Funney / Strange
Through January 28th, the Norton
Museum of Art is featuring William Wegman’s
collection of photographs that are, for a lack of a
better word, Funney/Strange (yes, I spelled funney, the
way they spelled funney). Within the collection are
more than 200 works, among them the signature 24 X 20
Polaroids, early black and white altered photographs,
paintings, drawings, collages, art books, videos, and
film.
They
also have Before The Camera: Remaking Reality and the
Make-Believe until January 7th. This is a
collection comprising works from local and national
collections that looks at the distinction between
“taking” and “making” photographs. Historically,
photographers “took” them while artists “make” an
artwork. Within the past couple of decades, creativity
has merged. See what they have found.

The famed dress Audrey Hepburn wore in the 1961’s
Breakfast at Tiffany’s just sold at
Christie’s of

scenes of the movie and show Audrey emerging from a taxi

best part of the sale is that the dress was given as a

Aid to sell to help raise money for India’s
economically disadvantaged children with schools and
things they need. |

Jonathan LeVine Gallery
Right now, at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery you can catch
Ray Ceaser’s collection. Ray was born in
London but raised in Toronto, has never stopped
drawing. Having worked for 17 years at The Hospital for
Sick Children in
Toronto
in their Art and Photography Department, he documented
various abuses, surgical reconstruction, psychology, and
animal research. Working from his dreams, his digital
work is similar to those of Frida Kahlo,
Salvador Dali,
and
Paul Cadmus. Most people assume they are
paintings due to the seamless blending of his work as
well as its unique emotional impact. Creating models in
a 3D modeling software called Maya, he then wraps them
in painted and manipulated texture maps and adds digital
lights to simulate shadows and reflections, completing
the effect of a mysterious and strange “real world.”

USS
Intrepid
Finally Moved
After three weeks of continued dredging, the NY floating
museum and landmark USS Intrepid has finally been
moved from it’s homeport in New York Harbor. As you
might remember, I announced the grand moving last month
that had at least two Senators, the Navy Band, and
fanfare worthy of the end of WWII. Well, sadly, they
did not realize that the screws (propellers) were buried
deep in the mud and the dredging that they did
was not enough and then the US Navy chipped in an
additional $3M to release it from it’s pier. While
underway, with no fanfare, the silent survivor of five
kamikaze attacks went past the remains of WTC and
unfurled a 50’ X 90’ American Flag. Joe Cobert, former
crewmember of the Intrepid, said that “…if she
[didn’t] move, he was going to jump in and push her.”
Thank God, because Joe is 84. Many former crewmembers
were on hand, including Felix Novelli, who served on her
during WWII, and “..felt like [he] was 18 again.” The
Intrepid is now at a
New Jersey shipyard receiving some much overdo maintenance and
makeover and is expected to return in Spring 2008. |
