thing that
made their client’s room a home. Best part of this
episode—you finally get to meet the Carpenters! Not the
singing group, but I just had to put that in…with their
hands-on creativity; they help the contestants achieve
their dream. What’s my dream? Jared! You will notice
him this week during the marathon during the Cabana
Challenge shirtless and being fanned by Carissa. Lucky
girl!

As anyone that knows me, I am a big fan of recycled
furniture. I would like the opportunity to bring light
to a new designer in the Los Angeles Furniture Design
scene—Samuel Moyer. Samuel saves wood from
disintegrating East Coast barns. While working with
friends and with a variety of different projects
throughout his career, Samuel has mastered the
traditional woodworking techniques of the barn
builders and old school furniture makers since the
settling of
America. He has merged the two sleek lines and you
might associate it with a Eameses & Aalto but this is a
hybrid of Bucks County, PA and Los Angeles. They
feature hand-painted surfaces, oiled finishes, and
expert motise & tenon joinery. Check him out at

Since
this past week was the worst day for being single, and
for many people I know even worse if in Limbo
Relationships, I have picked the most appropriate
book for you…Are you sick of meeting the “wrong”
guys? Are you tired of making the wrong decisions as
far as men are concerned? Well maybe…He’s
Just Not That Into You may be your answer! Did
you not receive that ring you wanted or talked yourself
into deserving? Well, there might be a
reason! This might possibly be the book to blatantly,
tell you the reason. |
