Spain Gets Real
As I have reported over the recent months, what is making
big waves around the fashion world is that
Spain
wants Curves! Prior to Fashion Week in Madrid late last
year, authorities had announced that they will no longer
employ models for their catwalks that are too skinny and
if you have less than a specified body mass, you won’t
walk. Well, as the story progresses, the latest is that
the government is working with fashion designers to
standardize women’s clothing sizes to promote a
healthier image. Mannequins in Spain’s store windows
will get curvier, displaying clothing no smaller than a
US size 8. The company that owns Zara, with a
store in Aventura Mall, has gotten involved and jumped
onboard. |

Look For Change in
Hollywood, CA
Currently, there are plans in motion to turn the once
glamorous
Hollywood, CA back into a entertainment
and tourism Mecca. Anyone that has been
there over the years will have noticed
the cheap quality of the once capital of
glamour and glitz. As former Mayor
Juliani did for Times Square in New York
City, people are now focusing on cleaning up the former
glittering screen capital by
constructing a luxury hotel as well as a
collection of $1M condominiums. The
focus of Hollywood's most recent Urban
renewal project is currently on the
famous
Hollywood and Vine intersection. This
will add to the skyline of condos and
trendy new hamburger and sushi places
rising among the mid-20th
century architecture. Over the past
several years more than $2B has been
spent on projects in the neighborhood
through retail, apartment complexes, new
schools and museums. Well, the comeback
that civic leaders have sought for
decades seems to have finally arrived.
Be on the lookout for a new W hotel, and
of course the anchor of every urban
renewal project, retail to start popping
in the area! I’ll keep you posted. |

Shelve It!
If you are like me and in your Dream House there is
definitely a Library, why not set aside some space,
wherever you may currently reside, and make one? As a
Child of the 80’s and
ABC’s
Schoolhouse Rocks devotee, I can still remember the most
important message they gave us…Knowledge is Power. Even
though I rarely get the time to read an actual book, I
still have the ones that I have cherished. I prefer
hardcover books, and would love to fill a room with them
and others, separated between the ones I Have Read and
Want to Read. As you are thinking about this, a Library
could be just as simple as a dedicated wall. There are
shelving units available in any shape, size, material,
and ability to suit your needs. You can go to Home
Depot and Do It Yourself or hire a contractor if you
would like something more intricate, say something with
doors. If you are planning on a wooden wall style
bookcase, Mica Products and Wood in Boca suggest
that you:
·
Use
sturdy wood at least ¾ inch thick and no more than
18-24”s wide to prevent sagging
·
Use a
constant horizontal line for shelves that wrap around a
corner
·
Use
pins for removable shelves for a variety of book sizes
Also, if you do not have enough books or want to space them
out, why not put in black & white photos, miniature
statues, or interesting pieces to use as bookends?
Also, mix and match book sizes, colors, and textures.
Remember, this can be art too and your creativity is
your only boundary.

Night
Last
year, The Oprah announced that her Book Club would
feature Elie Wiesel’s Holocaust memoir Night,
which tells his harrowing tale of his life at Auschwitz
Concentration Camp. I caught the episode where she went
with Elie to Auschwitz and privately toured the camp
ending with a long room with one continuous pile of
hair. Hair! Every day the level of crimes against
humanity sinks to a new low and on that day it was
hair. With the help of The Oprah, Elie’s book sold more
than 1.5 million copies, including me—that day, and made
it a must-read we should all experience. |

Scrapbooks
Currently, at The International Center of Photography
they are hosting a show of Heri Cartier’s work
entitled, Scrapbook: Photographs 1932-1946.
See, during WWII, Cartier-Bresson was captured and held
in a German prisoner of war camp. Presumed dead, MoMA
began preparing a memorial exhibition but when
Cartier-Bresson emerged, he joined the efforts to
assemble this retrospective. He selected and personally
printed 251 prints of his best work that have been
reassembled for this occasion. The exhibition, organized
by the Foundation Henri Cartier-Bresson, will have its
sole American venue at ICP. In 1946 while it was
presumed that Henri was dead, they planned for but then
he attended his “posthumous” show at The Museum of
Modern Art. This show reconstructs as best as possible,
the original layout of the scrapbook. This book details
the work he shot in Spain, Italy, Mexico, Britain, and
France with shots of crowds in Hyde Park in London at
King George VI’s coronation, picnicking on the banks of
Marne in France, whores in Valencia, Spain. Boys mug at
his camera while prostitutes swan, all the while their
gazes equalize them with us. The International Center
of Photography is located at 113 Avenue of the Americas
at 43rd Street and can be found at

With
the help of superior vocals by Jennifer Hudson
and dreamy looks of Beyoncé Knowles, the musical
turned hit movie may be back on Broadway! Even though
the Oscars had snubbed Dreamgirls for Best
Movie, Broadway is ready to welcome back their hit
with open arms. There is a meeting planned this month
to discuss plans for a revival and they are going to
figure out how they can do this. With the movie
generating plenty of publicity and hype, Jennifer Hudson
will probably reprise Effie, the role she played on
screen. The original musical debuted at the Imperial
Theater in 1981 and garnered a Tony for Jennifer Holiday
in 1984. I definitely recommend seeing her performance
from that on youtube.com! Can we say tears? Stay tuned
for further details as they…materialize! |

Shu
At the
China Institute, they are featuring a collection of
pieces called Shu: Reinventing Books in
Contemporary Chinese Art. This is the second
installation of a two-part show that glances back at the
period of artistic expansion in the 1970’s and
contraction—after the 1989 Tianamen Square
protests. Photographs by Uiu Zhijie line the
walls of the Institute’s main staircase are featured
along with Chinese classic books, letters, and
manuscripts. This collection features over 30
challenging works by more than 20 artists, many of whom
have never before been seen in the United States and
brings together a carefully selected group of art books
created in the early 1980’s. They want us to remember
that without easy access to words…there can be no
such thing as free expression. The China Institute
is located at 125 East 65th Street and can be
found at
www.chinainstitute.org or by calling them at

The Rapture Project
At the Here Arts Center they are presently having a
theatre display called, The Rapture Project.
This eccentric show has marionettes, an oompah band
and is based after the Sicilian puppet theatre of the 19th
century. This features clashes between Christians
and Muslims, Susan Sontag floats through and gets into a
fight with Beelzebub along with a former City
Commissioner selling faulty armor for use in
Iraq. Music was composed and performed by
saxophone playing Jessica Lurie and adds to the
quirkiness of the play. This runs until January 21st
at the
Here
Arts Center that is located at 145 Avenue of the
Americas
at Dominick Street in the South Village. For
further information, call them at 212*352-3101. |
