Matierialust

One of the items I came across this week in my search to find the hip and now items that can be talked about is a relatively new company called Matierialust.  Based on the appreciation of traveling, artwork, and found items from around the globe, they use graphics on shirts that are drawn from such things as vintage travel brochures, matchbooks, posters, cocktail napkins, and even street graphics.  Matierialust brings fabulous artwork, fit, comfort, and quality all together in their unique line.  It has been developed for the souls and minds of those who love to explore the world and its many cultures.  They provide and opportunity to snag a memory of a past voyage or even future ones.  Simply, choose your destination!  All sales benefit the New Orleans Art Research organizations and can be found at www.materialust.com.  Don’t forget, when traveling, one of the most treasured mementos has always been, and forever will be, the souvenir t-shirt.

Be wary of Impostors

It has been decided lat week that Alfredo Versace is barred from selling clothing, handbags, bottled water, and other items, anything with the Versace name.  Over the past decade, Alfredo has been cited numerous times for violating court orders and infringing on the Versace trademark.  In 1998 a Manhattan federal judge barred him unless he included a disclaimer that it was not affiliated with the Italian company.  Even though he claims to be a relative, the fashion house has never found any relation.  Moral of the story: I guess if it doesn’t scream Get Ouuuuuut and reek of cigarettes when you touch it, it’s a fake.  Of course you deserve a fake if you are buying it from a card table on the street.

Funney / Strange

Through January 28th, the Norton Museum of Art is featuring William Wegman’s collection of photographs that are, for a lack of a better word, Funney/Strange (yes, I spelled funney, the way they spelled funney).  Within the collection are more than 200 works, among them the signature 24 X 20 Polaroids, early black and white altered photographs, paintings, drawings, collages, art books, videos, and film.

They also have Before The Camera: Remaking Reality and the Make-Believe until January 7th.   This is a collection comprising works from local and national collections that looks at the distinction between “taking” and “making” photographs.  Historically, photographers “took” them while artists “make” an artwork.  Within the past couple of decades, creativity has merged.  See what they have found.

Elbowed Picasso

Oops. Casino magnate Steve Wynn accidentally elbowed and poked a hole in a Picasso last year and now has filed a lawsuit against famed Lloyd’s of London contending that it failed to act properly on his demands to pay $54M in lost value for the 1932 Le Rêve The Dream) painting.  The suit seeks to force Lloyd’s to expedite his claims for reimbursement and restoration costs by providing him with an appraisal report or initial damages assessment.  What this all boils down to is the fact that he claims that he bought it for $48.4M in 1997, claims it was worth an estimated $139M the day before he damaged it, and now worth less than $85M.  If he doesn’t like it that much, my address is 2450 NE…

Russian Makes it Big

The cover of London’s Sotheby’s February 5th’s catalog is Man With a Red Scarf.  Why is that important?  Well, Chaim Soutine, the Lithuanian-born Expressionist painter’s work of a bohemian-looking man in a dark jacket and bright red scarf is important because the collection is Russian art is big, and London is the place where many Russian billionaires live and where they go to shop. The painting, done in 1921, is being sold for an estimated $5.9M- $9.8M when it was only purchased it ten years ago for $1.6M.  How do you know when art is for you?  The seller said that I never asked anyone’s opinion.  It was the greatest Soutine I’ve ever seen for sale.

Opera News

Satyagraha

Plans are in the works as I write for a collaboration between The English National Opera and the Metropolitan Opera to showcase the new production of Satyagraha.  This Opera, written in 1980 by Phillip Glass is based on Gandhi’s formative years in South Africa, as he developed his philosophy of non-violent protest and the power it has to make serious changes.  The two companies have previously worked together to bring Puccini’s Madama Butterfly that opened in London in 2005 and New York in September.  This production is scheduled to open in London in April and in 2008 at The Met in NY.

Also, London Theatre-buffs will be pleased to know that the Royal Festival Hall is almost done with its $180M makeover and will reopen in June with a concert featuring:  The Philharmonia, The London Philharmonic Orchestra, The London Sinfonietta, and The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Wine Time

Champagne

Fun Fact:  Champagne is a region of France about 90 miles east of Paris and only sparkling wine from there can only be considered true Champagne.

This region is the primary producer of the only grapes that yield the taste of Champagne’s legend.  They have been wine making in France since the 3rd century AD yet it took hundreds of years to experiment, understand, and refine the process to get the wines we know today.  The cool climate, chalky soil, and long history of wine making and expertise makes the perfect combination and impossible to duplicate.  So, does it matter where it comes from?  If it’s not from Champagne—it’s simply not Champagne.

For more information about this go to www.champagne.us, and, if you know of anyone in Culinary School, they are having their 2nd Annual Champagne Pairing Culinary Contest where lucky winners will win an all expense paid trip to the Champagne region of France.

Home Decor

Silicone for the Home

Does your kitchen need some brightening up?  Are you ready for Silicone cookware?  Well, this latest psychedelic kitchen craze is taking over the market.  Not to say that our friends with the complete set of William & Sonoma cookware should toss them out, but maybe some muffin cups in pastels, a cookie baking sheet, or potholders could help them out.  Up until about ten years ago, Silicone was primarily synthetic rubber but now make up to 7% of bakeware, according to HomeWorld Business and are expected to exceed more than 2.7 million units in 2007.  But are they useful or just pretty?  Even though they are stick-resistant, items still have to be greased.  Silicone is not Teflon.  The best items are the potholders or baking surfaces for cookies but do something like peel a lemon?  Um no.  Another plus is that it is heat resistant, flexible, easy to wash, and ability to go from the stove-table-fridge-microwave without problems and most are dishwasher safe.  Environmentally friendly, most seal and can be “burped” so that it cuts down on the amount of aluminum foil and plastic wrap normally used.

Silicone Zone is a wonderful company that provides a wide variety of products to choose from and can be found at www.cookwareessentials.com
