Earth, Air, Fire, Water, October 10- 21,
2006
No, I am
not talking about the chant from The Craft—even
though it is one of my favorite movies, but a show
appearing at The Gallery of the Unknown Artist in
Hollywood. The show, titled Earth, Air, Fire, Water
features the photographic work of artist Rick
McCawley in his first gallery exhibition. His
exhibit is a vast collection of digitally composed
photographs that are categorized by element and each set
appear organic and are rich with movement. Combining
the images of nature and the urban environment mixed
with the human form he is able to craft dream-like
compositions and are noticeably influenced with color,
light, and texture to create “magical realism.” The
show will go from October 10th through the
21st and there will be an Opening
Reception for the artist on Saturday, October 14th
from 7 to 10pm.
The Gallery of the Unknown Artist is located at 116
South 20th Avenue in downtown Hollywood, FL.

Skulls Aren’t
Just for Halloween
The
latest fashion craze, although it is Halloween Time, is
SKULLS. Yes, the bony part of your head—skull.
Skulls have been popping up in such variety of areas of
fashion as tee shirts, sweaters, sneakers, candles, and
jewelry. You can get a tank top by The Great China Wall
for $506, at Dior you can purchase skull and bone
pendants and cufflinks in white gold and diamonds, at
Saks you can get a sweater by Alexander McQueen for
$510, Converse sneakers for $50 or a Juicy Couture
T-Shirt for $98. However, the piece de resistance is a
Jacob & Co. diamond watch for $50,000 through Oxygene in
Bal Harbour. This is not stuff that you buy at Hot
Topic, this is the real deal. So how much do you like
skulls? |

Project Runway
Final Four
This week, the remaining
contestants, Michael, Uli, Jeffrey, and Laura all were
given $250 to design an outfit that represents them as
designers, using all tools to their craft to create
something that is…them.
After designing their garments,
they were then instructed to go out in the city and
personally photograph their models in their garments in
some way that represents what their personal style is.
After that, the designers were instructed to give three
words that describe their line and give it life. The
winning designer’s garment and possible photograph was
going to be used in an upcoming Elle spread
featuring that garment and designer in a section called
First Look page, which opens the fashion section of the
publication. This is important to obtain because this
page presents millions of readers with the design
inspiration and give incredible exposure to the
designer.
Congratulations goes out to Uli,
the winner of the challenge, for going out of her realm
of ankle-length peasant dresses and creating a Mod/60’s
style mini dress—still in pints, but in a different
style. Her dress and her design will be on Elle’s
First Look page. Also, for the first time ever, all
contestants went to Olympus Fashion Week. This week
we will see the Reunion Show which will give us dirt,
gossip, and insider information and updates on all of
our cast.
I don’t know if you have heard, but
there is a Project Runway Party every Wednesday
in the Dana Manchester Room at
Alibi
and was part of the crowd. I advise arriving
early, grab a cocktail and be ready to hoot and holler!
Trust me when I say all types showed up, Muscle GODS,
Bears, fierce and fabulous—all were accounted for! Why
sit home alone? |

Clapton Doing
Cocaine
Don’t worry rehab survivors, your
fearless leader Eric Clapton is not relapsing—he
just feels that enough time has lapsed and can perform
one of his most memorable songs, Cocaine. The
song, originally about how glorious the drug of choice
was for him at the time later marked him like the
Scarlet Letter, and after rehab, Mr. Clapton refused to
play the song—until now! He was afraid that the message
in the song gave the wrong message to other former
addicts or people in recovery and did not want to
disgrace any treatment facility or support groups. He
now realizes that the song is indeed an anti-drug song
and might be able to approach the song from a more
positive point of view. His band mates even scream “Dirty
Cocaine” during the song. |

Evanescence Opens a Door
This week marked the end of the
hiatus for Amy Lee and her band Evanescence
and returned with The Open Door, almost after
three years from their last and phenomenally successful
Fallen. The group had to reorganize things after
their meteoric rise to fame, which nabbed them 14M
copies sold of Fallen, snagging a pair of Grammys—one
of which was Best New Artist 2003. After some
rearranging with management and band members, Lee and
the group are back in the saddle ready to give us what
we want, another album. Don’t worry, even with a lot of
changes, their sound is still the same and this
Sophomore album promises haunting piano breaks to
head-banging guitar crunch to banshee wails to
scale-sweeping vocals are all-onboard. You can
download; All That I’m Living For and I saw a
video clip and looks amazing. |

at F.I.T.
Right
now, through December 16th, at the Fashion
Institute of Technology, they are currently hosting
as show called Love and War: The Weaponized Woman,
which features both the erotic and architectural nature
of clothing design and examines the influence of
garments of love and seduction (lingerie) and of war
(armor and military uniforms) on modern and contemporary
couturiers. My favorite, which sadly cannot be found
online, is a John Galliano design for Christian Dior’s
fall collection that is charcoal black armor with gold
emblems and Roman feather helmet. |

America’s Least Wanted, Steven Kasher
Gallery
This past week launched the exhibit Least Wanted: a
Century of American Mug Shots at the Steven Kasher
Gallery, which focuses on rare and virtually unseen mug
shots of criminals of all shapes, sizes, and ages. It
all started for Mark Michaelson when he received for his
birthday a vintage Patty Hearst wanted poster and that
jump-started his interest in crime ephemera. What is
interesting about this collection is the fact that these
are snapshots of an era, sometimes a long time ago, some
with explanations, and some with just dates. These
demonstrate situations of duress and distress and
feature over 200 unique criminals such as hookers,
grifters, goons, punks, sneaks, miscreants and are both
male and female, and from adolescent to the elderly.
These photographs are part of a collection of over
10,000 American criminal mug shots ranging from the
1880’s to 1970’s that has been gathered over the past
ten years. The Steven Kasher Gallery is located at 521
West 23rd Street in New York City. You can
call them at 212*226-1485. |
