Karen Lee Myers is at Storks Wilton
Manors!
Karen
Lee Myers, local artist and photographer, is now on display at
Storks Wilton Manors in conjunction with ArtsUnited
featured artist. Now through September 30th,
come in and check out her works featuring Buddhas,
flowers, and nature. As a self-practicing Buddhist, she
enjoys crating prints with mindful moments in time of
images that are natural and some that are digitally
enhanced. I first saw a piece of hers, Silent
Thoughts, I said, When I looked at it I heard
Buddhist bells chime. If
I
owned it I would probably smile and take a second and
relax, before continuing with my hectic life. I want to
see what other pieces she has, if they are all spiritual
in nature, Eastern Philosophy based, shadowboxes,
whatever have you. I want to see more. Well, I
did. You can check out more of her work at her website
www.artnabox.com which gives examples of her work
as well as ways to purchase them. If you yourself are
an artist and have enough pieces to cover some walls,
contact Chuck at
www.artsunitedonline.com or at 954*530-2723 and tell
him I sent you. |

Catholic Chic
A
few weeks ago I reported on the latest fashion trend in
necklaces and gave specific examples as far as where to
get them, what brands are in right now and whatever have
you. I am going to expand on that, and report on the
newest trend as far as necklaces are concerned—Rosary
Beads! Yes, the symbol of Roman Catholic prayer beads
has become fashionable. Even if you are not Catholic,
they are being worn over clothes or on just a naked
torso. I first noticed it last month when I went to
Twilo in
Miami, but since then have noticed them and styles like
them cropping up all over the mainstream gay arenas. Be
careful of the Angry Nun and her unforgiving
yardstick—unless you like it like that… |
|
Fashion File/Project Runway
I was
informed of the Project Runway Party that is held
every Wednesday in the Dana Manchester Room at
Alibi
and was part of the crowd. I advise arriving
early, grab a cocktail and be ready to hoot and holler!
Trust me when I say all types showed up, Muscle GODS,
Bears, fierce and fabulous—all were accounted for! Why
sit home alone? |

Think Out of the Box at
Asoka Bali
One
of the greatest little bits of advice I have gotten from
a non-professional amazing interior designer and shop-a-holic,
would be: to be different, to relax, that things do not
have to match to go together, and even
though things do not look similar—they still match if
there is some common denominator. She would have
antique Orientals against contemporary American, three
different colors of wood—but they all matched because it
eventually ended up having a Middle Eastern flavor with
other accoutrements and minor pieces that tied
everything into to one look. I started
thinking
about that philosophy and what changes in my décor that
I could make to give it a different flavor and came up
with my favorite—Asian. Right here in Wilton Manors and
across the street from the almost finished Wilton
Station is
Asoka Bali and has everything that I could
possibly want to give my areas the Zen feeling I
desperately need. They have a completely new shipment
of personally handpicked items that just arrived and
have anything and everything you could want at a
reasonably affordable price to give you the feeling you
could want. |

Between the Pages |
I
have found another perfect book for anyone that:
needs a laugh, a pick-me-up, something to think about,
and some good old-fashioned common sense and it is
called Beauty Parlor Wisdom and contains
such nuggets as: On making judgments: The color of
someone’s skin doesn’t tell you nearly as much about
them as the color of their nail polish. How about
this one: On Militarization: When they cut Elvis’
hair, it changed the world. On Comb-Overs: You don’t
put them down to make them change. You say bald is
sexy. These and over a hundred more are available
at To the Moon Marketplace right here in the
heart of Wilton Manors. Anthony only has a few left so
get in now and tell him I sent you. |

Carnival Center News |
As
a member of the Press, I was invited to a Press Day
at the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts in
Miami and I would just love to share with you some of
the pictures I took from my journey. It is truly worth
the over budget money that was spent and I literally
cannot wait to see my first show there. There are three
theatres and each one is amazing in that each and every
item and concern was taken care of so that you get the
performance you came to see and an experience of a
lifetime. If you would like more information about the
Carnival Center or events, you can go to

Love
and War
at F.I.T.
Right
now, through December 16th, at the Fashion
Institute of Technology, they are currently hosting
as show called Love and War: The Weaponized Woman,
which features both the erotic and architectural nature
of clothing design and examines the influence of
garments of love and seduction (lingerie) and of war
(armor and military uniforms) on modern and contemporary
couturiers. My favorite, which sadly cannot be found
online, is a John Galliano design for Christian Dior’s
fall collection that is charcoal black armor with gold
emblems and Roman feather helmet. |

America’s Least Wanted, Steven Kasher
Gallery
This past week launched the exhibit Least Wanted: a
Century of American Mug Shots at the Steven Kasher
Gallery, which focuses on rare and virtually unseen mug
shots of criminals of all shapes, sizes, and ages. It
all started for Mark Michaelson when he received for his
birthday a vintage Patty Hearst wanted poster and that
jump-started his interest in crime ephemera. What is
interesting about this collection is the fact that these
are snapshots of an era, sometimes a long time ago, some
with explanations, and some with just dates. These
demonstrate situations of duress and distress and
feature over 200 unique criminals such as hookers,
grifters, goons, punks, sneaks, miscreants and are both
male and female, and from adolescent to the elderly.
These photographs are part of a collection of over
10,000 American criminal mug shots ranging from the
1880’s to 1970’s that has been gathered over the past
ten years. The Steven Kasher Gallery is located at 521
West 23rd Street in New York City. You can
call them at 212*226-1485. |

Napoleon on the Nile
Even
though Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt was a military
disaster, there were a squadron of scholars and
scientists that went and ended up forming the foundation
of Egyptology and Egytomania, later gave Orientalism a
boost, and is commemorated by the 1,000 engravings of
the 23-volume book called Description de l’Egypte.
When Napoleon went to Egypt, he brought along 167
physicians,
engineers,
economists, mathematicians, zoologists, botanists,
archeologists, translators, journalists, and artists to
accompany the army. Their task was to catalogue all of
Egypt’s wonders which resulted in a body of work that
took roughly 20 years and 2,000 skilled draftsmen and
typographers to complete and became a renown image bank
consulted by artists seeking authenticity in their own
pictures. The collection, entitled Napoleon on
the
Nile: Soldiers, Artists, and The Rediscovery of Egypt
includes Orientalist paintings and a cache of
fascinating ephemera and is on display at the Dahesh
Museum of Art that is at
580 Madison Avenue
at 56th Street. You can call them at
212*759-0606 or visit them on the web at
www.daheshmuseum.org. This exhibit will be on
display until December 31st. |
