The Gucci Loafer of Feather Coats
There is a
new trend in men’s outer garments and perfect for those
unconventional lads that do not want to be seen
in a Peacoat—The Parka! This season’s men’s wear
must-have is the Moncler ski parka which
hails from
Europe, Milan exactly, and became part of fashion
history in the 80’s Levi and Timberland wearing Milanese
teenagers called paninari who also popularized
Moncler. Two decades later, sales are soaring 30
percent in one year even though outerwear sales are down
due to El Niño affected winter. Their items are not
cheap: a basic jacket sells for about $800 and have
even been strong sellers in warmer climates like Fred
Segal in Los Angeles, where people are not just buying a
coat; they are associating as a part of a ski-happy jet
set lifestyle being taken over in the
Alps. One thing that makes them interesting is that they are a European
fit, cut for a more athletic frame and not so boxy.

Funney / Strange
Through January 28th, the Norton
Museum of Art is featuring William Wegman’s
collection of photographs that are, for a lack of a
better word, Funney/Strange (yes, I spelled funney, the
way they spelled funney). Within the collection are
more than 200 works, among them the signature 24 X 20
Polaroids, early black and white altered photographs,
paintings, drawings, collages, art books, videos, and
film.
They
also have Before The Camera: Remaking Reality and the
Make-Believe until January 7th. This is a
collection comprising works from local and national
collections that looks at the distinction between
“taking” and “making” photographs. Historically,
photographers “took” them while artists “make” an
artwork. Within the past couple of decades, creativity
has merged. See what they have found.
The
Norton Museum of Art is located at 1451 South Olive
Avenue in West Palm Beach. You can find them at
www.norton.org or at 561*832-5198. |
The
Year of Art
|
|
Museums Are Stretching Their Walls
Maybe 2007 will be The Year of Art and we can start
relaxing and thinking about other things than what is on
our TiVo. All over the world, museums and galleries
have been doing major construction, renovations,
expansions, and literally have been popping up all over
the place. This is the time to stop and get some
culture, see some things you normally cannot see, and
take pride in the cultural events going on around you.
In the
United States
alone there is an estimated half-billion dollars spent
in 2006 for renovations, repairs, and expansions by the
new generation of brad-name designers called Star-chitects.
Budgets have grown and fundraisers have exceeded
expectations over the past couple of years and now the
focus in some cases are the buildings themselves! In
Denver alone, the Denver Art Museum spent an estimated
$110M on their project, and people are beginning to see
the museum not just as a building but as a part of the
whole city. So, what I am saying is, basically, Get
thee to a gallery!

There’s WAR at the Onassis Center
Yes, the Persian Wars are back in play at The Onassis
Cultural Center for cultural dominance. Always
thought of as the Cultural Capital of the Classic
World,
Athens had dominated not only in war but in art as
well. However, after placing their works against their
contemporaries—The Spartans, experts suggest that the
rival city-state created some fine works that once again
competes with them. During this time Athens had:
celebrated artists, theatre, writers, philosophers,
architecture, and democracy while in Sparta they were
devoted to the military and matters of the state and
forced many male citizens into the army for most of
their lives. Even though their focus was war, they still
focused on art as well through activities associated
with the gods and the cult of ancestors. This show
centers around the Spartan or Laconian achievements in
the arts by bringing artifacts from both
city-states and suggests that Sparta wasn’t the
backwoods-hillbilly as traditionally thought of before.
There are examples of: pottery, metalwork, and ivory
from the Archaic Period (650-480 BC)—when Greece had
it’s hayday. This exhibit runs until May 12th,
and the Onassis Cultural Center is located at 645 Fifth
Avenue near 52nd Street in New York City, and
can be found at
www.onassisusa.org or by calling them at
212*486-4448. |

Wolfgangsvault Angers Rockers
There is
a heated controversy going on right now by many rockers
in the music industry that feel that they are being
taken advantage of and copied illegally. See, the whole
debate and possible feud started when William Sagan
bought items from Bill Graham, a concert promoter, who
died back in 1991. Mr. Graham had a wide collection of
memorabilia and rare audio and video recordings from his
own personal collection, which he sold fair and square.
The problem is now, William Sagan has started a website
called
www.wolfgangsvault.com and has rare streaming video
footage, but also sells other merchandise including
T-shirts, photographs, and other rare items. He is
currently being sued by Grateful Dead Productions,
Carlos Santana, members of Led Zeppelin, and the
Doors. |

Who Says an Architect Can’t Be a
Decorator?
Currently,
at The Neue Gallery in Manhattan,
architect-designer Mr. Hoffmann helped create complete
spaces for his Viennese clients back in 1913.
Gesamkunstwerk means “Total Work of Art” and Mr.
Hoffmann truly believed in it. He would have entire
rooms sketched out, from the ceilings to the floors,
every wall mapped out with specific artworks,
sculptures, furniture, textiles, lighting, ceramics,
glass, and metal work. On display now are four complete
replica rooms of the ones he did in Vienna for the
apartment of the Suiss Symbolist painter Ferdinand
Hodler which is a large and calm space with furniture
that has a pre-postmodern look. The Neue Gallery
is located at 1048 Fifth Avenue at 86th
Street in Manhattan. For further information go to

MoMA Has Some Off-the-Wall Cinema
Do you like the unusual? Do you like to think? If so, and
you are not an epileptic, then maybe Doug
Aitken’s unconventional show is for you! Using
multiple screens and unlikely surfaces, his video
projections will force you to move around. In the past
he has trapped characters in large wooden crates,
flashed pairs of eyes on the façade of the
Secession Building in Vienna, and flooded the basement
of the Serpentine Gallery in
London
with watery images. Starting January 16th,
Mr. Aitken will take over the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
with his latest creation, Sleepwalkers which will
run nightly from 5 to 10 p.m. and contain eight film
projections and features rhythmic, poetic, and possibly
abstract imagery relating to five New Yorkers
(Executive, office worker, bike messenger, postal
worker, and electrician) making their way through a full
day in the city. The Museum of Modern Art is located
at 11 West 53rd Street between Fifth and
Sixth Avenues in New York and can also be found at
www.moma.org. |
