Dixie Chicks Make
Nice
This past week marked the music
world’s greatest award show, The Grammys. Well, this
year was really interesting for the fact that formerly
banned and publicly ostracized Dixie Chicks
took home five Grammy’s one of which was Album,
Record, and Song of the Year for Taking
The Long Way that featured Not Ready to
Make Nice. This group was thrown to controversy
when they publicly criticized President Bush’s plans
with the Middle East. This exposed tensions between the
music industry’s Nashville establishment and the
broader, more diverse membership of the Recording
Academy—who chooses Grammy winners. So much for
censorship and holding good women down! |

Presidential Corner |
|
Since this weekend we will be celebrating President’s
Day and enjoying a day off from work
(for some) on Monday, I thought that I
would feature some things about the men
we worship—as we party into the wee
hours of the morning Sunday night…
Did you know that this week marks the birth of Abraham
Lincoln, 16th President?
He was born in present-day
Larue County, Kentucky and in 1915 the
cornerstone of the Lincoln Memorial
was laid in Washington, D.C. For more
information about the memorial, go to
http://www.nps.gov/linc/.
He’s a Survivor and Fifty Cent has
NOTHING on George! Did you know that
Washington's experiences as a young man
made it seem unlikely that he would ever
live long enough to achieve greatness?
He suffered from: malaria, smallpox,
pleurisy, and dysentery, all before he
was 30. On his way back from the famous
expedition to the French Fort le Boeuf,
he fell off his raft in an icy river and
nearly drowned. Later in the same trip
he was shot at (and missed) by an Indian
standing less than 50' away. In
Braddock's Defeat in 1755, 4 bullets
punctured Washington's coat and 2 horses
were shot out from under him, but the
young officer somehow emerged unscathed. |

The Bobble Head
Sadly, last week we lost one of our generation’s greatest
media machines, Anna Nicole Smith.
With that being said, items formerly
rendered Collectors Items by most
is now the hottest commodity. Everyone
is coming out the woodwork to sell
personal mementos to the highest
bidder. These items include personally
autographed copies of her Playboys,
panties, especially her Bobble Head from
her E! Network reality show. The
internets most predominant personal
auction site, eBay, has listings that
are pages long. Internet domain names
such as
www.thestoryofannanicolesmith.com
was listed just after the clock struck
midnight the day of her death and sold
for $3,500 just before 4:30pm the next
day. This is nothing new, just the
vehicles to purchase these items are.

Architecture |

What
are you supposed to do when your town’s building was
formerly a tower constructed to help block out Western
propaganda and now there’s no need for it? Put some
babies on it! In the
Czech
Republic’s town of Zizkov, they had such a problem. The
Soviets had built a massive modernist building in the
center of town, but now they’re gone..what to do?
Well, David Cerny, famed controversial Czech
artist did his duty, and put babies all over this
immense building, giving it a cheerful and whimsy feel.
The building, sits in the middle of The Bronx of
Prague and is an eclectic mix of architecture—19th
century neo-baroque and Rococo and is surrounded by
1960’s Commie Condos that boxy and gray. Zizkov,
now a thriving area, has changed over the past decade to
include the hip, young, and artists from all over the
area. They have trendy clubs, pubs, restaurants,
galleries, and former pre-Communist buildings are
getting their renovations and respect they once had.

In honor of President’s Day I have decided to not only
feature one book, but two! The first book is 1776
where two-time Pulitzer Prize Winner David
McCullough tells the story of the year of our
nation’s birth and tells the story of George Washington
and King George III and the grassroots campaign of our
outnumbered colonists who fought and won the impossible
war against one of the world’s mightiest armies. Not
only does David capture the history, but makes it human
and personable. |

Second, is a book that I read when
it first came out and I have been waiting for this
opportunity, The Intimate World of Abraham Lincoln
by the late C.A. Tripp. As a person that
loves history this book by one of Kinsey’s Sex
Researchers who studied for the last ten years of his
life the writings and truth about Lincoln, he searches
for hidden keys to Lincoln’s character. This book was
amazing because the methods that were used to prove many
of the facts are scientific and factual. What is a
person who has attractions supposed to do when there
isn’t even a word yet? People are sent to insane
asylums for masturbation and chastity belts and
apparatuses are constructed for boys with constant
erections. What are you supposed to do? In this
pre-Victorian age, all you have are the writings,
personal accounts, and artifacts in code and we have to
piece it all together in your own head. In this book
you will see things and compare them against Kinsey’s
scale, where at one end you are completely
homosexual or heterosexual, with varying degrees either
way. This is not a novel in any way, and is more like a
text book, but fascinating none-the-less. |
