Funney / Strange
Through January 28th, the Norton
Museum of Art is featuring William Wegman’s
collection of photographs that are, for a lack of a
better word, Funney/Strange (yes, I spelled funney, the
way they spelled funney). Within the collection are
more than 200 works, among them the signature 24 X 20
Polaroids, early black and white altered photographs,
paintings, drawings, collages, art books, videos, and
film.
They
also have Before The Camera: Remaking Reality and the
Make-Believe until January 7th. This is a
collection comprising works from local and national
collections that looks at the distinction between
“taking” and “making” photographs. Historically,
photographers “took” them while artists “make” an
artwork. Within the past couple of decades, creativity
has merged. See what they have found.
The
Norton Museum of Art is located at 1451 South Olive
Avenue in West Palm Beach. You can find them at

In
Remembrance
|
|
This past week marked the passing of a great screen and
television legend, Peter Boyle. Recently
finishing a nine year stint at Frank Barone on
Everybody Loves Raymond and receiving five Emmy
nominations, Peter has done everything. Being in stage
and theatre, he went from gangster movies to
Frankenstein in Mel Brook’s Young Frankenstein
who sang Putting on the Ritz in 1974. He
was always tough, or at least wanted to appear tough in
his characters. Playing the bigoted dark side retired
prison guard opposite Billy Bob Thornton in 2001’s
Monster’s Ball that created a lot of controversy.
He was 71 years old and passed due to heart disease.

sold to the museum back in 1993. The Greek government
has documentation that the wreath was dug up by a farmer
in 1990 nar Serres, in northern Greece and then passed
on the Black Market through
Germany
and Switzerland before getting to the Getty in 1993.

Ani DiFranco is
Reprieved
The perfect gift for this holiday
season would be Ani DiFranco’s 18th album,
Reprieve. Having been around since 1990, Ani has
been a fighting force within the disenfranchised and
loveless generation of the 90’s. Not a mainstream
musician, DiFranco has become the cult icon of many Gays
and Lesbians who are constantly questioning things
like: life, love, politics, and
especially—themselves.
The songs on Reprieve are quiet and relatively
sparse, often carried by lightly finger-picked guitar
solos. She is experimenting with ambience using subtle
sounds, acoustic instruments, environmental noises, and
distorted echoes. Now, the atmosphere is as
important as the words. As this album unfolds,
it creates space for questions as well as answers. For
more Ani info, go to her official website,
www.righteousbabe.com.

Currently, in
Arizona, the Hualapai (WALL-uh-pie) Tribe is working
with architects to create a skywalk for their section of
the Grand Canyon. This glass-bottom observation deck
will be 4,000 feet above the Colorado River and will be
on the Hualapai Indian Reservation. Called The Skywalk,
it will be a horseshoe-shaped walkway that will go out
and jut out from the lip of the canyon and offer the
kind of straight-down, vertigo-inducing view that was
previously only available through a helicopter. It will
be cantilevered 70 feet out past the canyon’s limestone
walls and will be open to the sky with glass walls and
floor and will be able to hold a few hundred people and
withstand 100 mph winds. Planning to open in March, the
$30M Skywalk is creating a dispute with Elders over
disturbing sacred ground, yet others say they need to do
something to help out their 2,200 members; more than a
third are on or below the poverty line. For $25, you
will be higher than any building on Earth, and the
Colorado River will be a thin brown ribbon below.

Kahn Gallery at Yale
The Kahn Gallery of Art at
Yale University has been completed and
is ready to show its contents and puts
Louis I. Kahn back on the pedestal he so
richly deserves. This was the first of
his great masterpieces and the building
foreshadows the atavistic landmarks of
his late career. The project includes
Paul Rudolph’s 1963 Art and Architecture
building and the construction of an art
history building across the street.
What should be remembered? History is
constantly changing, being challenged,
and revised. Years of senseless
alterations have been stripped away and
the basic structures are restored, all
elements of their glory is reclaimed.
The west façade has been rebuilt so that
its glass and steel frame regains its
original lightness and a sunken exterior
court that was previously covered over
to make room for more gallery space has
been taken away—allowing light to spill
down once more into the lower
galleries. |

Satyagraha
This week, the English National Opera and the Metropolitan
Opera have announced plans to collaborate on a new
production entitled, Satyagraha. This Philip
Glass production was written in 1980 and is based on
Gandhi’s formative years in
South
Africa as he developed his philosophies concerning
non-violent protests and their uses as a powerful force
of change. This is the second “portrait” trilogy by Mr.
Glass, the others being Einstein on the Beach
(1975) and Akhnaten (1983-1984). The visionary
British theater company Improbable, will open it

Christine Baranski has
Regrets Only
Famed funny-girl and gay icon of television and movies,
Christine Baranski, is once again donning the role
of a socialite who loves money, clothes, jewelry, and
high life. Her best friend is ostensibly a “Bill
Blass-type” fashion designer. She has played countless
roles that we all want to play her best friend,
from Cybil Shepherd’s confidant in Cybil to the
biological mother in The Birdcage, she is the
person we wish to be friends with. Regrets Only
has hilarious performance of a mostly super-fine cast,
with Ms. Baranski being the star that she is.
Regrets Only is at the Manhattan Theatre Club at
City Center-State I that is located at
131
W. 55th Street. You can contact them at

Ron Mueck is at The Brooklyn Museum
Through February 4th, The Brooklyn Museum
is proud to host a show of Ron Mueck’s
sculptures. These lifelike fiberglass and silicone
human figures are so lifelike that the Australian
sculptor made them that you might talk to them. There
is an 10 inch tall infant and a 21 foot woman in a bed
all of whom embody the perils and challenges of the
human condition. Strangest being a 40 inch rendering of
his deceased father’s naked body called Dead Dad
as well as Man in a Boat that has a two feet tall
man naked in a lifesize row boat. The Brooklyn Musuem
located at
200
Eastern Parkway at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY. You
can contact them at
www.brooklynmuseum.org or by phone at 718*638-5000. |
